National foreword
This British Standard is the UK implementation of
EN ISO 7010:2012+A5:2015. It is identical to ISO 7010:2011 incorporating
amendments 1:2012, 2:2012, 3:2012, 4:2013 and 5:2014. It supersedes
BS EN ISO 7010:2012, which is withdrawn.
The start and finish of text introduced or altered by amendment is
indicated in the text by tags. Tags indicating changes to ISO text carry
the number of the ISO amendment. For example, text altered by
ISO amendment 1 is indicated by .
National Annex NA has been added by PH/8/1, to provide registered
safety signs which were originally in BS 5499-5, but have not
subsequently been included in ISO 7010, or those which have not been
included in either. This National Annex will be revised regularly to
include safety signs as they are standardized by ISO and BSI. All safety
signs within the National Annex conform to the design principles given
in BS ISO 3864-1 and the design criteria given in BS ISO 3864-3, as well as
using the ISO 7010 template available at http://www.iso.org/tc145/sc2.
The colorimetric and photometric properties of safety sign materials are
given in BS ISO 3864-4.
The original suite of standards on safety signs in BS 5499 included
BS 5499-1, BS 5499-5, BS 5499-6 and BS 5499-11. They were all
cross‑linked all have been withdrawn as follows.
—— BS ISO 3864-1 supersedes BS 5499-1.
—— BS ISO 3864-4 is new and covers material replacing that in the
previous edition of ISO 3864-1. BS 5378-2 has been withdrawn.
—— BS ISO 3864-3 supersedes BS 5499-6.
—— BS ISO 7010 supersedes BS 5499-5. Please note that
BS EN ISO 7010:2012+A3:2014 with National Annex NA supersedes
BS ISO 7010:2012.
—— BS ISO 20712-1 with National Annex supersedes BS 5499-11.
Guidance on the application of safety signs is given in BS 5499-4 and
BS 5499-10.
The use of safety signs does not replace the need for proper working
methods and for instruction and training in accident prevention and the
actions to be taken in the event of an emergency.
The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical
Committee PH/8, Graphical symbols, to Subcommittee PH/8/1, Graphical
symbols - Safety signs.
A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained
on request to its secretary.

This International Standard will be maintained electronically through the use of a database. The indexes of
this database will be used in these summaries as search engines with each registered safety sign having a

Table 2 summarizes the registered safety signs in terms of safety sign category in accordance with
ISO 3864-1.
In cases where the orientation of the graphical symbol is not essential to the meaning of the safety sign, the
graphical symbol may be reproduced in a mirrored form. For prohibition signs, it is essential that the
prohibition bar does not obscure significant details of the graphical symbol.
NOTE The graphical symbol is the complete image containing all the graphical symbol elements as shown in the
registered safety sign.
Where a registered safety sign is not available to indicate a particular desired meaning, the meaning shall be
obtained either by developing a new safety sign following the design principles of ISO 3864-1 and ISO 3864-3
or by using the appropriate general sign (ISO 7010-M001, -P001, -W001), together with supplementary safety
information.
