 Electronic Media.

Print media, uses paper or canvas as a medium of communication. Print media is the most

Although it is a predominant mode of communication but still it is commonly used

medium of communication in the remote areas.

On the other hand, Electronic Media, the way of communication which uses electronic or

profitable business in its every form i.e. radio and television. Another medium of

electronic communication is information technology, which is emerging as the most

successful, feasible, profitable and widely used electronic medium. Although, this

medium is not very commonly used in Pakistan but sooner it will be the most widely used

communication medium.

Few years back a niche market is now declared as a big industry, in Pakistan. Initially

there was only one television channel and few newspapers were working in the country.

This trend remained constant for many years. But, from almost 10 years, this market

expanded like anything. Now almost 100 of television channels as well as newspapers are

present in the market. There are few media groups which are dominating the industry due

SOCIAL ASPECTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY

Social factors relate to pattern of behavior, tastes, and lifestyles. A major component of

this is a change in consumer behavior resulting from changes in fashions and styles. The

age structure of the population also alters over time (currently we have an ageing

population). An understanding of social change gives business a better feel for the future

market situation.

JUNG GROUP

Jung Group is targeting people of different groups from children to old, from the people

with different interests such as news, entertainment, sports and music. It is also targeting

both the genders. Especially women are being targeted with the magazines like MAG and

Akhbart-e-Jahan. Hence, there is a long list of market segments which are being targeted

by Jung group with its diverse products.

With the increase in education and technology, people are now more interested in

utilizing media as a mode of communication and information, due to which market has

expanded. This expansion in market increased demand of the products but also raised the

competition level very high.

As Jung group is a famous media group and provides both print and electronic medium of

communication, more people have access to it. So people have a very positive attitude

towards the products of this group.

The other most important factor is that this media group is providing most of information

in Urdu, which can bring more awareness, civil sense and social change, as it is the

national language and is understood by many people.

- 11 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

KHABRAIN GROUP

Khabrain group is targeting many segments of the market, based on their sociology. Its

products and services i.e. newspapers and television channel is for almost all the social

classes. Its newspapers are available in four languages, so that more and more people can

understand it. It is also publishing an evening newspaper to target the customers who buy

newspaper in the evening i.e. at the way from their offices or for those who want fresh

news all the time. The target of this group is different ages from 18 to 40. This group has

an edge over others i.e. its newspapers are available in regional languages due to which,

people with weak educational backgrounds can understand it.

Khabran group is not the most famous media group in the country. Even groups high

officials did not deny this fact. It was confessed in an advertisement by calling itself as:

“The second largest media group in the country”

another edge that this group is enjoying that its products/services are compatible and

relative to the general attitudes, lifestyle of the people and the social taboos i.e. providing

media in native languages and publishing information and pictures which are compatible

to social taboos.

ARY TELEVISION NETWORK

ARY television network is among the leading television networks, which is targeting

people of different age groups and different tastes. It has segmented the market based on

the taste on the consumers i.e. infotainment, music, news and current affairs, religious

content, fashion and cartoon etc. as media is getting popular among the people, the

market size is continuously expanding. Although, all the market segments have expanded,

the demand for the news and current affairs channel was increased like fire. Generally,

- 12 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

people have a very positive approach towards the ARY television network. ARY

television network is also the largest television network in the country. ARY conducted

surveys regarding their popularity. According to which ARY is the largest and most

famous television network.

EXPRESS GROUP

Express group is having a newspaper and a news channel which shows that this group

is targeting the people who want fresh news. And it is very clear from their slogan.

“ Har Khabar par Nazar”

But express group publish articles and broad cast programs other than news and

current affairs to get attention of the people who like infotainment and sports.

Market for communication and information has grown to an extent that every second

businessman want to invest in this industry. The reason behind this expansion is

advancement of technology which have raised the exposure of people to different

communication mediums.

At current situation people from all over the world have positive attitude towards

express group due to its instant reporting events.

Express group never conducted any survey regarding its popularity. But, according to

third party survey it is among the leading media groups and 24% of the total

circulation.

DAWN GROUP

DAWN group is targeting all the age groups and people with different interests. Their

main target is highly educated class which can understand English. With the increase

- 13 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

in education and its quality, the number of people which can understand and have

interest in English is increased due to which not only the demand by the size of the

market has also expanded. According to surveys dawn is the best and widely

distributed English newspaper of the country. DAWN has a very respectable position

in the mind as it was launched by the founder of Pakistan Quaid e Azam. So people

have an emotional attachment to it. Although, it is the oldest and the most famous

English newspaper. It is not very popular among the people because only few percent

of people can understand English

- 14 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

LEGAL ASPECTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY

Laws are continually being updated in a wide range of areas, e.g. consumer protection

legislation, environmental legislation, health & safety and employment law, etc.

Businesses need to take a pro-active approach and be ahead of these changes, rather than

hurriedly making alterations to products and processes in a reactive way.

JUNG GROUP

Jung group is licensed to print newspapers and broadcast television channels i.e.

Geo television, Geo news, Aag tv, Geo super, Geo USA, Geo English.

The operating restrictions are regularized by an autonomous body called PEMRA

(Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority). Although PEMRA is an

autonomous body but it’s heavily influenced by the government. Tax polices,

trade and tax controls by the government affects the business as almost all the

equipment and the raw material is imported from abroad.

KHABRAIN GROUP

Like all other businesses, media business also has to meet the legal responsibilities such

as licensing and running legalities. The organization has to follow these rules and

regulations for the consistent running of business.

To start a newspaper or television channel khabrain group had to get license from the

government bodies. To start a newspaper, license acquiring process is not a very lengthy

process. But, to get a license to start a television channel is tough and lengthy process

which needs a heavy investment.

- 15 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

A regulatory body to check the performance of news papers is ABC (certified private

media), which rate the news papers. Only those newspapers are eligible to get the

advertisements from the government which is present in list published by ABC.

Newspapers and television channels also have to face political restrictions such as

PEMRA ordinance. Tax and tariff policies by the government also influence the business

as all the raw material in imported from overseas.

ARY TELEVISION NETWORK

As ARY television network is a Dubai based network, it had to get license form the

government of Dubai. But to broadcast its transmission from Pakistan, it had to get a

permit from the government of Pakistan as well.

While broadcasting its transmission from Pakistan, it has to follow constitutional and

legal restrictions implemented by the government of Pakistan.. it also has to obey a

private media regulatory body i.e. PEMRA. PEMRA is a body to check the private

electronic media.

It is also a partner of certain international television channels, for their broadcast from

Pakistan, such as HBO and Fashion TV etc. So, it also has to meet the agreements

legalities with these international channels.

DAWN GROUP

As DAWN news was started in the British India. At that time there were no hard and fast

legal restrictions to start the newspaper. Actually this newspaper was not started for the

business purposes, but to represent all India Muslim league. It was started as a reaction to

- 16 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

the propagandas by the Hindu newspapers. After the birth of Pakistan its head office was

held in Karachi. But now, it is also published in Lahore and Islamabad.

DAWN news has acquired a license from the government of Pakistan for its

television channel.

It has to obey the rules and regulations by the authorities like ABC and PEMRA.

Tax tariff controls by the government influence this business in the same way as on all

other businesses.

EXPRESS GROUP

It is mandatory for private organization to have a licensing to run the business and they

have no restrictions on the sale the product .Tax and tariff policies effect the

organization, with increase in the tax revenue decreases and it is compulsory for every

private organization to pay the tax.

- 17 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

ECONOMIC ASPECTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY

Economic changes are closely related to social ones. The economy goes through a series

of fluctuations associated with general booms and slumps in economic activity. In a boom

nearly all businesses benefit and in a slump most lose out. Other economic changes that

affect business include changes in the interest rate, wage rates, and the rate of inflation

(i.e. general level of increase in prices). Businesses will be more encouraged to expand

and take risks when economic conditions are right, e.g. low interest rates and rising

demand.

JUNG GROUP

Economic conditions of country have highly influenced Jung media group. As all the raw

material is imported from abroad, increase in foreign exchange rate, have increased the

production cost. At the other hand, reduction in buying power of the consumers has

reduced the sales.

Due to high inflation rate, tax is increased by the government to overcome inflation. This

increase in tax again influences it.

The other most important factor is that due to the state of depression in market, many

companies can not afford advertising. Advertising is the real revenue generating agents in

media.

According to the marketing executive of Jung group this is not the right time to entre the

market.

KHABRAIN GROUP

- 18 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

All the economic factors such as inflation and foreign exchange rate etc influence this

business in the same way as in other businesses.

Foreign exchange rate is influencing the business as all the raw material from machinery

to paper and ink is being imported from abroad. So, all the payments and transactions are

done in dollars. So, the rate at which dollar is being sold in local currency matters a lot.

In the present time, the production cost is at its maximum level. In the period of last one

year, the price of the paper is raised from 34Rs/kg to 92s/kg. This shows that inflation

affects this business a lot.

According to an official from the khabrain group, it is the worst tie to enter the market.

ARY TELEVISION NETWORK

Starting an electronic media business needs a heavy investment. As ARY television

network is backed by ARY Group, it was easy for them to make a heavy investment and

consistent expansion of business by starting more and more channels. The television

network was able to meet challenges, and ups and downs because of ARY Group.

But at the present time ARY television network is facing crisis. This is because many

companies can not afford advertisements, reducing the revenue of ARY television

network.

DAWN GROUP

All the material bring used in the production of newspapers and the machinery in printing

newspaper is being imported form other countries. So the economic conditions of the

country and foreign exchange rate influence the business a lot. Most of the

- 19 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

advertisements are from government sector. Due to the economic crisis, government has

stopped giving advertisements.

On the other hand, television channel has to pay the countries which have their

own satellites. As Pakistan does not own any satellite so television channels have to use

others satellite for this, again they have to do transactions in dollar.

According to the marketing manager, it is the worst time to the market.

EXPRESS GROUP

As we all know that the current economic conditions of the country are not good. It

affects the input as well as output of the organization. Economic growth of the

country increased the target customer which increased the sales of the company and

it is done through advertisements. The right time to enter in the market when the

country is economically growing or country has stable conditions.

- 20 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

POLITICAL ASPECTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY

Political changes relate to changes in government influence. In recent years these changes

have been particularly significant because as citizens we have to adopt directives and

regulations created by the government which then become part of constitution. Political

changes are closely tied up with legal changes.

JUNG GROUP

Jung media group is highly influenced by the political factors. And, somehow, it is been

the biggest victim of the political forces. Although dictatorship period is considered as a

tough period for media and democracy as a lenient period. But in this case, both types of

government affect the media. It depends upon the ruling party and its interests. Whether it

is democratic government of PML (N), PPPP or the dictator’s government of Gen.

Pervaiz Musharaf, who initially gave encouragement to the industry.

On the other hand level of democracy and leakages influence industry. One of the

officials also referred the latest story illegal act of granting B grade instead of C grade in

HSSC examination, to the daughter of a higher official. Freedom of expression plays a

very important role, particularly in this industry, as this industry is based on the freedom

of expression.

Expected political changes do not have any impact on this business as it is more

dependent on the civil society.

KHABRAIN GROUP

- 21 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

Political state of the country affects this business at a very high level. According to the

General Manager of the Khabrain group, the period of dictatorship was more lenient for

the media, in spite of the fact that democracy is considered as more favorable for media,

in rest of the world.

According to the General Manager of the Khabrain group, media in Pakistan is still

facing 30% political interventions, in this globalize world. He mentioned many cases in

which, due to political intervention, journalists faced many difficulties.

He also said that the political instability in stability do not have much effect on media.

But it may be good for them as it makes the media active

ARY TELEVISION NETWORK

ARY television network had been a victim of many political interventions. Its

transmission was stopped in the country, many times, due to political interventions. The

network faced tough financial crisis due to this. Even then period of dictatorship was

more lenient for the group. A dictator who encouraged media for free reporting banned

the channels on 3rd November 2007. Leakages and bureaucracy is another factor

influencing media and truthful reporting. It is common for the television network to have

pressures from the high government officials. This group has an edge over others that it is

backed by ARY group, which is investing in the country other than media. Freedom of

expression plays an important role in media, so as it is essential for ARY television

network as well.

DAWWN GROUP

- 22 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

In the political Govt they are two types in which one reign they considered more freedom

in dictatorship as compared in democracy and in dictatorship the reign of Msharaf starts

and in democracy the reign of Zardari starts and that influence the media group more.

EXPRESS GROUP

They are two types of Govt:

A) Dictatorship, which includes the General Pervaiz Musharaf’s reign

and in that reign media felt more freedom as compared to other party or the reign of

other Govt. Media provided more accurate information in the reign of dictatorship

and people liked the media more.

B) Democracy which included the PML (N) and PPPP and they were

ruling parties, it difficult for the media to express the truth .

At some position it hurts the organization but it is not important for the

organization. Freedom encourages providing more accurate information about

incidents taking place in the country.

- 23 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS WHICH INFLUENCE THE INDUSTRY

Changes in technology have also become particularly significant in the post-millennium

world. This is particularly true in terms of modern communication technologies. The

creation of databases and electronic communications have enabled vast quantities of

information to be shared and quickly distributed in a modern company enabling vast cost

reductions, and often improvements in service. Organizations need to be aware of the

latest relevant technologies for their business and to surf the wave of change.

JUNG GROUP

Like most of the other business, emerging technologies have influence this business by

the means of technology, this business had become more profitable. Technology has

fastened the production and improved the quality of medium.

Especially, information technology has a very positive impact on this business. As the

main function of this industry is communication, information technology has reduced

costs of transferring news from one place to another. These days, information technology

is a mode of electronic communication such as e-paper and live streaming etc.

KHABRAIN GROUP

With the emerging technology media is expanded like a rapid fire. It has fastened the

activity of work. In the earlier days, when the group did not have latest technologies, it

had to publish much old news. But with the use of technology, it is publishing and

broadcasting the latest news. Technology not only improved the quality but also the cost

- 24 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

of production. The group also organized training sessions for the workers to use the latest

technology.

With the use of internet, the communication is more rapid. Another most important favor

which internet is providing is production of e-paper.

ARY TELEVISION NETWORK

Technology has improved the business to a large extent. With the use of technology,

news from all over the world can be broadcasted from Dubai, in an instant.

Particularly in this case, from Pakistan. Other then that ARY television network has

deals with various production companies in Pakistan, through internet end telephones.

ARY Television network organized many training programs for its employees and the

trainees.

DAWN GROUP

Technology has the most important of factor which influence the company and that is

done through the internet and relating to that which provide the information about the

current affairs of the country. Through technology it is easy to access the information

and also to access more quickly and accurate

EXPRESS GROUP

In the older ages people were not familiar with the technology and hardly

technology was introduced in the organizations. With the increase in the

technology it is easier for the group to excess more information accurate

and quickly that also increased the profit of the organization through

internet and various things which is relating to that.

CONCLUSIONS

After studying social, legal, economic, political and technological aspects influencing the

media industry and its five major players, we can conclude our research in the following

points:

1. Media is no more only a social work, but it is a business. With the advancement in

education and exposure of the people, the demand of the media has expanded like

a rapid fire. In Pakistan, media went through an up swing during last ten years.

2. It is not necessary that the democracy brings fruitful results for media as well.

Media, in Pakistan, received a lot of encouragement from a dictator in last eight

years.

3. Print medium, can get advertisements only if its name is mentioned in the list

published by Certified Private Media also known as ABC. Advertisements are the

real revenue generating entities in media. So a newspaper must maintain a

respectable position in that list.

4. Electronic media is being regulated by an autonomous body PEMRA. This body

retains checks and balance on private electronic media.

5. Media had been a victim of political interventions from a long time. Media is not

yet totally free in Pakistan. It may take years to make the media totally free.

6. With the use of latest technology, media is working very efficiently these days.

Technology has fastened media for instant communication. Technology not only

improved the quality but also reduced the costs.

- 26 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

7. Media have played a very positive role towards nation building. But on the other

hand it also affected the youth. So media can build a nation as well as ruin a

nation in many ways. So it depends on the mission of the organization that what it

chooses

- 27 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE INDUSTRY

Keeping in the study and its conclusions, we recommend the industry the following

points:

1. The leading media groups of the country are using print medium and

television channels to target the customers. Radio is also an important medium

of communication, which is only targeted by only one group among these

major five players. Media groups should also start radio transmission by better

segmentation. This market segment had been neglected for long. So, it is the

best way to target a new segment to expand the business.

2. Among the five major players there are few which are broadcasting the

channels other than news and current affairs. It is fair chance for them to enter

the entertainment market as well, especially in sports.

3. it is common in newspapers that the experienced active journalists get the

managerial posts. Managerial posts should be given to the management

professionals, because the can improve the value chain of the medium more

efficiently.

4. All the media groups should become a part of CSR (Corporate Social

Responsibility). A socially responsible media can give rise to a sophisticated

nation.

- 28 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

MARKET POSITIONING

With the help our findings in the research, we can rate these major players based on their

social, legal, political and technological aspects. So, according to us these five major

players can be rated as:

1. JUNG Group

2. ARY television network

3. DAWN Group

4. Khabrain Group

5. Express Group

This positioning is being done, based on many things which can be market share,

volume, number of segments targeted and popularity of the media group.

1. Jung Group stood at the top of the list because of many reasons:

 It is the largest media group in the industry by volume.

 It is using all possible mediums for communication i.e. print

medium, electronic medium (television, radio, information

technology).

 It is targeting a wide range of market segments, depending on taste

and demographics of the consumers.

 It is the most popular media group in the country, according to

many surveys.

2. ARY television network has been given the second place because:

- 29 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

 It is the largest television network in the country.

 It is been in the market for a long time. It is the first private electronic media

channel in the country.

 It is subsidiary of a renowned business group ARY Group.

 It is also representative of many international television channels in Pakistan.

 It is targeting a large number and diverse market segments based on the taste

and age of the consumers.

3. DAWN Group held third place in this rating because:

 It is the oldest newspaper of the country.

 It is the most widely distribute English newspaper of the country.

 The class which is influencing the economy i.e. business class read DAWN

news.

 DAWN news is only available in English, which most of the people does not

understand. In Pakistan.

 Its target market is only interested in news and current affairs.

4. Khabrain group is at fourth number due to many reasons, which can be:

 It is the second largest group on newspapers in the country.

 It is targeting customers based on demographics and tastes.

 It is cheaper than many other newspapers, so people with less buying power can

buy it.

 Its main target is only the market segment which is interested in news and current

affairs.

- 30 -
Principles of Marketing- Project Report

 It is not very common among the people. And its television channel is not popular

among the public.

5. EXPRESS is at the bottom of this list. Although it is among the leading media

groups of the country but it is at 5th position among these five media groups:

 It is subsidiary of LAKSON Company, Pakistan.

 Its products and services are available in Urdu.

 It is popular media group.

 Its volume is very as compared to others.

 It is only targeting one market segment.

So, these were the reasons behind the rating of the popular media groups.
