Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was
founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College
by the Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan. From its
humble beginning, the institution has grown
exponentially to that of having more than 33,000
students at present. Students from all over India
and more than 50 countries are studying at VIT.
University status was conferred in 2001 by
MHRD Govt. of India in recognition of its
excellence in academics, research and
extracurricular initiatives. Currently, VIT has 4
campuses – in Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati (AP)
and Bhopal (MP). The National Institutional
Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the MHRD,
Government of India, has identified VIT as the
best Private Engineering Institution in India in the
year 2016 and 2017. VIT has gone for
accreditation by NAAC [India], IET [UK], and
ABET [USA] and follows world class academic
processes. VIT is the first and only University in
India to get 4 star rating from QS, the world
universities ranking organization. The Industry
consortium FICCI, has declared VIT as the
“University of the Year 2016”, in India. VIT has
also been ranked in the top 201-250 in QS BRICS
Ranking.
SCHOOL OF CIVIL AND
CHEMICALENGINEERING
The School of Civil and Chemical Engineering
(SCALE) is a part of VIT since its inception. The
School has grown tremendously over years and
is now recognized as one of the major
engineering schools in VIT. The School has
more than 60 faculty members from various
reputed institutes such as IITs, IISc etc. Besides
high quality teaching at both UG and PG levels,
the faculty members of the school are actively
consultancy projects including DST, ISRO,
AR&DB and also from many reputed industries.
The School with its multifaceted faculty
continues to maintain and cultivate its strong
links with the infrastructural industry.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP One day Workshop on
Assessment of
Water is one of the most important renewable
natural resources for supporting life. One-third of
Surface Water and
the developing world faces severe water
shortages even though large amounts of water
will continuously flood annually out to sea from
water-scarce regions. The problem is that the
Groundwater
sporadic, spatial and temporal distribution of
precipitation rarely coincides with demand..
Hence, it is essential to assess the quantity and
quality of surface water. Generation of
spatiotemporal variability of regional water
resource on long-term require sophisticated
modeling tools, such as GIS and DEM (Digital
Elevation Model). Rainfall being the predominant
form precipitation causing stream flow especially
flood flow in a rivers. The magnitude of
precipitation also varies temporally and spatially.
Due to unequal distribution of surface water and
rainfall worldwide, 2.5 billion people depend
solely on groundwater resources to satisfy their
basic necessity. Groundwater is a hidden
resource. Therefore studies of groundwater under
both natural and artificial boundary conditions

employ modeling techniques. This workshop
