0. General
This engineering guide provides information for applications in which Plasticon GRP piping materials
can be used. Detailed information on standard products can be found in the "Plasticon Product Manuals".
The design of a pipeline using Plasticon products means a construction with GRP pipes and fittings that
are all designed to meet the necessary high performance requirements.
Because of its benefits, the possibility of using prefabricated pipeline sections (pipe spools) should be
considered in the design stage of the piping system. The advantages of using pipe spools are a reduced
amount of joints to be made in the field, smaller assembly tolerances and shorter installation time.
If this guide does not cover certain engineering information, our engineers will be pleased to assist and
inform you of specific design possibilities and the latest improvements of Plasticon Europe.

1. Choice of product
PLASTICON produce following types of pipes and fittings:

1. Type D – acc. to DIN 16867, DIN 16965, DIN 16966.

Pipes and fittings of this type possess chemical resistance layer with min. 2,5 mm thickness.
Structural layer is radius winded with rovings, woven and chopped strand glass mats.

2. Type E – acc. to DIN 16867, DIN 16965, DIN 16966.

In this type chemical resistance layer is min. 2,5mm. Pipes and fittings with wall thickness up
to 6,5mm are made only of chopped strand glass mats. Thickness wall are reinforced with
woven glass. Because of such laminate structure this type can be especially use in very
aggressive medium.

3. Type MP – acc. to PLASTICON STANDARD.

Chemical resistance layer is min. 0,5mm. Structural layer for pipes is cross-winded with glass
rovings. Pipes and fittings are connected by glue with conical bells.

4. Type MR – acc. to PLASTICON STANDARD.

Chemical resistance layer is min. 2,5mm. Structural layer for pipes is the same like type MP.
Pipes and fittings are connected by glue with conical bells.

5. Type DS – acc. to PLASTICON STANDARD.

Chemical resistance layer is min. 0,5mm. Structural layer for pipes and fittings is the same like
type D.

We also offer special execution:

1. Execution A
There are pipes and fittings type D, E, and MR with inner layer with anti-abrasive additive.

2. Execution AA
There are pipes and fittings type D, E, and MR with outer layer with anti-abrasive additive. Pipes
A and AA find application particularly in products with abrasive hazard like: spray systems in
chemical equipment.

Range of types, diameters and nominal pressures for pipes, fittings and connexions were given in
Tables: I.1, I.2, I.3, I.4. All elements are constructed with safety factor 6.
Because of its benefits, the possibility of using prefabricated pipeline sections (pipe spools) should be
considered in the design stage of the piping system. The advantages of using pipe spools are a reduced
amount of joints to be made in the field, smaller assembly tolerances and shorter installation time.

Plasticon pipes and fittings can be applied in a various number of applications. When designing a GRP
piping system, a number of designing parameters must be considered when determining the choice of
a certain combination of product type and resin type.
The most important parameters are:
- medium,
- working pressure,
- working temperature.

The numerous possible combinations make it impossible to present ready-made combinations. Plasticon
Europe therefore always carefully studies each case in order to determine the proper combination.
It is however possible to provide a certain amount of standard information that is also used by Plasticon
Europe when evaluating a case.
(The applied resin is often determined by the medium specifications.)
Table I.5 shows the possible combinations of product type and resin type. Other options can be
discussed, if desired by the client and technically possible.

3. Head loss in pipes and fittings

A completely straight piping system with the same diameter over the full length, will only have head loss
caused by friction in the GRP pipe. This is relatively low due to the smooth inner surface of the pipe
(wall roughness Ra = 0.5 µm acc. to EN ISO 4287:1998). Flow charts giving the head loss of a
diameter/flow/velocity combination are illustrated in figures 3.3 and 3.4. These figures illustrate the head
loss of a pipeline system in meters water column, per meter pipe length (water temperature = 10o C). At
higher temperatures the kinematics viscosity of water decreases, resulting in even lower head losses.
However, generally speaking a piping system also has elbows, tees, reducers, etc., which cause extra
head loss. This extra head loss that is caused by fittings is determined by using the following formula:

Z = 0.5 * ζ * v 2 * r Z= Head loss caused by a fitting [N/m2]

ς= Friction coefficient [-]
v= Velocity of the medium [m/s]
r= Density of the medium [kg/m3]

The friction coefficient ς for fittings is given in tables III.1 and III.2. The head loss caused by a fitting is
then translated into an equivalent pipe length ∆ and is calculated by using the following formula:
∆= Equivalent meters pipeline [m]
Z
∆ = Z=
Y=
Head loss caused by a fitting
Head loss caused by a pipe
[N/m2]
[m.wc/m]
Y * g * 1000
g= 9.81 [m/s2]

This simplified method of calculation is sufficient if the total equivalent pipe length of the fittings is short
when compared to the total length of the pipes.
Note that the water volume delivered by a pipeline also depends on the following factors:
- head (or pressure) available at the source (pump or reservoir),
- difference in elevation between source and discharging point,
- diameter of the pipeline,
- friction losses caused by valves, etc.
The following tables show friction coefficients for various fittings:

4. Jointing methods for pipes and fittings

Plasticon Europe applies a number of joining methods to connect pipes and fittings. These joints are
designed to withhold a full axial load caused by internal pipeline pressure.

4.1. Bell-spigot joint

The bell-spigot joint (figure 4.1) is bonded with two-component epoxy adhesive, e.g. Araldit 2014 or
Araldit 2015. The bell is integrally winded together with the pipe or fitting. This joining method is
possible with MP and MR products and is designed to withhold pressures up to 16 bar (x safety
factor 6).
These joints have a high mechanical resistance and furthermore have the advantage of quicker assembly,
when compared to other joining methods.

Fig. 4.1. A bell-spigot joint.

A disadvantage is the limited by temperature range. Piping systems with medium temperatures exceeding
90° C must therefore be connected by using overlaminate.

4.2. Overlaminate

Overlaminate (figure 4.2) is a glass fibre reinforced laminate, suitable for all diameters and designed to
withhold maximum pressures up to 16 bar (x safety factor = 6), depending on the product-type.
The overlaminate is standard for TYPE D, E and DS in the entire Plasticon diameter range.
The preparations of this joint however require more craftsmanship than a bell-spigot joint.

4.3. Flanged joint

Flanged joints are recommended when easy assembling and disassembling of pipes and fittings is
preferable or necessary. GRP-flanged joints can also be applied when GRP pipelines connect with, for
example, flanged steel pipes. These joints are available in two different types:

- two fixed flanges (figure 4.3),

- two collars with loose flanges (figure 4.4).

All types are available in all diameters.

Fig. 4.3. Two fixed flanges. Fig. 4.4. Two collars with loose flanges.

Loose flange can be made both of GRP (up DN 500) and of steel. Plain washers should always be used
between the GRP flange, bolt and nut when mounting.

5. Gasket specifications
Gaskets made of elastomers (rubber and soft plastics) are used between collars with loose flanges but are
not recommended for pressures exceeding 10 bar. This because of the low limit of stretching strain of
these materials. An exception is the so called profile gasket that can withhold 16 bar.
Gaskets used in flanges with tongue and groove, in which the gasket is completely enclosed, can be app-
lied at higher pressures than 10 bar. Generally gaskets made of elastomers easily assume the shape of the
flange surface without needing high deformation forces.

Plasticon Europe applies the following types of gasket:

- Ring gasket (Fig. 5.1):

This is neoprene-rubber gasket plate with inlayers and a smooth surface on both sides. It has
a universal acid resistance and excellent lifespan.
This gasket is the type that is most frequently used by Plasticon Europe.

- Profile gasket (Fig. 5.2):

This is a flange gasket ring with an steel inlay. Due to the sphere form of the rubber part, even low
flange pressures result in a good sealing. A profile gasket is excellent for use on coated, enamelled or
gelcoated flanges.

Fig. 5.1. Ring gasket. Fig. 5.2. Profile gasket.

Full face gaskets are standard (figure 5.3), whilst raised face gaskets (figure 5.4) can be provided on
request.

flanges.

6. Supports
6.1. Supporting distance

A piping system must have adequate support. Good supports at regular intervals will minimise stress on
the piping system. Generally Plasticon piping systems can be supported the same way as steel piping.
The spacing of supports however will be somewhat shorter for GRP than for steel pipes. All hanging
types of support should be mounted to rigid structures in order to prevent additional induced stress in the
piping system. Thanks to the low weight of GRP, it is possible to support smaller piping systems on
existing steel piping. The maximum support distances for different types of pipe, in various pressure
classes and temperatures are listed in table VI.1.
The calculations of these distances are based on water filled pipes with a specific gravity of
ρ= 1000 kg/m3.
These tables enable the selection of a piping system for a given support distance or show the maximum
allowable distance between the supports for a given piping system.
The support distance depends on the maximum allowable sag, which has been defined at 0,15 0/0 of the
span length. The determining factor is the allowable sag, which does not change with a reduction of the
operating pressure.
When determining the position of supporting clamps, the span length of elbows may not be included in
the calculated supporting distance. After every elbow the placing of a support is recommended.

6.2. Single span length

The single span length L can be defined as the length L between two supports of one single pipe.
This length is calculated with the following formula that is based on the maximum allowable sag:
(figure 6.1)

L : Single span support distance [mm]

E t (axial) * I Et(axial) : Elastic reference modulus
L = 0.5040 * 3

6.3. Supports

Thermal expansion or shrinkage can cause axial movements of a pipe. Pressure surges caused by the
starting of pumps and/or the closing of the valves (water hammer) can also have a similar effect.
Supports that enable a pipe to move freely in axial direction, should have smooth inner surfaces that
avoid damaging of pipe.
This protective rubber layer on the inside of the support (clamp) is therefore strongly recommended. The
hardness of the rubber inlayer should be 50-60° shore.
For the supporting of piping systems, several types of clamps can be used as illustrated in figures 6.2 to
6.4.
Point- and line loading must be avoided and therefore flat straps should be used. Table VI.2 shows the
advised minimum strap width for diameters from DN 25 up to and including DN 400. For larger
diameters the minimum strap width depends on the position of the pipe.

Clamps should be used:

- in piping systems where the joint is not designed to transmit bending forces,
- on both sides of any change in pipeline direction,
- on both sides of an anchored valve or pump,
- on both sides of a compensator or expansion loop.

7. Thermal expansion
7.1. The coefficient for thermal expansion

The coefficient for thermal expansion used in the temperature calculations for Plasticon GRP products is
approximately 25 * 10-6 1/°C. Various thermal expansions at a given ∆T are shown in table VII.1 (pipeline
length 100 meter).

[mm]

Table VII.1. Thermal expansion (∆L) per 100 meter pipeline length.

Thermal expansion of contraction can be compensated by material flexibility. When this is not possible
compensators or expansion loops can be used. More information regarding these items can be found in
paragraphs 7.4 and 7.5.

7.2. Anchoring points

Anchoring points are used to anchor a certain point of the pipeline. The expansion of a pipe is thus
directed from a fixed point towards the supports next to the anchoring point. The pipe should has
possibility to move within the anchoring points. The best locations for such anchors varies with the
piping system, its shape and the amount of expansion. Normally they should be placed near elbows, tees
and, where necessary, between expansion loops and/or bellows in free dilating systems.
An anchoring point can be created by use of two GRP rings as illustrated in figure 7.1. A GRP ring can
consist of a laminate wrapped around a pipe on each side of the pipe clamp or two pieces GRP pipe
connected on the headline with epoxy adhesive.

Fig. 7.1. Example of an anchor point.

A system can be studied, evaluated and engineered by Plasticon Europe as a service to clients, in order
to determine the best solutions.

7.3. Anchor loads

Although Plasticon pipes have a higher coefficient of linear thermal expansion than steel pipes their
lower axial modulus of elasticity results in low expansion forces (compared to steel) at the anchoring
points, when the pipeline is subjected to a temperature increase.

The anchor loads that are listed in table VII.2 have been calculated with the following formula:

F : Anchor load [N]

∆T : Temperature increase [°C]
π
× ( D 2 − DN 2 ) × E t (axial ) × α × ∆T
D : Outer pipe diameter [mm]
F= DN : Inner pipe diameter [mm]
4 Et(axial) : Elastic reference modulus
(Longitudinal direction) [N/mm2]
α : Coefficient of linear expansion [1/°C]

As a rule, no expansion loops or compensators are required, although the distance between the supports
should be reduced when there is a risk of increased axial stress.
However, when the expansion forces exerted on the anchoring points are considered to be excessively
high, compensation of the load can be achieved by using compensators or in some cases expansion loops.

7.4. Compensators

Various types of compensators have been used successfully in combination with PLASTICON piping
systems. Due to the fact that the forces developed during a temperature change are relatively small
compared to steel pipelines, it is essential to specify a compensator, which is activated by low forces.
Specification sheets from manufacturers can be provided by Plasticon Europe. Temperature and
pressure ratings should be checked to determine whether a particular compensator meets the design
requirements of a specific system. The force necessary to compress a compensator is also listed in the
specification sheets. Three important designing considerations that apply to systems with compensators
are:
1. The compensator must be selected and installed in such a way that it can accommodate any motion, in
any direction that may occur in a system.
2. Suitable anchors must be provided to restrain the compensator.
3. Appropriate guides must be installed to assure that the pipe will move directly into the compensator.
An example is illustrated in figure 7.2.

Fig. 7.2. Example of how a compensator can be supported.

In some cases, the limited expansion and the cost of compensators make it economically impractical to
use compensators. In these cases, thermal expansion can be absorbed with expansion loops or by using
direction changes in a pipeline.

7.5. Expansion loops

Another method of relieving longitudinal stress between anchors in a supported pipeline, is the use of
expansion loops.
The design data for expansion loops are based on the theory of stress developed in a cantilevered beam
with concentrated load at the free end.
Details of the design approach of an expansion loop exceed the scoop of this document but can however
be supplied by Plasticon Europe on request.
An example of an expansion loop is illustrated in figure 7.3.

Fig. 7.3. Example of an expansion loop.

7.6. Absorption of expansion by change of pipeline direction

In some Plasticon piping systems expansion in the system can be absorbed by using other methods than
compensators or expansion loops, for example by means of a change of direction of the pipeline.
When this method of stress absorption is used, it is important that a pipe does not experience a bending stress
greater than the design bending stress.

This amount of stress in a pipe at a given expansion or contraction depends on:

- The total increase or decrease of length (∆L).

- The distance between supports, taking into mind that the recommended support distance is not disregarded.

This method of absorbing stress is usually the most economical in piping systems with large thermal
expansions.
Each of these methods can be studied, evaluated and engineered by Plasticon Europe as service to the client.

8. Wall duct
When a pipeline must go through a wall, a wall duct is placed to protect the pipe during (thermal) expansion
and/or water hammer. Two possibilities can be distinguished:

New building
In a new building, where new walls are built, a wall duct of GRP can be placed (figure 8.1).
Plasticon Europe advises this for better protection of the GRP pipeline. The size of the wall duct is usually one
or two pipe diameters larger then the main pipeline.

Fig. 8.1. Example of a wall duct.

Existing building

When the building already exists there are a number of possibilities, which depend on the material of the
wall and the type of piping system.

All possibilities can be discussed with Plasticon Europe engineers.

9. Buckling pressure
The permissible buckling pressures for Plasticon type MP, MR and D pipes are given in table IX.1.
These pressures are calculated by using the following formulas:
P = Permissible pressure [bar]
P = P krit
S Pkrit = Critical bulking pressure [bar]

S = Safety (correction) factor [-]

The critical buckling pressure depends on the elastic properties and the geometry of the pipe. For non-
stiffened pipes with a length shorter than 6 x Da, the following formulas are used:

Pkrit = Critical bulking pressure [bar]

Es = Elastic reference modulus [N/mm2]

Da s3 5 Da = Outer diameter [mm]
P krit = 23.5* E s * *( )2
L Da
L = Pipe length [mm]

3 1 S3 = Wall thickness (Reinforcement [mm]

E t (hoop)4 * E t (axial)4 laminate)
Es =
E t (axial)
1- 0.1* Et (hoop) = Elastic reference modulus [N/mm2]
E t (hoop) (Circumferential direction)

Et (axial) = Elastic reference modulus [N/mm2]

(Longitudinal direction)
For non-stiffened pipes with a length longer than 6 x Da the following formula is used:
Pkrit = Critical buckling pressure [bar]

3 Et (hoop) = Elastic reference modulus [N/mm2]

s3 (Longitudinal direction)
P krit = 22 * E t (hoop) * ( )
Da S3 = Wall thickness [mm]
(Reinforcement laminate)

Da = Outer diameter [mm]

Note that the permissible buckling pressure P must be interpreted as illustrated below.

P = Pe - Pi

Full vacuum: Pe - Pi = 1 bar,

if Pe=atmospheric pressure (1 bar)

Note that higher permissible pressures can be applied by increasing the thickness of the reinforcement
laminate or by applying so called stiffening rings. Further details of these calculations exceed the scope

of this document. Specific cases can however be calculated by Plasticon Europe engineers.

10. Water hammer

When the velocity of a large amount of water flowing through a pipe is abruptly decreased or increased, a
violent change of the internal pressure occurs. This phenomenon is called water hammer. Water hammer
can occur either in gravity or in pumping pipelines.
Precautions must be taken not only against pressure increase (maximum pressure), but also against
pressure decrease (minimum pressure).
If the minimum pressure of the water in any part of the pipeline goes below the vapour saturation
pressure, the pipeline will be exposed to a dangerous situation because of the possibility of water column
separation. This water column separation should be avoided, for example by using a surge tank or an air
chamber.

10.1. Pressure wave velocity

The pressure wave velocity is used to calculate the pressure change in the pipeline, defined as water
hammer, and is calculated with the following formula:

1 a : Pressure wave velocity [m/s]

a = ρ : Unit weight of water [ton/m3]
ρ 1 DN g : Acceleration of gravity [m/s2]
* ( + ) K : Bulk modules of compressibility of water [ton/m2]
g K E t (axial) * S4 Et(axial) : Elastic reference modulus
(Longitudinal direction) [N/cm2]
DN : Inner pipe diameter [m]
S4 : Pipe wall thickness [m]

The velocities (a) shown in table X.1 have been calculated with the following values:

ρ : 1 [ton/m3]
g : 9.81 [m/s2]
K : 2.07 * 105 [ton/m2]
Et(axial) : According to Plasticon specifications [N/cm2]

Different situations can occur depending on the way the pipeline is constructed. However, calculations
according to the formula given before will not result in any significant differences.

10.2. Calculation of pressure change caused by water hammer

10.2.1. Rapid opening or closing of a valve

This is the simplified method of calculating the pressure change ∆P caused by the rapid opening or closing of
a valve. The time needed for this opening or closing (t sec) must be shorter than 2*(L/a)

In this case, the Joukowsky formula is used:

a
∆P = Pt - P0 = - * (V t -V 0 )
g

∆P : Pressure change caused by water hammer [mwc] (*)

P0 : Water pressure in a constant flowing situation [mwc] (*)
Pt : Water pressure at a given time after the valve has been operated [mwc] (*)
V0 : Flowing velocity in a constant flowing situation [m/s]
Vt : Flow velocity at a given time after the valve has been operated [m/s]

(*) [mwc] = [meters water column]

When the valve is fully closed and Vt = 0 m/s, the following formula is used:

V0
∆P = Pt - P0 = a *
g

This is the maximum additional pressure caused by water hammer.

10.2.2. Slow opening or closing of a valve

This is the simplified method of calculating the pressure change caused by the slow opening or closing of a
valve. The time needed for this opening or closing (t sec) must be longer than 2*(L/a).

The following formula (similar to Allievi's), is based on the assumption that during the time the first reflective
wave returns to the valve as a result of the closing of this valve, the pressure remains unchanged and that the
effective opening area of the valve is changed rectilinearly.

L * V0
n =
t * g * P0

L = Length of the pipeline [m]

t = Time needed for the closing or opening of the valve [s]

Pt n
∆P = = 1+ * (n ± n2 + 4 )
P0 2

The ± in the formula relates to the following:

- The "plus" (+) gives a pressure increase.

- The "minus" (-) gives a pressure decrease.
