Structural Design Proof Checking of Slab Culverts and Box Culverts

Project: Four Laning of Chettikulam to Natham section of NH-785 from Chettikulam (km
7.300) to Natham (km.36.690) on EPC mode under Bharatmala Pariyojna Phase-I in the State
of Tamil Nadu.
Observations on design and drawing submitted on 02-12-2018
Slab culverts
01) The drawings of slab culverts (widening) for the chainages CH @22+015,
CH@23+884, CH@24+550, CH@24+537, are checked and the observations are

a. The dimension variations are there in the abutment and wing wall between the
drawing submitted and the Standard Drawing of IRC SP 13-2004.

b. The design of slab is not submitted.

c. The details of connection work between existing structure and the proposed
widening to be specified separately for substructure and the super structure in
the drawing sheet with cloud markings at respective places.

Provision of expansion joint at the substructure is not advisable and the same
has to be approved by competent authority. (Water may seep and might
disturb the road formation)

If expansion joint is provided in the substructure then the specification for water
tightness in the expansion joint with the materials used has to be specified in the
notes with cloud marking.
Box culverts
01) The design and drawings of box culverts for the chainages CH @ 10+141 (CA CH
@10+145), CH @ 10+327 (CA CH @10+330), CH @ 20+524 (CA CH @ 20+533),
CH @ 27+980 (CA CH @ 28+140), CH @ 29+643 (CA CH @ 29+643), CH @ 29+624
(CA CH @ 29+643) & CH @ 30+779 (CA CH @ 30+805) are checked and the
observations are

Design
a. The design document is not submitted for any of the box culverts and the RCC
return wall.

Drawings
a. The dimensions details of RCC return wall is provided in the drawings but for
the reinforcement details it specifies to refer the drawing Number P-011-
NH785-RW-001. The drawing specified is not submitted.
b. Point number 5 in Notes states “The Safe bearing Capacity at founding level is
15 t/ m2. The same shall be verified at site before starting of work”. This point
has to be provided in bold with higher font size and it should be provided with
cloud marking.
