III LO im.

Bohaterów Westerplatte
- School of the best opportunities.
It is also named “Topolówka,”
because it is located in “Topolowa”
street, where we can see many
poplar trees. In Polish language
“poplar”means”topola”
History

• In the beginning, III LO, so-called „Topolówka,” was

founded in 1909 in Gdansk, which was, at this time,
under German occupation. In the first year, there were
only 137 students, all of them were boys, no girls were
allowed to learn in „Topolówka”.
• During the First World War, many students and
professors were called to take part in battles. The
truth is that the school was still educating new
students, but a number of students was not very
satisfying. In 1918 there were only 9 students who
wanted to take a Matura exam.
• In 1918, the war finally ended, Gdansk became a free
city. But this school was still until the German
Education Department. Poland finally took over
„Topolówka” in 1945, after the Second World War.
The scholars of the III High School in
Gdansk had been oppressed many times by
the communists. Students were fighting for
the free Republic of Poland, they opposed
the Soviet’s repressions. Inside the school
society there were many organizations
acting against communist's authority,
taking actions such as issuing school
bulletins. In 1970-1989, students were

independence and full autonomy.
Gdańsk

Gdańsk is one of the biggest cities in Poland. It is

known as a „free city”. This is the city where a
war with communists started.
Gdańsk is very old, it is over 1000 years! It was
established in 997 by Polish people, but most of
the time, Gdańsk was under German control.

Politics Club
• It is known, that politics is a very
important part of our social life.
Politicians have a huge impact on our
lives, they decide, on our behalf off
course of course, about crucial
issues. In „Topolówka” we are aware
of that. We have a discussion club
about politics. We run many, long and
interesting debates. What is the most
important, we learn how to discuss
with people who have different
opinions.
„Do not fight using the sword, try to
achieve the same effect with words”.
Let’s communicate and talk about
bullying at schools together since it is
the problem, which is very common in
our everyday reality. The Erasmus+
project is to help prevent our societies
from such negative and hurtful
behaviors.
How are these techniques taught in our
school?
In our school, we have some
classes and lectures about
communication and mediation
that teach us how to solve
problems and disagree without
hurting anyone
The main goal is the prevention
from physical violence and
emotional abuse. As a result of
these classes, everyone in school
knows that the worst ’school
crime’ you can commit is picking
on somebody.
Pedagogue and
psychologists

• In our school, there are pedagogues and

psychologists who are helpful for the
students. If we have a problem, we can
always visit them and talk about our
issues. Sometimes you just need to talk
to somebody.
We look forward to meeting you, here in Gdansk, in Poland, to talk
about significant problems and issues important for all of us in the
At the end European Union and in the great European society. III High school is
a good place to communicate and have a great time together.
