Course Objective
The objective of this course is to familiarize the student with the principle of operation, capabilities and
limitation of Electronics and instrumentation so that he will be able to use this knowledge effectively.

Unit Course Outcomes


 Understanding of various semiconductor diodes and their operations.

 Understanding of transistors, its characteristics and its types.
 Understanding of measuring system, classification and characteristics.

 Understanding of basic transducers and signal conditioning.
 To be familiarized with various types of sensors and their applications.

 To understand actuator principle and its types.

UNIT I (15 Hrs)

Semiconductor Diode: (07 lectures)


Theory of PN Junction diode, Band structure of open circuited PN Junction, Volt-Ampere
characteristics, Temperature dependence of PN diode, LED, LCD and Photo-diodes, Zener
diode as a voltage regulator.

Transistor & its Biasing: (08 lectures)


Transistor Symbols, Types of transistors, Transistor as an amplifier, Transistor characteristics
in CB CC and CE modes, Comparison of transistor connection, Transistor biasing- methods
of transistor biasing, Base resistor method, Biasing with feedback resistor, Voltage divider
bias method, Characteristics and Applications of Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET), UJT
and MOSFET, SCR-Equivalent circuit and V-I characteristics, SCR as a half-wave and full-wave
rectifier, Applications of SCR.

UNIT II(15 Hrs)

Measurement System: (07 lectures)


Generalized instrumentation system- Units and Standards, Calibration methods, Standards of
Measurements, Classification of Instruments and application, Static and Dynamic
Characteristics of Instruments, Classification of errors, Error analysis, Static characteristics-
Accuracy, Precision, Sensitivity, Linearity, Resolution.

Primary Sensing Elements & Signal Conditioning: (08 lectures)


Transducers and inverse transducers, Characteristics and choice of transducers, Input, transfer
and output Characteristics and its application, Strain gauge, LVDT, Piezoelectric crystal,
Photoelectric transducer, Operational amplifier, Characteristics of operational amplifier,
Attenuator, Amplitude Modulation and Demodulation, A/D & D/A Converters.

UNIT III (15 Hrs)

Automotive Sensors: (09 lectures)


Principles and applications and need of a sensor, Basic sensor arrangement, Types of sensors
such as – Piezoelectric sensor, Pressure sensor, Optical encoder, Ultrasonic sensor, Oxygen
sensor, Crank angle position sensor, Fuel metering, Vehicle speed sensor and Detonation
sensor, Altitude sensor, Flow sensor, Throttle position sensors.

Actuators: (06 lectures)


Actuators, Actuator types: Solenoid, Motorized, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, Electrical, Thermal,
Mechanical, Stepper motors and Relays.

Instructions for the Paper-Setter
Please go through these instructions thoroughly and follow the same pattern while setting the paper as the
students have been prepared according to this format.
Maximum Marks = 60 Time: 3 Hrs
Weightage per unit = 20 marks (excluding over attempt weightage)
1. Question Paper will consist of ten questions.
2. Section A of question paper is compulsory, containing five parts each of 2 marks covering the whole
syllabus (short answer type- total 10 marks)
3. Set three questions from each unit I, II and III. Students will attempt 5 questions selecting at least one
question from sections B, C & D. Each question carries 10 marks. Questions of Section B will be from
unit I, Questions of Section C from unit II and Questions of section D from unit III.
