No final do século XIX e com a intenção de substituir a série básica

(Águias), em circulação, o Kaiser Wilhelm II encarregou o artista gráfico
alemão Paul Waldraff de realizar o desenho destinado a uma nova série
de selos.
Estava-se nos inícios do século XIX e a Alemanha, agora unificada e
transformada num poderoso império colonial, desejava aproveitar a
identidade nacional e a divulgação que proporcionavam os selos, sobre tudo
devido à ampla cobertura mundial que o correio começava a ter, graças ao
desenvolvimento do comércio e dos meios de transporte.
Para que o selo tivesse impacto procurou-se representar a imagem da
Alemanha numa figura feminina que encarnasse os valores da pátria. Assim
surgiu “Germânia”, inspirada na mitologia guerreira como arquétipo do
império.

In the end of XIX century and with the intention to substitute the basic
series (Eagles), in circulation at that time, the Kaiser Wilhelm II putted in
charge to the graphical artist German Paul Waldraff to carry through the
drawing destined to a new series of stamps.
It’s the beginning of XIX century and Germany, now unified and
transformed into a powerful colonial empire, desired to above all use to
advantage the national identity and the spreading that provided the
stamps, due to ample world-wide covering that the post office started to
have, thanks to the development of the commerce and the ways of
communication.
To have a powerful impact was decided to represent the image of Germany
in a feminine figure that incarnated the values of the native land. Thus
“Germania” appeared, inhaled in warlike mythology as the symbol of the
empire.
O desenhador teve como modelo a actriz Anna Fuhring (segundo alguns
amiga pessoal do kaiser Wilhelm II), e desenhou uma série de esboços e
projectos até chegar ao modelo final.
No dia 1 de Janeiro de 1900 emitiu-se a primeira série: Dez selos com
valores faciais em “pfennig” sendo quatro deles em “marcos alemães”.
Todos eles tinham a inscrição “Reichspost” (correio imperial).

The designer had as model the actress Anna Fuhring (according to some
personal friend of kaiser Wilhelm II), and it drew a series of sketches and
projects until arriving at the final model.
In day 1 of January of 1900 it was emitted first series: Ten stamps with
face values in “pfennig” being four of them in “German Marks”. All they had
the registration “Reichspost” (imperial post office).
Ao longo da sua longa existência os selos da série “Germânia”, foram
utilizados no correio normal alemão, foram impressos em inteiros postais,
serviram como forma publicitária agregando ao selo vinhetas publicitárias,
foram utilizados durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial nos territórios ocupados
com sobrecargas identificativas do país ocupado. Foram ainda reproduzidos
pelos aliados como forma de propaganda militar, como valores de taxa
aquando das dificuldades do pós guerra, como selos coloniais alemães e
como selos de beneficência. Serviram ainda no novo, aventureiro e pioneiro
correio aéreo que por aqueles tempos dava os primeiros passos.
Os selos deste tipo prestaram aos correios alemães um enorme serviço e
são possuidores de uma enorme carga histórica, apetecível a qualquer
coleccionador de selos.
Encontram-se vários tipos, em cores diversas e com legendas e
sobrecargas variadas que nos contam inúmeros factos de relevância
histórica.

Throughout its long existence the stamps of the series “Germania”, had
been used in the German normal post office, had been printed matters in
postal cards, had served as advertising form adding to the stamp
advertising vignettes, had been used during the World War I in the
occupied territories with local overprints.
Still they had been reproduced by the allies as form of military propaganda,
In Germany as values of tax after World War I, as colonial stamps and as
beneficence stamps.
They had still served in the new, adventurer and pioneer air mail that for
those times gave the first steps.
The stamps of this type had given to the German post offices an enormous
service and have enormous and historical importance to German post
history. They are tempting to any stamps collector.
Some types meet, in several colours and with legends and varied overprints
that tell us innumerable facts of historical relevance.
