Hazard: Earthquake

General Concept: Two parallel timelines running with the perspective of two different people. The first
timeline is one where an earthquake will happen and the main character, a UP student, does not end up
preparing for the earthquake because, “It couldn’t possibly happen in my 5 years in UP” he thought, and
he ends up being trapped in a building with no food or water and ends with him dying inside. The
second timeline is of another UP student, who is overly paranoid about disaster preparedness, who does
prepare for an earthquake, but in this timeline, the earthquake does not happen during his entire time
in UP, and ends up having wasted some time and effort in preparation. One major idea to be highlighted
here is the overall minimal effect in time spent for preparation for disaster, that it isn’t something that
will take many hours of many days to do, and can be done in conjunction with other activities.

Message: The main idea of this concept is the comparison between two possibilities, and the “worst-
case scenarios of each.” This comparison is meant to show how much worse it could be if one does not
prepare for disaster rather than possibly wasting, in the whole scheme of things, a little bit of time
preparing, and mitigating one’s risk. There is a tendency for people to become apathetic towards
something that would happen far in the future or even possibly won’t happen due to a minor
inconvenience on their part.

Frame 1: Show the rooms of these two students in detail, showing items related to their friends,
hobbies, studies, and disaster preparedness. The students are also in the room – one studying, and one
checking his disaster rations and equipment. The latter can be over exaggerated for added effect (i.e a
lot survival kit and rations which he overly prepared; updates of recent earthquake events)

Frame 2: Disaster/Non-disaster through the eyes of the two students. The unprepared one
scrambles in a panic, trying to get all their things and not knowing the proper things to do during the
disaster. One of the following can be used, in their panic, he/she ends up tripping and injuring
him/herself and cannot move in the midst of disaster, or they become trapped in their room, without
any food or water and starve to death. Other possibilities may be added. The prepared one’s side shows
time passing by without any disaster occurring, with their stock of rations being refreshed over time.
He/she is shown to still continuously be paranoid of any sudden earthquake disasters that may probably
occur at any time.

Frame 3: The unprepared one’s body is retrieved from the ruins of their dorm, and their possible
cause of death is identified and commented on by nearby people. The prepared one graduates and
continues on with their life.
