TECHNOLOGIES THAT

KICKSTARTED THE
MOBILE REVOLUTION
All tech revolutions are built
on the shoulders of great technologies
that came before...
2 What kickstarted the mobile revolution?

1 PDAs
The term “PDA” (Personal
Digital Assistant) was coined by
John Sculley, of Apple corp. It is
a term which is used for a device
that functions as a personal infor-
mation manager.
The first PDA was introduced
by Apple in 1993, with the Apple Newton MessagePad.
A PDA was a term used for any device which had a touch screen,
and had a planner, and could access the internet. They were largely
outdated, after the smartphone boom around 2010. PDAs were one
of the main things smartphones drew inspiration from.

2 QWERTY keypads
QWERTY keypads are largely
known for the ease of typing they
provide a user with. The first
QWERTY device was the Nokia
Communicator 9000, which
came out in 1996.
All smartphones use QWERTY
keypads, today – software or hardware.

3 Internet connectivity
(cellular data and Wi-Fi)
Wireless internet connectivity
is probably one of the biggest
milestones in mobile phone
technology. When cellular data
was introduced in mobile phones,
it ushered in a whole new era of
communication technology, which
would revolutionise mobile phone technology, in the years to come.
This one little advancement paved the way for many new tech-
nologies, such as 4G for mobile phones.

4 Instant messaging
Instant Messaging is prob-
ably one of the most popular
ways of communication. Almost
every phone has IM applications
which are used by people all over
the world. With the advance-
ments in Internet technology,
IM has rapidly grown.
4 What kickstarted the mobile revolution?

5 Pagers
Pagers paved the way for
instant messaging. They’ve made
it easier for people to share text
messages, wirelessly, without
having to tie a note to a pigeon’s
leg. Pagers are now only used in
hospitals, and are only seen with doctors, or tech collectors, but in
the 80s (or early 90s in India), it was the gadget to have.

6 Touch screens
Touch screens have changed
mobile phones forever. Not only
have they given us more func-
tionality, more real-estate to
view videos, but also done away
with external input devices such
as the stylus.

7 Smartphones
Smartphones are the most
recent, and the biggest develop-
ment in the mobile industry, till
What kickstarted the mobile revolution? 5

date. They have increased the utility of mobile phones manifold.

They’ve also helped create new avenues for innovation.

8 Apps
Applications in mobile
phones have been around since
the inception of the first phone.
Starting from a simple calcu-
lator application, going up to the
games we play, like Temple Run
or Subway Surfers. Really shows
you how far we’ve come.

9 Li-On batteries
In the 90s, phones used to
use nickel cadmium batteries,
which weren’t exactly the most
efficient. They were also very
bulky and heavy, making the
devices bulky and heavy. Plus,
they didn’t hold charge, very well.
Li-On batteries are much
smaller, and are much more efficient. These batteries have no
6 What kickstarted the mobile revolution?

issue holding charge, and are more powerful and longer lasting than
Ni-Cd batteries.

10 Cameras
Cameras in mobile
phones kickstarted a whole new
range of camera phones, the
quality of which improve with
every successive generation
of phones.
Today, it’s almost impossible
to think of a phone without a camera.

11 Microchip processors
Over the years, the com-
puting power of mobile phone
CPUs have been increasing expo-
nentially. Decreasing sizes and
increasing performance means
that phones today fit in a pocket,
but have more processing power
than the lunar modules that
landed men on the moon! That’s not all, flagship phones have as
What kickstarted the mobile revolution? 7

much number crunching ability as most entry-level desktops, giving

them the capability to play video and games in high resolutions.

12 NFC
Having NFC sensors in
phones have made them more
secure, and easier to use, than
ever. NFC sensors can be used
to unlock your phone, and make
secure payments, using applica-
tions like Android pay, or PayPal.
NFC may not have driven the adoption of mobile phones thus far,
but we see it contributing a lot going forward.

13 GPS, Accelerometer, Barometer, etc.

Today, almost every phone comes equipped with at least
one of these. They’ve become
an indispensable part of mobile
phone technology.
These features essentially
turn your phone into an all-in-one
device which makes our lives so
much easier.
8 What kickstarted the mobile revolution?

14 Storage
Earlier, mobile phones
having a few MBs of storage was
considered a huge feat. Today,
often one app or game we install
can use upwards of a GB of space!
Phones have kept up with the
demands of ever storage hungry
consumers, and have started pushing the boundaries of Micro SD
card storage. Microdia announced a 512 GB micro SD card in 2015,
but it’s still not available from what we can tell. 256 GB is though.

15 Bluetooth
Bluetooth is easily one of the most iconic
milestones in mobile phone technology. Short
range, wireless transfer of files was made easier
than ever, by Bluetooth. Today, mobile internet
speeds have made file transfer technologies a relic
of the past, but Bluetooth hangs on by providing
wireless connections to earphones and speakers,
with very good digital audio quality. It’s also the default wireless
connection standard for other accessories.
WAYS IN WHICH MOBILE
PHONES CHANGED OUR LIVES,
WITHOUT US NOTICING
You may not realise it, or be too young
to remember how life was before mobiles,
but we do...
10 15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives

1 Mobile phones have ruined your sleeping patterns

After a weary day of work, all
we really want to do is crash on our
bed, and pass out into the blissful
realm of sleep. But guess what?
We can’t (or don’t) really do that
without posting roughly a few hun-
dred status updates on Facebook,
complaining about the traffic on
Twitter, or laughing at weird people on Tumblr. Most of which we
do after we’re done with our daily routine, in bed. Although, after a
day of staring at a computer screen, you’d think staring at another
screen for hours pointlessly would feel like a bad idea, and yet we do it!

2 Made you averse to actual human interaction

With the rise of telephonic conversations, it’s easier than
ever to pick up a phone and call
other people. However, it has
robbed people of the actual fun
of meeting other people and
talking to them. You can talk for
hours, on text, but when you meet
someone, in the flesh, it is difficult
15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives 11

to even maintain a short conversation. We’ve become so used

to to-the-point conversations, that long, winding conversations
seem like a waste of time. Even having long telephonic conversa-
tions are considered to be pointless and time consuming. One
prefers exchanging texts with another person, rather than talking
to them face-to-face.

3 Made you calmer

Travelling by public transport is
a daily labour for many of us. Earlier,
people were more inclined to bash
your teeth out, if you so much as
accidentally brushed againt them.
After the meteoric rise in smart-
phone sales, everyone has a smart-
phone, and the moment they get
onto the train or bus, they plug their earphones in, and enter their
own little worlds, making them a lot less inclined to maim you, if you
nudge them accidentally.
Whether it be watching funny cat videos, or listening to music.
It has made daily commute a lot more tolerable for a lot of us. There
are finally more interesting things to see than some else’s armpit or
nose hair in our crowded transportation.
12 15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives

4 Made you trigger happy

After mobile phones with cam-
eras became common place, almost
everyone can be seen toting around
a camera phone, taking pictures of
whatever they find interesting. From
Snapchat to Instagram, anyone with
a smartphone will invariably click a
picture of whatever they’re going to eat, and then post it to social
media or chat groups, or whatever they can think of, whilst their food
gets cold. Then there’s the trend of obsessive selfie-clicking that
we cannot fathom. Phones have made the lives of students easier
though, as sharing of notes is easier than ever before.

5 Helped you remember things more efficiently

Since the invention of mobile
phones, manufacturers have been
looking for newer ways to make a
mobile phone more useful than it
already is. Almost all basic phones
come with alarms, and they have
multiple customising options too.
From the ring tone, to the number
15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives 13

of times it rings. After the dawn of smart phones, reminders and

calendars have become an indispensable part of smartphones –
there really is no excuse for forgetting an anniversary, or a deadline
anymore, and that’s not necessarily a good thing for some of us.

6 Always available
Once you get a new mobile
phone, it never leaves your side.
More faithful than a dog, and cer-
tainly interacted with more, your
phone is your best buddy. It’s also
the reason why you can be con-
tacted and disturbed anytime, any-
where. Asleep? Your phone doesn’t
care. It will invaribly ring when you’re in the shower, the loo, in a
meeting, having a romantic time, in the hospital, dead... whatever!
Not just ringing, texting has made it so that no one thinks twice before
messaging you at 3 am, and we’re so used to being contactable that
waking up to read messages is almost normal for too many of us.

7 Compulsive updaters
You’re on a train? How novel! You’re eating cake? Wow, can
we watch you do it? What’s the guy sitting in front of you on the
14 15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives

train wearing? Really? He has

the exact same shoes as you?
No, we’re shocked that someone
else also bought the same mass
produced shoes as you. Honestly,
we really overdo the compulsive
updating sometimes.

8 Connected people
No matter where you are,
you’re usually connected to
the internet. It almost feels like
someone blinded you, or hacked
off a leg when you realise that you
don’t have data access somewhere.
how are you supposed to find your
way anywhere without Google Maps. What? Ask for directions? Are
you kidding?

9 Doesn’t let you get bored

Whether you’re waiting at a bus stop, or doing nothing in par-
ticular, your smartphone always has something or the other to make
your wait, or your life seem less dull. From games, to books and
15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives 15

newspapers, the internet has it all.

It’s no wonder that battery tech-
nology is what everyone hates.
There’s nothing more boring than
being stuck waiting with a dead
phone. We’d say talk to other
people, but they’d be irritated that
you were distracting them from
their phones, so we can sympathise!

10 Made you lazy

Whatever you can think
of, there’s an app for it. Ordering
food? There’s a few hundred apps
for that. You don’t even have to call
them. Just start the app, select what
you want, and send them the order.
You don’t even have to look for the
menu, or even make the effort to
call them.
Even calling for a cab. You don’t have to wait by the side of the
road, waiting for a cab to turn up. You can ask for one, on the app,
send them your location, and they’ll tell you when the cab is nearby.
16 15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives

11 Made our pockets/backpacks/purses lighter

A phone is not just a
means to make calls or send text
messages, anymore. It’s become
a camera, a map, a notepad, a
computer, and even a mirror, all
crammed into the little device we so
casually carry around in our hands.
It’s made life so much easier for
us, because we don’t have to carry around any of those things in our
bags or pockets. It’s even become a key, for some smart lock systems!

12 Turned into hand candy

Mobile phones are getting
sleeker, thinner, and more elegant
looking by the day. Every genera-
tion of smartphones is thinner, and
better built than the last generation.
They’ve also become a bit like
status symbols. Where, if one is
seen carrying around a high-end
phone, it might be a direct correlation to their economic status, or
coolness factor.
15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives 17

13 Brought parents and children closer (sometimes)

Mobile phones have made it sim-
pler for parents to contact their children
and have made it easier for them to keep
track of their children’s activities. It’s even
helped children check on their parents,
through a number of apps, and even have
face-to-face conversations, with them.
On the other hand, parents also think
that smartphones affect their child’s academic performance, and
take away the smartphone, which they believe is the culprit. That
might lead to a few bitter exchanges between them. Plus, phones
have only made you closer to parents who live far away, if you’re in
the same house, parents often complain that phones have made
you more distant!

14 More power to the

common man
With information being shared
instantaneously, across the globe,
it is easy for the common man to
keep up with the various happen-
ings in the world. From the death of
18 15 ways in which mobile phones changed our lives

a celebrity, to a government being overthrown, we get all the updates,

from all over the world.
It’s not just news, but weather updates, and learning how to
maximise crop efficiency, etc., all of this has helped the common
man across the globe. Of course, “common” here means at least
being able to afford an internet enabled phone!

15 Have made it easier to socialise in real life

We know we’re directly
conflicting with point 2 in this list,
but we do so on purpose. Although
phones may have cut down actual
human interaction to a minimum,
we think that’s not so for the people
you really want to meet and hang
out with. When it comes to friends
or lovers, phones have enabled us to communicate and plan get-
togethers despite the busy schedules we all seem to lead. When you
want to meet as a group, just start the plan in a group chat.
Phone’s have also made it easier to meet new people with the
same interests as you, and plus, there’s always Tinder...
PHONES YOU DIDN’T
KNOW YOU WANTED
There are many phones in the global market
which you never get to see in India. This is a guide
to 15 of the most interesting of those.
20 15 phones you didn’t know you wanted

1 Creo Mark 1
Do you void your phone’s warranty
by rooting the device just to be able to
get additional features? Creo is a Ben-
galuru based startup which aims to get
rid of this menace by promising monthly
updates to their Fuel OS. They claim that
these updates will be new features, and
not just bug fixes. This startup claims it
will listen to its users and make regular
changes based on feedback from them.
It claims, “The phone that is better
tomorrow than it was yesterday.” Aimed
squarely at people who want to tinker
and change things, but are scared of losing warranty. Need a new
feature? Just drop them a line and ask for it.

Specifications:
Display: 5.50-inch display with 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution;
Processor: 1.9 GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio X10; Storage: 3GB
of RAM and 32GB internal with expandable microSD slot; Camera:

15 phones you didn’t know you wanted 21

2 Nextbit Robin
It’s safe to assume that almost no
one is happy with their smartphone’s
inbuilt storage. Nextbit is going to
change all that. Meet Robin, Nextbit’s
flagship product, which has only 32GB
of internal storage, but adds on 100GB
of complimentary cloud storage that
archives phone data that is not being
used locally. With the option to easily
backup and restore from the cloud,
the phone comes with the NextbitOS,
which they claim gets better with every
update! It supposedly learns your habits
as you use your phone. Another cool feature of the Robin is the
fingerprint sensor on the power button making it very quick
to unlock.

Specifications:
Display: 5.2-inch, Full HD resolution; CPU: 2GHz hexa-core Qual-
comm Snapdragon 808; Storage: 3GB RAM, 32GB Onboard & 100
GB Online; Camera: 13 MP rear and 5MP front; Battery: 2680mAh;
USP: Complimentary 100GB Cloud Storage.

3 Cat S60
Caterpillar’s S60 is a phone which
comes with an inbuilt thermal camera.
It’s the world’s first smartphone to have
such a camera, and also, it is waterproof
for 5m in depth and drop-proof up to
1.8m making it the perfect choice for
engineers. But why the thermal camera?
The idea is to let users peek inside elec-
trical panels, structures, vehicles or other
enclosures and detect heat sources.
The thermal camera also works in pitch
black by detecting heat points. Cat S60
is priced at $599 (roughly `42k) which
is not a bad deal at all for a phone with
that list of features.

Specifications:
Display: 4.7-inch with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution; Processor:
Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53;
Storage: 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard; Camera: 13MP rear and
5MP front; Battery: 3800 mAh; USP: Thermal Imaging, tempera-
ture spot meter, heat palettes.
15 phones you didn’t know you wanted 23

4 Lumigon T3
After the great success of Lumigon
T2 HD, Lumigon launched T3 which is
another masterpiece by the company. The
company claims that the T3 is manufac-
tured using ultra-hard molybdenum and
marine-grade stainless steel, so you don’t
have to worry about the phone not being
solidly built. It’s got a whopping 128GB
of internal storage, and unless you’re the
type who likes to carry around tonnes
of music and full HD movies or videos,
this ought to have most people sorted.
Priced at $740 (about `50,000), this is
a high-end smartphone. It’s even got a
night-vision camera, and is available in a
24-carat gold variant. Obviously that costs a “little’ more.

Specifications:
Display: 4.8-inch with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution; Processor:
2.2 GHz 64-bit octa core; Storage: 3GB of RAM, 128GB onboard;
Camera: 13MP/4K back and 5MP/2K front; USP: Stainless Steel
Body, 128 GB internal memory, Night Vision Camera.

5 Jupiter IO 4
Ever wanted a phone you could smoke?
There is only one in the world, so it’s not like
you have a choice in the matter anyway. The
Jupiter IO 4 comes with an inbuilt vaporizer
(the kind used in e-cigarettes). The phone
has two batteries – one for the phone and
the other for the vaporizer. The innovation is
that if you’re not using the vaporizer, its bat-
tery can be used for the smartphone (upto
16 hours on both batteries we’re told). To
puff or not to puff, that is the question. The
variant in the picture is the 4G model that
is available for pre-order for $499 (`34,000 approx). There are
flavoured liquid cartridges available, priced at $15 (`1,000 approx)
including mint, peach and coffee. Vaporcade, the manufacturing
company, claims that each cartridge can provide about 800 puffs.
Remember, smoking (even just flavoured e-cigarettes) is a terrible
habit, and we advise you to quit immediately.

Specifications:
Not yet released by the company, and the phone still isn’t available
in the market for us to buy.

6 Oukitel K10000
Everyone’s pet peeve, when it
comes to smartphones, is the bat-
tery life. When it comes to mAh, we’re
of the opinion that you just can’t have
enough. Or so we thought, until we
came across this crazy phone. Oukitel,
a Chinese company, decided enough
is enough and crammed a 10,000mAh
battery into a smartphone. So what
does a 10,000mAh battery get you?
How does 15 days on a single charge
sound? Take it with a pinch of salt, but
still, we think it certainly ought to get
even heavy users through one day
(3 days of simple use). That’s good
enough for us!

Specifications:
Display: 5.5-inch at 1280x720; Processor: 64 bit MediaTek MT6735
clocked at 1GHz; Storage: 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM; Camera: 8MP
(S13MP) back + 2MP (S5MP) front; Battery: 10000mAh, Flash
Charging at 9V/3A; USP: 10000mAh battery.

7 Kyocera Digno Rafre

No matter how careful you think
you will be with your phone, you are
bound to spill a liquid (usually water,
or coffee) on it. For the clumsy ones
who spill icky-sticky-stuff, here’s a
phone you don’t have to worry about,
because you can actually wash and
scrub it clean! The Kyocera Digno
Rafre is a smartphone which is
not just waterproof, but can also
be washed with soap. See, soapy
water has a lower surface tension
than regular water, and seeps into
even waterproof phones (but not
this one). For just $460 (`31,000
approx), you can choose to forever have a sparkly phone that’s
clean enough to eat off of!

Specifications:
Display: 5-inch x 1280x720; Storage: 2GB + 16GB; Camera: 13MP
rear, front unknown; Battery: 3000mAh;
USP: Washable Smartphone.
15 phones you didn’t know you wanted 27

8 Desay Magical Mirror X5

Although sapphire screens
have been hyped, there aren’t too
many smartphones that come with
them. The Desay Magical Mirror X5,
however, is one such phone. The
sapphire screen display is made
out of sapphire crystals, which is
the second hardest metal after dia-
mond. The Magical Mirror X5 sports
a 5-inch 720p HD display, p[owered
by a quad-core MediaTek processor
supported with 1GB RAM and 16GB
internal storage. This device is priced
around $160 (roughly `11,000). If
you want a tough screen but are
strapped for cash, you’re not going to get too many sapphire
screen devices in this price range.

Specifications:
Display: 5-inch at 1280 x 720; Processor: quad-core MediaTek;
Storage: 1GB RAM + 16GB; Camera: 13MP rear + 5MP front;
Battery: 2050mAh; USP: Sapphire Screen

9 Sharp Aquos Crystal

For those of you who hate
bezels, here’s a phone to go along
with your bezel-less TVs and moni-
tors. The Sharp Aquos Crystal is the
first smartphone to deliver a striking
looking bezel-less screen. It sports
a 5-inch 720p display, which has a
sharp edged look (obviously). The
colours of the 720p display are well
saturated and the display is pretty
bright. Videos and pictures look
gorgeous, but you’re going to have
to sacrifice being able to see whats
under the edges under your fingers
as you hold the phone. That said, its
a worthy sacrifice to have something this quirky.

Specifications:
Display: 5.0 inches at 720 x 1280 pixels; Processor: Quad-core 1.2
GHz Cortex-A7; Storage: 1.5 GB RAM + 8 GB; Camera: 8 MP Rear,
1.2 Front; Battery: 2040 mAh; USP: Bezel-less display

10 LG G5
We have been hearing about
modular smartphones but they were
only concepts, until LG launched the
G5 that is. The phone’s design has
been changed from plastic to micro-
dized metal. You can change the mod-
ules with components or ‘Friends’ as
LG terms it. The additional compo-
nents that can be added apart from
the battery are a separate shutter
button, a jog dial for zoom, and a DAC,
which gives you 32-bit audio and an
extra headphone jack.

Specifications:
Display: 5.3-inch at 1440 x 2560;
Processor: Dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo & dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo;
Storage: 4 GB RAM + 32 GB + expandable to 200GB; Camera:
16 MP (f/1.8) rear + 8 MP (f/2.4) front; Battery: 2800 mAh; USP:
Modular Smartphone

11 Blackphone 2
For whatever reason, everyone
seems to be seriously paranoid about
privacy these days. Maybe it’s because
people are clicking too many pictures of
themselves in birthday suits? It’s baffling
to us, but if you’re a pervert, intelligence
operative, have a large collection of tin-
foil hats, or if your surname is Snowden,
here’s a phone you might finally consider
secure. The Blackphone 2 comes with
SilentOS, which is basically Android
but without bloatware and data leaking
apps. It’s black, obviously, and comes pre-
installed with applications that put you
on control of your privacy and security.
If you trust Blackphone, that is.

Specifications:
Display: 5.5-inch, HD; Processor: Snapdragon Octa-Core; Storage:
3GB RAM & 32GB internal storage; Camera: 13 MP rear + 5 front;
Battery: 3060 mAh; USP: Privacy focused smartphone
15 phones you didn’t know you wanted 31

12 Saygus V Squared
If the 128GB phone we talked
of earlier is not enough for you, here’s
one that may have only 64GB of
internal storage, but it’s expandable
up to a whopping 400 GB. You know,
if you’re the type who likes to store full
HD videos of cats being cute, or maybe
videos of naughty kittens? Either way,
the Saygus V Squared makes sure you
have pretty good specs, and a lot of
storage. We just wish it looked a little
better. You can buy a developers ver-
sion that gives you root access from
the get go. At just $650 (`44,000) this
device is a good buy.

Specifications:
Display: 5-inch, 1920 x 1080p; Processor: Snapdragon 801;
Storage: 3GB RAM + 64GB onboard + expandable 400GB;
Camera: 21MP rear + 13MP front; Battery: 3100 mAh; USP: High
end smartphone for low price.
32 15 phones you didn’t know you wanted

13 Turing Phone
This is a phone that’s made
of Liquidmorphium, or basically a
Liquid Metal alloy that’s supposedly
stronger than titanium or steel. The
screen is protected by Gorilla Glass
IV, and is a full HD 5.5-inch display.
Although built on Android, the
phone runs what the company calls
Sailfish OS 2.0. It has a custom UI, is
a 4G phone, but most importantly,
it’s supposed to have world class
security with end-to-end encryp-
tion. It has a fingerprint sensor on
the side, and will ship with Bluetooth
earphones, and the proprietary con-
nector and charging cable, because it has no headphone jack or
USB port. That’s the compromise you make for a waterproof phone.

Specifications:
Display: 5.5-inch at 1920 × 1080; Processor: Snapdragon 801;
Storage: 3 GB + 16GB ,64GB ,128GB; Camera: 13MP rear and 8MP
front; Battery: 3000 mAh; USP: Liquidmorphium

a gold-plated audio controller
to complement its Wolfson
WM8281 Audio Hub and Mar-
shall Mode in-ears. If you’re the
type who lives music and want

others are going to have.

tric phones and not have a Vertu in it.
The Vertu New Signature Touch is a
phone that has high-end specifica-
tions with a premium design. You get
to choose from 11 different colours and

ACCESSORIES
TEAM DIGIT
REALLY WANTS
Sometimes it’s not about the phones
themselves, but about the accessories,
and this is that story
36 15 accessories team digit really wants

1 Portable Speakers
Bowers & Wilkins T7
The T7 is Bowers and Wilkins
first portable Bluetooth
speaker and we think it’s quite
a fine attempt for a first shot at
something. Then again, Bowers and
Wilkins are known for their quality and style and
it’s quite evident from these speakers. The T7 are quite chunky.
With speakers, though, you know you have to sacfirice on portability
to get good audio quality. The upside to the chunkiness is that you
get a mammoth battery. They cost well over `20k, but we’d still love
to get our hands on them.

2 Headphones
SoundPEATS Qy7
The SoundPEATS Qy7s bluetooth
earbuds were designed specifically
for use during running or exercising.
They comes with adjustable earbud
tips and lobe stabilizers for a comfort-
able yet secure fit. They are also water
and sweat proof so that your intense
15 accessories team digit really wants 37

workout sessions don’t ruin the earbuds. You can choose between
all-black or the nice green-black colour in the picture. They’re simple
with a minimalistic control system, and have a decent battery life of
6-8 hours. Also quite reasonably priced, so maybe they’re not quite
out of our reach.

3 Stands/Docks
Steelie Car Mount
This car mount is
designed by Nite Ize inno-
vations and aims at giving you
a secure and stylish smartphone
mount. This mount isn’t phone spe-
cific, and works on just about any phone. The Steelie uses powerful
magnets to secure your phone. One magnet socket attaches to the
back of your phone, and a ball component that goes on your dashboard,
or whatever surface you want to mount your phone on. The dome
shape of the ball component allows for a wide range of viewing angles.

4 Stands/Docks
Breffo Spiderpodium
The Spiderpodium is an extremely versatile stand. Its uses exceed
that of simply mounting your phone on to a car’s dashboard. You can
38 15 accessories team digit really wants

mount it just about anywhere

if you can find something to
grab onto. So cycle or bike
handlebars, bag or purse
straps, no problem. It’s got
a surprisingly strong grip so
you don’t have to worry about
it dropping your phone. Also
it should work with just about
any phone (even tablets)
since it’s highly adjustable;
plus it’s cheap.

5 Stands/Docks
WoodPuck
The WoodPuck: Bamboo Edi-
tion Qi wireless charger pad
is appealing for many rea-
sons. First off, it’s made out of
bamboo. Yes, bamboo! Not only
does this give the WoodPuck a
nice wooden finish, it’s also
sustainable and eco-friendly.
15 accessories team digit really wants 39

Secondly, you can do away with the hassle of dealing with tangled
wires and cords. Thirdly, it’s very good looking, so you can show it
off instead of hiding it in a corner. Its wireless charging capabilities
however, only work with Qi enabled phones, so keep that in mind if
you plan to get this for yourself.

6 Lens
Olloclip
The Olloclip lens series is pretty
neat. They come in a bunch of
variations, including various angle,
colour, and zoom options depending
on the kind of pictures you want to
take. Olloclip cases come with inte-
grated rail mounting for tripods and
the option to attach external light
sources to it. They also add an extra
protective layer for your phone, as
an added benefit. These lenses are
made primarily for iPhones but
there are variants for the Samsung Galaxy models as well, which
kind of restricts its usability. It doesn’t matter though, we’d really
love to get our hands on one one of these.

7 Lens
Easy-Macro
The Easy-Macro is getting a mention here because of its uniqueness.
Easy-Macro is arguably the only smartphone lens accessory available
right now that will fit rather snuggly into your wallet. So you don’t have
to worry about bulky phones or large bulges in your pockets. The other
unique thing about the Easy-Macro lense is its simple design. It’s liter-
ally just a blue strap with a lens on it. Ingenious! Simplicity however, is
often appealing, and the added benefit is that the Easy-Macro will work
with any smartphone – past, present or future – so long as they don’t
suddenly decide to make phones triangular or something.

8 Cases
Lunecase
The Lunecase is a case made specifi-
cally for the iPhone. It’s only available
for the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 S as
of right now. Once the case is snapped
onto your phone, it gives you a noti-
fication whenever you receive a call
or a message. The notification shows
up in the form of a glowing icon that
displays on the back of the Lunecase.
The Lunecase will show you call notifi-
cations even before your phone starts
to ring. It’s highly customisable, and
has quite a few design options and colour schemes to choose from.

9 Powerbanks
Solpro HELIOS SMART
The Solpro HELIOS is a solar powered charger which is used like any
other powerbank or USB charger. The Solarpro HELIOS comes with
3 solar panels which, you guessed it, can be used to charge it with
solar energy – it gets bonus points for using a renewable energy
source. Of course it can be charged via cable as well. The HELIOS
42 15 accessories team digit really wants

comes with 2 output ports for charging, 1A and 2.1A. You can charge
anything from smartwatches, which have smaller batteries, to large
pads which require more power. You can use the 2.1 output to charge
phones faster as well.

10 Powerbanks
TeckNet iEP900
The TeckNet iEP900 is an all-weather powerbank with decent battery
capacity. At 9000mAh, it’s not the biggest
powerbank we’ve seen, but it’s one of the
sturdiest. It’s waterproof, dustproof,
and shockproof, making it a very
reliable gadget indeed. Its got
a nice rugged design and
look to it as well and it
comes with a compass
and a flashlight. They also
throw in a karabiner as well,
making it even easier to carry this
15 accessories team digit really wants 43

handy gadget along with you. Definitely something we’d want on our
camping and hiking trips.

11 Smartwatches
Tag Heuer Connected
Let’s get right to the point. The Tag
Heuer Connected is a ridiculously
good looking watch. Plus, it’s Tag
Heuer! At a glance it looks like any
other Tag Heuer watch but upon
closer inspection you’ll notice it’s more
bulkier than their usual stuff. Despite
the bulkiness the watch is supposedly
super light and extremely comfy. Tag
Heuer uses it’s own custom displays
with watch faces that are very detailed
and look downright amazing. They’ve
also adjusted it so that all your other smartwatch features are also
noticeable but not quite in your face and intrusive.

12 Controllers
Moga Pro Power Controller
The Moga Pro Power Controller is something every avid Android
44 15 accessories team digit really wants

gamer needs in their lives. It eliminates the

need to use the on screen controls for the
game. The Moga Pro is laid out similarly
to an Xbox Controller, which is a good
thing, since it has a familiar feel to
it. Its “SMRT lock” feature allows
it to accommodate the larger
smartphones that we find in
the markets today. In addi-
tion to a microUSB in port for
charging, its got a USB port to charge other devices as well,
such as the phone which is currently using the Moga Pro Controller.

13 Controllers
iControlPad
The iControlPad, unlike the
Moga Pro, has a more retro
feel to it. It looks like an old
school NES controller, with
additional features added to
it of course. It’s also far more
portable, and can fit in your
pocket like a phone. Also it’s
15 accessories team digit really wants 45

supposedly compatible with anything that has a Bluetooth chip, so

it should technically work with most devices today. Furthermore,
the iControlPad has a universal holder, so you can strap most of the
not-too-large phones to the top of the controller.

14 Others
ChargeCard
The Chargecard is a handy
tool to have on you at any
time. It takes up about as
much space as a credit
card, so you can pop it
into your wallet and leave
it there for whenever you
might need it. On one edge
of the card you can find
either a microUSB connector which should work for most android
and similar devices, or another connector made specifically for
iPhones. There’s a USB connector in the middle of the card at the
end of a foldable rubber arm. All you need to do is plug in your phone
to one end, fold out the USB connector and connect it to wherever
you please, again without the hassle of wires or cords. We’re really
against tangled wires.

15 Others
NFC Ring
The humble NFC Ring can do many things. In addition to being water
resistant and never needing to be charged, these rings can unlock
your smartphones just by sliding your hand (the one that’s wearing
the ring, obviously) across the back of your phone. You can share links
to pictures, websites, etc and turn the Bluetooth and WiFi on your
phones on and off with the swipe of your hand. Furthermore, you can
lock and unlock your doors with NFC Rings if you swap your locks for
NFC enabled ones, lowering the chances of you losing your keys.
