51-49-00 - Description - STANDARD TORQUE VALUES

CAUTION: REFER TO THE RELEVANT TABLES IN CHAPTER 51-40-00 TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT DATA TO BE USED IN THIS
CHAPTER.
1. General
A. When it is necessary to disassemble/assemble a threaded fastener it is important that the fastener is tightened to the correct
torque value. Under or over tightening can cause the fastener to fail.
B. The torque values given in the tables that follow are also applicable to the first and second oversize (where available) of the
original standard.
C. The torque values given in the tables that follow are only applicable when the nut is turned onto the bolt/screw. If it is necessary
to tighten the bolt/screw into a nut (for example, not enough clearance for the wrench movement), the specified value must be
increased by 20 %. Only bolts/screws that have a clearance fit can be installed in this way, or when the nut is an anchor nut.
D. Only standard torque wrenches or torque screwdrivers are used to apply torque values. These wrenches/screwdrivers must be
calibrated and tested before they are used, or when they are adjusted to a new value (if they are the adjustable type).
Wrenches/Screwdrivers that have been calibrated and tested must be approved by the Inspection Department before use.
E. Tables 11 thru 29 that follow only give torque values related to different bolt diameters. When it is necessary to install a fastener
that requires a torque value, the applicable Table will be given in Chapter 51-40-00, or called up in the repair procedure or
relevant AIRBUS engineering document.

NOTE: The information of Tables 3 thru 9 has been deleted.

2. Safety Precautions

WARNING: YOU MUST NOT APPLY TORQUE VALUES DIFFERENT TO THOSE GIVEN IN THIS CHAPTER, UNLESS SPECIFIED
OTHERWISE IN A REPAIR PROCEDURE OR OTHER AIRBUS APPROVED DOCUMENT.

WARNING: ONLY CALIBRATED TORQUE WRENCHES/SCREWDRIVERS MUST BE USED TO APPLY THE TORQUE VALUES GIVEN IN
THIS CHAPTER.

WARNING: YOU MUST OBSERVE THE LUBRICATION STATE OF THE NUT/BOLT GIVEN IN THE TABLES WHEN YOU APPLY THE
SPECIFIED TORQUE VALUES.
3. Use of Castellated Nuts
A. You may have difficulty when you try to line up the slots of a castellated nut with the cotter pin hole in a bolt. If these cannot be
lined up within the given torque value tolerances use one of the alternatives that follow:

1/14
11/21/2018 A319 - SRM - 01-Nov-2018 - 51-49-00 - Description - STANDARD TORQUE VALUES

(1) Decrease the minimum torque value by 10%.

NOTE: This alternative is not permitted if the new torque value is less than 0.1 to 0.2 m.daN (8.84 to 17.69 lbf.in.)
(2) Try a new nut.
(3) Install a washer (NSA 5325 steel and teflon) under the nut. But refer to Chapter 51-42-11 before you use this method.
(4) Use a bolt that has not been pre-drilled. Tighten the nut to the correct torque value and then drill the cotter pin hole through
the bolt.

NOTE: When you use this alternative procedure make sure that the strength of the bolt is not reduced. The drilled hole
must be deburred and protected against corrosion. It is recommended that when possible only pre-drilled bolts are
used.
4. Re-Use of Nuts and Bolts
A. It is recommended that nuts and bolts that were installed to a specific torque value are not re-used. However, when it is
necessary to re-use such nuts and bolts apply the rules that follow:
(1) Do not re-use aluminum alloy nuts.
(2) Nuts and bolts made from other materials can be re-used if your Inspection Department approves and if:
- the surface protection of the nut/bolt is not damaged,
- the original lubrication can be renewed,
- the applicable torque can be achieved.
5. Lubricants and Correction Coefficients

CAUTION: CORRECTION COEFFICIENTS ARE NOT APPLICABLE TO SELF−LOCKING NUTS.

A. Torque values are normally given for nuts/bolts in their "as supplied" state of lubrication. If it is necessary to apply additional
lubrication to the nut or bolt threads the specified torque must be corrected. Table 10 details the applicable correction coefficients.
6. Use of an Adaptor
A. When it is necessary to use an extension adaptor with torque wrench (Refer to Figure 001), the specified torque value must be
corrected.
B. When an adaptor is used, the axis of the adaptor and torque wrench should be in line, or not more than 15° offset.
C. The adaptor must be shorter than the wrench, this will reduce the risk of error.
D. To correct the torque value, use the Rule of Torque formula that follows:
(T1 x A) / (A + B) = T2
- T1 = specified torque value
- T2 = corrected torque value
- A = length of torque wrench
- B = length of adaptor
- Example :

T1 x A = 2 daNm x 300 mm = 600 = 1.5 daNm
