From Team Alumni

Dear Alumnus,

Wish you a very Happy Diwali and a

Prosperous New Year!!

On behalf of the entire MIB, DSE

community we would like to greet you on
the Silver Jubilee of the launch of
PGDIM/MIB program. Apart from
accolades to our faculty and department,
we are grateful to our Alumni who have
carried us to a level, where we command
respect from the Industry Stalwarts.

We firmly believe that the Alumni are very

important for the institute and the role of
the MIB Alumni Team is to engage, energize and enhance MIB, DSE‟s leadership through a
strong Alumni Association. The goal of the MIB Team Alumni is to support the growth of
MIB, DSE in years to come. The key focus areas being: managing the Alumni Database, to
facilitate city chapter meets, Alumni Newsletter‟s and a yearly get-together of the Alumni.

Reflecting upon the Activities this year; the session started with a warm welcome to MIB
Batch 2010 – 12, which was then followed up by two power-packed events in the MIB
Calendar: Reminiscence and Erudition. We began by conducting City wise chapter meets,
followed by The Alumni Dinner which saw a turnout of 42 alumni from both MIB and
MHROD; we launched here the Alumni Directory “Asmita”, to commemorate our Silver
jubilee Year (e-mail us for your copy) and the MIB journal “Uday”. The event was followed
by Annual Convention which saw business leaders converging from several key industries.

The bygone quarter also saw a flurry of Activities on the Academic Front such as: Continued
publication of our Finance Newsletter “Finshastra”, Formation of IB Cell and the launch of
their maiden Newsletter “Vishwa-Vyapar”. We also established a Media Cell to Network
with our Alumni and Future Aspirants through various Social Networking Initiatives, and
Liaison with Media Houses and Media Cell‟s of other B Schools Across the country. We also
took a step further and worked on revamping the FCBAF Leadership, to lubricate the
interaction between the current students and the Alumni.

While we revamp our operations, and look for newer and reliable avenues to interact with
you, we also seek your support and suggestions. Your involvement is crucial to support the
ongoing initiatives. So please do help us engage, energize and enhance MIB, DSE‟s
leadership through a strong Alumni Association.

Farewell Party

It was that time of the year again when the

MIBans realize that the end of their journey
at MIB, DSE is in sight, and reflect on all
the good things that have happened over
the past 2 years, the good times they had
together and the wonderful moments of
Joy, Glory and despair (typically during the
exams) that they shared all this while.

It all began with a “Groovy” bash thrown

to the passing out batch of 2008-10, by the
juniors at “Et Al”, Rajouri Garden. What
began as a slow and lazy Sunday Afternoon
was soon set on fire as everyone hit the floor to the Peppy numbers being churned out by the
DJ.

The evening capped off with an informal

interactive session which was filled with
reflective thoughts, wishes for the future
and spam (old habits die hard here!!).
Towards the end, the seniors were left
contemplating on the best 2 years of their
life at MIB.

The event also saw faculty participation as

Ms. Abha Shukla and Dr. Kavita
Sharma, turned up to bid farewell to their
favourite students.

To end it all: “Saying goodbye is hard to do. Saying goodbye to a touchstone is even harder.”
We will miss you Batch 2008-10!!

Fresher’s Party

Jovial smiles and high spirits marked the

welcome party for the students of junior
batch of MIB which joined on 21 st July,
2010 .The party organized at Reverb,
TGIP-Noida manifested youth and
enthusiasm at its full flow. The foot
tapping music, the flash-freezing lights,
along with the excitement and high spirits
of the youth made the party unbridled and
exuberant.

Seniors looked on with a hint of

reminiscence, remembering similar
moments not too long ago. But nothing left
them far behind here. They jumped in with
equal excitement and vigour, diluting any
line of difference between the level of
energy and enthusiasm of the fresher‟s and
them.

The students thoroughly enjoyed

themselves and partied hard, as the DJ
churned out songs and beats that pepped up
the revelry. After dancing to their hearts‟
content and stuffing themselves with food,
students seemed totally content. However,
every good thing has to end sooner or later,
and the party had to be wound up and so it
was called off giving everyone time to
regain their breathe for the days ahead.

The party marked the beginning of

celebrations & hard work students would
be encompassing for coming crucial two
years of makeover at DSE.

Alumni Chapter Meets

The true wealth of any educational

institution is its Alumni. They are the
guiding light for us. In comparison to them
we are toddlers when it comes to competing
in the corporate arena.

In addition to Reminiscence, the annual

alumni dinner, the alumni team has taken
initiatives such as chapter meets, alumni
picnics and symposia to maintain a healthy
relationship with the alumni.

The Delhi chapter meet flagged off the

alumni activities for academic year 2010-2011. The event commenced at the Department of
Commerce, Delhi School of Economics and saw a great alumni turnout. The alumni shared
their ideas on how we can go about strengthening the alumni network, and restructure the
alumni trust and its activities. Adequate time was spent on discussing the restructuring of the
FCBAF board and making Reminiscence „2010 a success.

We did not limit chapter meets only to Delhi but in an effort to reach out to our out-stationed
alumni we organised chapter meets at Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad as well. The
Bangalore chapter meet was held at the Evoma Lounge on 21st August, 2010. The
initiative was encouraged and supported by some of our esteemed Bangalore based alumni
with a special mention to Mr.Vijai Swaminathan, who blessed us with his valuable time and
interest in guiding us even though he could not make it to the event.

The Mumbai chapter meet also took place the same day and witnessed a decent turnout. It
was held at Barista, Band Stand. The alumni showed its affection towards the students and
pledged for the betterment of the association.

Apart from the chapter meets at Mumbai and Bangalore we got a chance to greet our alumni
at Hyderabad in an informal meet but the
affection found there was no less than that
from all the other meets combined.

We are thankful to our alumni for

encouraging and helping us with these
initiatives. The alumni team wants to put in
a special vote of thanks to the faculty and
the course co-coordinator Dr. Kavita
Sharma who has always stood by us in all
the endeavours and supported us throughout
in making these events a big success.

Reminiscence

2010 marks the 25th year since the

inception of MIB (Erstwhile known as
PGDIM) course at the Department of
Commerce, Delhi School of Economics. It
was an opportune moment for bringing
everyone together and celebrating the
success of this course in International
Business. The course has managed to
carve a niche for itself on the Indian
education canvas and made a mark in the
business world.

The evening of 11th September (and No,

this wasn‟t jinxed at all ;)) at Forte Grand saw the „once in a year special‟ of MIB and
MHROD, the Reminiscence ’2010 - the Annual Alumni Dinner. The reason that makes this
evening special is that the event not only
gives the alumni a chance to relive the past
with old friends and perhaps find their
younger selves among the current batches
but the event also extends an opportunity
to the current batches to have a peep into
their futures and to find inspiration in a
wiser self.

Alumni Dinner is probably the most

awaited event on the MIB calendar. The
reason being, this event is not just a
platform for interaction for the students
and the ex-students; it is a meeting ground for the PGDIM and MIB Diaspora too. A time to
catch up with old friends, make new ones, share the memories of the years past, talk about the
accomplishments of the present and weigh the possibilities of the future.

The evening took off with all ex-students

arriving and surprising their old batch-
mates. The event started at around 8‟o
clock with the Alumni Committees of both
the courses addressing the audience. This
was followed by brief speeches by the
faculty, which included Dr. K.V.
Bhanumurthy, Prof. Shri Ram Khanna
and Dr. A. K. Singh. The inspirational
words of Dr. Bhanumurthy, the interesting
comments of Prof. Khanna and
encouraging words from Dr. A. K. Singh

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=141786&trk=myg_ugrp_ovr
made the efforts of the students behind the event worthwhile. The event also saw one of the
Highest Faculty Turnout from MIB in the form of Dr. Kavita Sharma, Dr. Sumati Varma,
and Ms. Abha Shukla apart from Prof. S.R. Khanna.

To commemorate the silver jubilee year

of PGDIM/MIB course the Alumni
Committee came out with an Alumni
Directory “Asmita” a tribute to our
Alumni, which was a never before
attained resource of contacts and
information about the alumni of the
institute going as far back as the batch of
1985 to the latest batch of 2010.

The event witnessed the Alumni turning

up in great numbers and enjoying the
dinner with their cronies and sharing the memories of the past. The Video Montage of
photos from earlier batches was loved and cheered by all. Throughout the event the students,
hosts, from the current batches kept the alumni dazzled and bound. The night ended with
applause and encouragement for the alumni team from both the alumni and our faculty
congratulating on the successful turning out of the event.

Placement Visits

The student teams from MIB and MHROD visited Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and
Kolkata this year for making corporate presentations. While the Mumbai Team managed to
tap a huge base of 66 companies, the Bangalore Team interacted with 44 companies. The
teams to Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ludhiana also showed tremendous results and tapped
around 10-12 companies in each of the two metros and about 4 companies Ludhiana.

All the teams witnessed enthusiastic responses from the Corporate and are hopeful of
converting some big names this time around for the Summer Internships and the Final
Placements, alike. The teams which included a representative from Team Alumni also
contacted the Alumni base in the cities they visited. Small get-togethers with the Alumni
were organized in every city, which helped us foster stronger relations with the sizable chunk
of our Alumni community located outside Delhi. The details of these events are covered
under the news item on „Chapter Meets‟.

We would be highly obliged if you could put our case forward with the HR division of your
company. Alternatively, we would request you to help secure an appointment for us with the
concerned HR individual looking after campus recruitments and we shall send a student team
to make a presentation.

Guest Lectures

In today's environment, hoarding knowledge ultimately erodes your power. If you know
something very important, the way to get power is by actually sharing it. A lecture is an
occasion when you numb one end to benefit the other.

We invite eminent personalities form various industries and institutions to lend valuable
information from their experiences to the students to enrich their knowledge.

Mr. Sudhanshu Panth, Resident officer, IMF

Mr. Panth was invited for the very first guest lecture of the session on 20th August 2010. He
began his talk by interacting with students. He asked the students about their knowledge
about IMF. He gave a brief description of IMF and what all aspects it deals with. His
lecture was based on his experience and knowledge spanning over some decades in the
industry. The lecture was a very brainstorming one as students came to know about how IMF
functions and different roles played by IMF like that of fire-fighter, financer, doctor etc.
Later students also asked the doubts and queries related to the lecture.

Mr. Kumar Vaibhav Tanwar, Trade Marketing Manager (Delhi & Rajasthan) - Godrej
& Boyce Ltd.

On 27th August 2010, Mr. Kumar Vaibhav

Tanwar was invited to deliver a lecture and
the topic was 'Branding‟. The session was
full of creative examples from the
advertising domain and also a prior survey
which the speaker did with some students
present there on how they identified brands.
The speaker apart from the topic being
discussed also threw light on general
philosophy of life and told the students that
it all about 'YOU'.

Erudition

Erudition‟2010, the annual business convention, in its 15th edition this year was themed
„Constructing Corporate Conscience: Introspecting the Resurgence‟. The event was held
over a period of two days, viz., September 17th and 18th, 2010, at Paintal Memorial
Golden Jubilee Auditorium, V. P. Chest Institute, in the heart of North Campus of the
University of Delhi.

The second day was graced by the presence

of His Excellency Julio de la Guardia, the
Ambassador from the Republic of Panama
to India, as the Chief Guest. The key-
theme presentation was given by Mr.
Satyan Mishra, CEO, Drishtee
Foundation, who we are also proud to
have as a member of the extended MIB
family, as sir is an alumnus of the MIB
programme.

Also, in continuing with our legacy of

acknowledging and appreciating the pride that our alumni bring to us each year, we had the
immense pleasure of honouring Mr. Chetan Bhargava, OEM Business Development
Director, Microsoft India who was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by MIB,
for being a source of much pride and inspiration to us students.

The conference had three sessions scheduled on both days, covering issues pertinent to
Finance, International Business, and Marketing. In keeping with the theme of the event
this year, the second day saw the sessions on Finance discuss the topic „A Ticking time-
bomb: Are we ignoring the lessons from the recent meltdown?‟ For the finance session we
had the privilege of having such speakers as Mr. S. D. Saxena, (Former Director
(Finance), BSNL), Mr. Vipul Verma (CEO, Moneyvistas.com), Mr. Atul Garg (VP-
Wealth Management, RR Financials), and Mr. Honey Karun, (Consultant, Planning
Commission of India) in the panel.

The second session of the day saw the

speakers discuss the rise of „The Ethical
Business: Doing well by doing good’. This
session on marketing questioned the intent
behind Corporate Social Responsibility,
whether is it really a good-hearted attempt
to help carry the society‟s burden, or is just
a marketing gimmick these days. We were
fortunate enough to have in the discussion
panel such luminaries as Mr. Vijay
Bhatnagar (CEO, Arcelor-Mittal India
and China), Mr. Alok Bhardwaj (Sr. VP,

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=141786&trk=myg_ugrp_ovr
Canon India), Mr. Abhishek Chaturvedi (CSR, Aircel) and Mr. Ashok Chakraborty
(Head CSR, ONGC), who discussed the theme in context of their experiences with their
organisations‟ CSR activities.

The final session of the day, and indeed a

fitting end to this year‟s edition of
Erudition was on International Business. It
discussed the practice of „Lobbying in
International Corridors: the thin line
between Influencing and Manipulating‟.
Mr. Rajendra Chand (Sr. Partner, DTA
Consulting Group), Mr. Satya N. Gupta
(Chief Regulatory Advisor, British
Telecom) and Mr. S. Bhattacharjee
(Executive Editor, Financial Express),
each with their own take and experience
with Lobbying formed the panel for the
discussion and ensured that the audience got to
have the benefit of learning from their first-
hand experiences.

The event has had the pleasure of playing host

to few of the biggest names from the corporate
world, the academia, the government and the
policy-making think-tanks as speakers. It,
therefore, provides a unique opportunity for
the students to interact with the movers and
shakers of the business world.

Launch of Media Cell and IB Cell

A management institution is a learning place which turns the young students of today into the
vibrant managers of tomorrow. It flags off our journey to the business and industry. This
learning yields results when there are proper systems and channels setup to turn the efforts
into useful practical solutions.

The setting up of Media Cell and IB Cell are a step towards moving forward in this direction
besides making the current systems more efficient and bring out the best talent at Delhi
School of Economics.

Media Cell

There is a brand equity associated with every entity. Each one of us is an Ambassador of
“Brand MIB”. The objective of the media cell is to present MIB as a brand. It aims at
collaborating with the various media houses and media cells of other colleges, making its
presence felt on social media by means of social networking sites and blogs. It serves as a
proper channel of communication between the campus and outside world, which includes
participation in important National Level B-School Surveys to promote visibility amongst
the future aspirants. The cell doesn‟t restrict itself to perform only this function but also
embraces the responsibility of communicating the information on different events, programs
and initiatives taking place at other institutions as well. The media cell also serves as a means
of correspondence for those seeking information about admissions (the potential MIBians),
campus events and happenings.”

The contact id for media cell is: mediacell@mibdu.org

IB Cell

The formation of the IB Cell fills in the major void felt in years past. With the objective of
sharpening the skills and knowledge at international business the cell aims at associating
itself with the international trade bodies and chambers of commerce.

The cell has taken up the responsibility to

invite the corporate and people from
international trading firms to help the students
try and learn the various intricacies of the
international business. Case studies, Group
Discussions, Paper presentations and Guest
lectures are the focus areas at improving the
standards at MIB.

It has recently come out with the first edition

of its newsletter “Vishwa-Vyapar”.

FCBAF - Operation Restructuring

The proposed FCBAF - Operation Restructuring is seen as a revolutionary step in the

direction of a „much awaited‟ Empowerment of the Department‟s strategic management
planning. What better than this move to embark upon the 25th year of PGDIM/MIB course
existence? The move was more than welcomed by not just the Team Alumni, but by all the
committees from MIB as well as MHROD.

The first meeting, presided by

the Head of the Dept., Prof. K.V.
Bhanumurthy, that chalked out the need
for the move and was attended by various
faculty members and the Conveners of
Team Alumni of MIB and MHROD. The
present lack of accountability in
FCBAF's working and minimal Alumni
Participation were acknowledged as the
key deterrents to the proper functioning
of FCBAF. Thus, it was decided to
emphasize upon the Alumni
Participation in FCBAF who will
mentor the present Teams/Committees
of MIB and MHROD.

The nominations from the Alumni community were sought for the FCBAF
Advisory Council. The second meeting saw an enthusiastic brain storming session between
the various committee representatives from the two courses, and the Alumni nominees. The
meeting was presided by Dr. Kavita Sharma, MIB Course Coordinator and Dr. A.K.
Singh, MHROD Course Coordinator. The Key Result Areas under various fields including
Dept. Support, Developing Student Quality, Alumni Mentorship, Course Accreditation
etc. were proposed to streamline the restructuring of the board. The Alumni participation
was applauded by the Course Coordinators and was seen as a directive and motivating force
by the Committee members. It helped in instilling a sense of confidence in them that together
they can bring about this revolutionary change which will have a positive spill-over effect for
years to come.

The subsequent FCBAF meetings will focus on a larger Alumni participation in

decisions related to betterment of the course. The proposed KRAs for each team will be
given a final shape and will be brought into effect from there on.
