Site Support Supervisor: Amanda Hatcher USP: Jim Lee
Subject: Social Science Grade: 8th
Lesson Topic: Dread Scott

Lesson Purpose/Objective:
8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the
ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
8.9.5. Analyze the significance of the States’ Rights Doctrine, the Missouri Compromise
(1820), the Wilmot Proviso (1846), and the Compromise of 1850, Henry Clay’s role in
the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act
(1854), the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision (1857), and the Lincoln-Douglas debates
(1858).

Lesson Objective: Students will analyze the case of Dred Scott versus Irene Emerson by
means of re-enactment and deliberation.

Domain A – Organization and Preparation

1) The lesson will start with a selection of roles, seating arrangements, and procedures
for the re-enactment. A script will then be passed out.

2) Students will open the reenactment with a basic description of the setting and
participants in Scene I.

3) Scene II will be a reenactment of the courtroom proceedings.

4) After each side makes its case, students who are members of the juror group will
reach a verdict by deliberation.

5) Scene III will be a final wrap up by the participants and the narrator will describe the
significance of the Dred Scott case, which will be a review for them.

6) Students will blog about how their character, which each student already has, would
respond to the Dred Scott case. They will also respond to other student’s blogs in
character. The characters have been randomly passed out to students and are in many
cases real people from different backgrounds and localities in the U.S.

Domain B - Assessment
Pre-assessment: Pre-assessment of student understanding of Dred Scott will occur
during a lesson that occurred a few days earlier.

Progress Monitoring: Progress monitoring will occur while students are reenacting the
case, esp. during jury deliberations. Additional scaffolding and modeling will be provided
as required.
Formative Assessment: Students will be assessed on their Padlet “blog”.

Summative assessment: Students will be summatively assessed by their test that will be
at the end of the unit.

Domain C – Engagement (list relevant instructional strategies)

 Cooperative learning – Students will be working together during discussions and
on Padlet to learn about the material.
 Scaffolding – students and groups who are struggling will be provided additional
instruction to enable them to succeed.
 Providing opportunities for student practice – Students will now have had a 3rd
time to practice their blogging and responses. Their responses and ability to
respond has been growing.
 Student Discovery – Students need to discover how their characters would feel
about the case.
 Technology – Students will be working with chrome books and Padlet to create a
blog for their character.

Domain D - Planning
I have consulted with my SST to determine an appropriate lesson that fits with current
unit schedule.

Domain E – Classroom Management and Learning Environment

The students will be coming into class at second period My goal will be begin the activity
quickly to maximize the time at the end for their blogs. Roll will be done by my SST (I do
not have access to computerized attendance).

I will then explain the day’s activity to the students and model what is expected during
the learning activity.

Students will take their positions at appropriate locations during the reenactment. All
students will have a role during the reenactment.

Students should be respectful of other’s that are talking during classroom reenactments
and discussion. They will refrain from interrupting other students.

My SST has set classroom decorum and students are encouraged to work with one
another to complete tasks when appropriate.

Domain F – Professional

I will provide a supportive environment that allows students the opportunity to work
together in an enjoyable, productive, collaborative environment. For those students who
struggle to focus on their task, I will provide them with redirection and positive
reinforcement so that they can succeed at their tasks and assignments. I will also set a
professional tone that has high expectations for my students and appropriate classroom
behavior.
