SEMM3023 Applied Numerical Methods Semester 1 Session 2018/2019

Project 2: Curve Fitting, Interpolation and Numerical Integration

Deadline: 6 January 2019

(This is NOT a group project. While discussion with other students is encouraged, all work
submitted for credit, however, MUST BE YOUR OWN. Any evidence of plagiarism will be
grounds for a FAILING GRADE in the course.)

As the mechanical engineer, you are required to operate a CNC machine to manufacture the
blade of turbine as shown in Figure 1. If the blade is designed using the standard series data
as shown in the Table 1, you are requested to:
1) Identify the coordinate of the blade cross section area in the step size of 0.5 in x-axis
so that the machine able to form the smooth surface of the blade.
2) Estimate the mass of the blade if it is made by copper. Assume that the length of the
blade is 1 meter and the blade has uniform cross section area.

Hints:

Since the data collected is no in similar spacing, curve fitting or numerical interpolation
method is needed to estimate the data in equal spacing. After that, numerical integration
method can be applied to obtain the total cross section area of the blade before multiply with
the length to get the total volume and mass of blade.

Report
(a) Solution to this project must be presented in the standard technical report format.
Discussion, verification of program and derivation of the method used, including
algorithm, pseudocode, flowchart and MATLAB code, in solving the problem must
be included in the report.

(b) Reports are expected to be type-written and save in word file & PDF file on A4-
sized papers.

(c) Source codes of the computer programs developed for the project and report must
also be handed in through file submission in E-Learning under PROJECT 2
activity. No mark will be given if the program source code is not submitted.
