Q2. Find 𝜕𝑥 , 𝜕𝑦
of 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 − 1 = 0 using two different methods. Which method is better? Why?

Q3. If 𝑟 = 5.0 cm and ℎ = 12.0 cm, Find the maximum percentage error in calculating

𝑉(𝑟, ℎ) = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ.
within 1.0 mm error for measuring 𝑟 and ℎ.

Q4. A cone of radius 𝑟 = 5 cm and height ℎ = 10 cm is pushed from above. The height decreases
while the radius increases. If the height decreased by 3mm while the radius increased by only 2 mm.
Find:
(a) Show the process graphically.
(b) The original volume.
(c) The volume after the cone is pressured.
(d) The absolute change in the volume.
(e) The relative change in the volume.
(f) The ratio of the change in the height to the change in the radius.
(g) Which variation is greater?
Q5. A rectangular plate of 20 cm length and 10 cm width is fabricated using a machining tool which
has accuracy of 0.1 (10%) to the nearest centimetre.
(a) If this plate has to mounted in a rectangular area of exactly 202.5 cm2, will it fit?
(b) If the answer is no, discuss only without a solution the strategy to allocate a new machining
tool?
Q6. Use differentials to estimate the change in the volume of the gas if its pressure is decreased from
5 atm to 4.9 atm and its temperature is decreased from 300 K to 280 K using the formula 𝑝𝑉 = 82𝑇.
What is the absolute change? What is the relative change?

Q7. A metal cube is constructed such that its edge length should be 100 mm. If each of the cube sides
may be in error by as much as a millimetre. Use differentials to estimate the maximum resulting error
in calculating the volume.
Draw a diagram showing the change in the volume.
Which volume could be accepted and which one could be rejected?
