[INFOGRAPHIC].” Business Insider, Business Insider, 21 Aug. 2012,

2012-8
This website “How Post 9-11 Surveillance Has Drastically Changed America” discusses the
importance of the Patriot Act and how it relates to public surveillance today. It is an important
source for my topic because it discusses the main law that was put in place after multiple terrorist
attacks. It also shows a detailed infographic to help explain the steps of what this act is and how
it contributed to society. This is a reliable source because it advocates for this act that puts
stricter rules on surveillance in public occasions.

Parsons, Renee. “Operation Shamrock and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.” The
Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 10 June 2012, www.huffingtonpost.com/renee-
parsons/operation-shamrock-and-th_b_1406643.html.
This website “Operation Shamrock and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” discusses the
major program during World War II. This program allowed the Army to have legal access to
major communication companies such as RCA Global, ITT, and Western Union. This is a
reliable source because it discusses the process of how this program came to be and why it
contributes so much to public surveillance laws and why it is so easy to spy on the public today.

“Read ‘Engaging Privacy and Information Technology in a Digital Age’ at NAP.edu.”

National Academies Press: OpenBook, www.nap.edu/read/11896/chapter/13#349.
This website “Read Engaging Privacy and Information Technology in a Digital Age” discusses
how technology has changed over time and how it affects citizens. It is relevant to my topic,
public surveillance, because it talks about security cameras and why they are changing. They are
always being improved and updated and now they are practically everywhere that you go. The
author of this article just clears up how surveillance is used and the laws placed on it.

White, April. “A Brief History of Surveillance in America.” Smithsonian.com, Smithsonian

Institution, 1 Apr. 2018, www.smithsonianmag.com/history/brief-history-surveillance-america-
180968399/.
This website “A Brief History is Surveillance in America” is extremely important to my project
because it breaks down the overall history of public surveillance in the United States. The author
starts off by discussing the first convicted man of wiretapping and how many people viewed it as
wrong. It also discusses some laws that have been put in place on surveillance and how the
government controls most of the surveillance that is present through security cameras and
connections into phone records.
Counter-argument-
“What's Wrong With Public Video Surveillance?” American Civil Liberties Union, Aclu,
www.aclu.org/other/whats-wrong-public-video-surveillance.
This article is important because it mainly discusses the things that are wrong with public
surveillance. It is very relevant to my topic because I am discussing the positives and negatives
of having cameras on us everywhere we go. This article helps to clear up what the problems are,
such as the cameras being susceptible to abuse, the lack of limits, and the effects it will have on
the public people. I included some of these points in my written response because I think it is
important to understand both sides of something, even if you do not agree with it, because not
everything is perfect.
