Pushkara Nakshtra

- January 19, 2015

When the nakshatra mandala (nakshatra zodiac) is mapped to the rasi mandala (rasi
zodiac), while certain nakshtras are fully mapped within the boundaries of a rasi sign,
there are some which crosses over to different rasi signs. For instance nakshatras
such as Ashwini and Bharani are contained within the boundaries of Aries while
Krittika's one pada (quarter) in Aries and another 3 padas are in Taurus.

Such nakshatras, part of which falls in two signs behaves like bridging nakshatras
between the signs. Considering the 4 padas of the nakshatra are 4 petals (of lotus),
for such nakshatras one or two padas fall in one sign and the remaining fall in the
another sign. They are called the pushkara nakshatras as the fall the bridge between
two signs for movement of energies.

For the nakshatras of Sun viz., Krittika, U.Phalguni and U.Ashadha, one petals fall in
the preceding sign and 3 petals fall in the succeeding sign. Similaly for Jupiter's
nakshatras viz., Punarvasu, Vishakha and P.Bhadra 3 petals fall in the preceding
sign and 1 petal fall in the succeeding sign. They are called tripushkara nakshatras
as 3 of their petals fall in one sign. For Mars's nakshatra however, viz., Mrigashira,
Chitra and Dhanistha, the petals are equally divided into 2 signs and hence they are
called Dvipushkara nakshatra.

It is noteworthy that no bridge exist between the signs on the two sides of Gandanta
viz., Pisces-Aries, Cancer-Leo and Scorpio-Sagittarius.Hence there are no energy
transfer between those signs, hence planets placed in the last nakshatra pada of
watery sign and the first nakshatra pada of the fiery sign suffer destruction
(starvation) due to lack of resources. It is known that the houses whose lords are
placed in the mentioned padas suffer heavily.

The Dvipushkara nakshatras and the tripushkara nahshatras i.e., that nakshatras of
Mars, Sun and Jupiter offer a delicate balance in the horoscope. The planets placed
in those nakshatras have special significance both in Natal and the electional charts.
Functional benefics placed in those nakshatras confer outstanding results while
functional malefic confer terrible results.

The means by which the results are attained will be based on the nature of the
planets: natural benefics will undertake benevolent means, natural malefics will
undertake malevolent means. Thus when natural malefics become functional
benefics, the native will gain from evil means or after some mishap signified by the
malefic planets.

There are panchanga yogas based on this principle while causes an event to occur
twice (dvipushkara) or thrice (tripushkara).

Mundane Astrology
- March 02, 2008
The principle of astrology can not only be applied to horoscopes of living being such
as humans and animals but also anything else in this world such as nations,
institutions, organisations, associations etc. We should appreciate the fact that
everything in this world is only temporary, it can be marked by a specific time when it
came into existence and there would also be a time when it will cease to exist. In this
world of maya numerous things are created and destroyed every momenet and all
such things can be analysed using astrological principles. This can be done because
essentially everything in this manifested universe can be mapped to 12 signs and 9
planets based on the underlying forces of 5 elements. One should note however that
the signs represent the immobile aspect whereas the planets represents the mobile
(living) aspects of the things under consideration.

The mentioned things can be analysed by creating a horoscope at the moment of

commencement of the thing. For instance, the nation's events can be prognosicated
using horoscope casted at the moment of independence, while the election of
leaders etc. can be seen from the horoscope casted at the moment of
commencement of the constitution which gives the authority to elect rulers. Thus one
must understand the chart needs to be seen based on the nature of events to be
studied from it. Although the astroligical classics gives the framework for analysing
mundane horoscopes, one must have considerable experience in natal horoscopy
before venturing into mundane charts.

Like all events in the natal horoscopy be associated with the 12 houses of the
zodiac, similarly in the mundane horoscopy there are associations of various things
with vaarious houses. If one studies them carefully they can see the strong parallel
between the associations in natal and mundane horoscopy. For instance, in the natal
horoscope 2nd house is the house of wealth; similarly, in the mundance horoscopey
2nd house governs over the revenue of the state/ organisation, finance and
commerce. The things represented by various houses in the mundane astrology is
given below:

1st house: 1st house is the house of self and governs over the personality of the
native as well as overall strength and weaknesses. Thus in the mundane horoscopy
it govens general affairs of the state, the constitution, public health and well being,
state policies as well as the condition of the cabinet.

2nd house: 2nd house is the house of family and wealth. In mundane astrology it
governs over revenue and wealth of the state and people, imports, taxation and
other means earning revenue. It also rules over allies being the house ruling family.

3rd house: 3rd house is the house of siblings, communications and courage. Thus
in mundane horoscopy, it rules over various modes of communications such as
internet, telephone, postal, newspapers and all ways of transportation such as land,
sea and air transport. Since it rules over siblings, it also governs over relations with
the neighbouring nations.

4th house: 4th house is the house of happiness, education, landed property and
vehicles. In mundane astrology, it governs over all educational institutions such as
schools, colleges, universities, general conditions of education, the conditions of
teaching and students. It also governs over general happiness and peace and also
land assets and properties. It also rules over agriculture and agro based industries.

5th house: 5th house is the house of love, subconcious mind (mental harmony),
creation, progeny and power. In mundane astrology, it governs over the mentality of
the rulers, birth rate and population, crime and punishment, entertainment and
amusement.

6th house: 6th house is the house of loans, diseases and enemies. Thus in
mundane astrology, it governs over state loans and debts, diseases of the rulers and
people, friendship and enmity with people within and other states, territorial attacks
and battles, armed, air and naval forces and other means of war such as arms and
ammunitions.

7th house: 7th house is the house of relationship and marriage. In mundane
astrology, this house governs health of women (creative force), morality or
immorality in terms of sexual relationships and foreign relations. Being the house
opposite to the lagna, it also governs over war.

8th house: 8th house is the house of defects and death. In mundane astrology, it
govenrs over the death rate, guarantees and insurances.

9th house: 9th house is the house of righteous deeds, religiousity and guidance
from the elders. In mundane astrology, it governs over all religious shrines such as
temples, churches, mosques etc. as well as general religiousness or irreligiousness.
It also governs over all such people who guide general public such as priests,
astrologers and preachers and also the whole judicial system such as court, judges,
lawers and the law of the land.

10th house: 10th house is the house of activities and authority. In the mundane
astrology, this house governs over the rulers or head of the state, the parliament or
the constitutional body governing the state's public policy, the kind of authority of the
ruler such as autocracy, democracy etc. This also rules over the activities of the
state such as machinary to collect taxes and revenues, the machinary to implement
and monitor public policy such as bereucracy, police etc. This also governs over
other activities such as trade and commerce, exports etc. Change of ruler through
elections, coup or revolutions can also be seen from this house.

11th house: 11th house is the house of gain and friends. Thus in mundane
astrology, this include various forms of gains and income from world trade and also
friendly ties with other nations.

12th house: 12th house is the house of losses, secret enemies and hospitals. Thus
in mundane astrology it governs over all forms of secret things such as espionage,
secret service, conspiracies and secret plots, secret crimes. This also governs
hospitals, clinics and any other forms of medical institutions (such as healing, yoga
etc), public health administration such as vaccination, various forms of medical
approaches such as homeopathy, allopathy, ayurveda, yoga and alternate medicines
(naturopathy, accupuncture, accupressure etc). Being the house of loss it governs
over various forms of losses (such as war and other forms of natural and man-made
disasters), expenditure and donations (such as charitable donations to needy
nations).

Death causing Transits

- February 03, 2008
Saturn's Transits

1. When Saturn Passes through the house occupied by the 8th or the 12th lord
from the lagna, Death occurs. Passage of Saturn through these houses or
their trines reckoned from any other house result in destruction of that house.
2. Saturn’s transit of the sign or the trine occupied by the lord of the 22nd
Decanate or Mandi brings about death.
3. When Saturn passes through the rasi and navamsa or their trine obtained
from subtracting the longitude of Saturn from that of Mandi, Death is likely.
4. Saturn’s transit through the sign or the trine obtained from the sum of
longitudes of 6th, 8th and 12th lords brings death.
5. Saturn’s transit of the sign as far removed from Mandi as Mandi is from the
8th lord is also a fateful transit.
6. Add the longitudes of the five upagrahas headed by Dhuma, and note the
Decanate of the resulting sign. When Saturn arrives this decanate of the sign,
the death is indicated.
7. Add the longitudes of Mandi and Saturn. Multiply the sum by 9. Note the
resulting sign and Navamsa. When Saturn arrives this sign and amsa, the
event may take place.
8. Find the weakest of the three sets of planets, viz.(1) Lords of the 8th houses
counted from the Lagna and the Moon (2) Lord of the 22nd decanate (3) The
Moon and Mandi. Note the Navamsa occupied by that planet. When Saturn
arrives at this amsa or its trine, death is likely.
9. Note the sign which happens to be the Navamsa occupied by the lord of the
Lagna See how far it is removed from Aries; count so many signs from the 8th
lord. When Saturn comes to this sign, death is likely.
10. For the Night birth death is likely during the transit of Saturn through a trine of
the sign occupied by Mandi at birth; and for day birth it is 7th house from
above.
11. Again for the Night birth the event may occur when Saturn passes through the
sign and Amsa occupied by the Moon or Mandi; and for Day birth, when she
passes through the sign and Amsa occupied by the Sun or the 5th, 7th or 9th
from that.

Jupiter's Transit

1. Jupiter’s transit through the sign occupied by the 8th lord or its trine.
2. Jupiter’s transit through the sign or the trine obtained from the sum of
longitudes of Lagna, the Sun and Mandi causes death.
3. When Jupiter crosses the rasi indicated by the sum of the longitudes of
Jupiter and Rahu or through its trines, death can be expected.

Sun's Transit

1. When the Sun comes to the sign and the amsa obtained from sum of the the
longitudes of Mandi and the Lagna, death may happen.
2. When Sun transits the dwadasamsa he occupies in Rasi or the Navamsa
occupied by the 8th lord or the Navamsa occupied by Lagna lord or the Trines
of any one of these signs, death may be apprehended.
3. Passage of Sun through the 6th, the7th or the12th house from Venus indicate
death.
4. The solar month of death would be identical with the sign occupied by the 8th
lord.

Moon's Transit
1. When the Moon crosses the Rasi or Navamsa by the 8th lord or the Sun or
their trines, death is likely.
2. Moon’s passage through the sign indicated by the sum of Mandi and Moon.
3. Moon’s passage through the sign occupied by the lord of 22nd decanate
reckoned from the Moon or through the trines of these houses.
4. Transit of the Moon through the Lagna, the 8th or the 12th house also cause
death.

Other Transits

1. Find out the Navamsa, Dwadasamsa and the Decanate occupied by Mandi.
The transit of Jupiter through the sign indicated by the Navamsa; of Saturn
through that of dwadasamsa and the Sun through the one or its trine indicated
by the Decanate indicates death. The lagna denoted by the Sum of the
Lagna, the Moon and the Mandi indicates the time of Death.
2. The Lagna at the time of death will be the sign obtained from the sum of the
longitudes fo the Lagna, Mandi and the Moon.

Comments

Maraka Grahas
- September 03, 2006

In Chapter 44 of BPHS Parasara says, O Brahmin! Third and Eighth Bhava are the
two Bhavas of longevity. The Bhavas, related to death, are the 12th from each of
these, i.e. Dhana and Yuvati Bhava are Maraka Bhavas. (BPHS 2-5)

Out of the two maraka bhavas, Dhana Bhava is a powerful Maraka Bhava. Along
with it the following are also considered to be Marakas

 The Lords of Dhana and Yuvati Bhava

 Malefics in Dhana and Yuvati Bhava
 Malefics conjoined with Dhana and Yuvati bhava’s Lords (BPHS 44.3)

The major and sub-periods of these Grahas will bring death on the native, depending
on whether he is a long life, medium life, or short life person.

The Dasha of a benefic Graha, related to twelfth lord may also inflict death.

End may descend on the native in Eighth Lord’s Dasha.

The Dasha of a Graha, which is an exclusive malefic, may also cause death (BPHS
44.6 - 44.7)

Predominant Killer
If Saturn is ill-disposed and be related to a Maraka Graha (as mentioned above), he
will be the first to kill in preference to other Grahas. (BPHS 44.9)

There are three kinds of life-spans, viz. short, medium and long. Short life is before
32 years, later on up to 64 it is medium life and from 64 to 100 it is long life. Beyond
100 the longevity is called Purnayu (10-14). Persons falling into these three
compartments shall die in specific constellations based on the Navatara shceme of
classification of the Nakshatras into three groups. According to Pt. Sanjay Rath, if
the Janma Nakshatra is stronger to initiate the vimshottari dasa, then the Navatara
chakra is initiated from the Lagna Nakshatra and vice-versa.

 One born with short life combinations may face death in the Dasha, denoted
by Vipat star (3rd from the birth star)
 One of medium life may die in the Dasha, denoted by Pratyak star (5th from
the birth star).
 In the Dasha, denoted by Vadha star (7th from the birth star), one with long
life may obtain his end.

Longevity Calculation prohibited by Parasara before the native attains 20 years of

Age. He says to Maitreya, O excellent of the Brahmin! It is impossible to decide upon
longevity till the native is 20 years old. Till such year the child should be protected by
sacred recitations, religious offerings (of Ghee etc.) to consecrated fire, as
prescribed in the Vedas and scriptures and through medical treatments; premature
death may descend on the child due to sins of father and mother, or of his/her own
(in the previous birth).

 The Dasha of the Lord of the 22nd Decanate, or 23rd, or 3rd, or 5th, or 7th
asterisms may also cause death.

 The Lords of the 2nd and the 12th i.e., Sun and Mercury, counted from Cancer,
may also bring death. This is true, when the Moon is a malefic. If he happens
to be a benefic, there will be diseases (not death).

 Death may come to pass in the Dasha of Sixth lord and in the sub-periods of
Sixth, Eighth and/or Twelfth Lords.

Death Vs. Miseries

Should there be many Marakas and, if these Marakas are strong, there will be
diseases, miseries etc. in major and sub-periods. Thus these are Marakas and are
primarily related to bring death upon the native. According to their dispositions there
may be death, or difficulties.

Rahu and Ketu, as Marakas.

 If Rahu, or Ketu are placed in Lagna, Seventh, Eighth, or Twelfth Bhava, or

happen to be in the 7th from a Marak Lord, or are placed with such a Grah,
they acquire powers of killing in their major, or sub-periods.

 For one born in Makar, or in Vrischik, Rahu will be a Marak. For Capricorn,
Rahu becomes the 2nd lord and for Vrishchika, it becomes the 4th lord.

 Should Rahu be in Sixth, Eighth, or Twelfth Bhava, he will give difficulties in

his Dasha periods. He will not, however, do so, if Rahu receives a Drishti
from, or is yuti with a benefic. (This is true for all the planets, who when
aspected by benefics give beneficial results and tone down their malefic
results.)

Third house and cause of Death.

 If Surya, being with strength, is in third house, one will obtain his death, due to
a king (legal punishments).
 Chandra in third house will cause death, due to tuberculosis.
 Wounds, weapons, fire and thirst will cause death through Mangal in third
house.
 If third house receives a Drishti from, or is occupied by Śani and Rahu, death
will be through poison, water, or fire, or fall from heights, or confinement.
 Death will surely come through insects, or leprosy, if Chandr and Gulika
occupy, or give a Drishti to third house.
 Budha, giving a Drishti to, or occupying third house, will bring death, followed
by fever.
 Guru in or giving a Drishti to third house, will cause death by swelling, or
tumours.
 Urinary diseases will cause death, if Shukr is in, or gives a Drishti to third
house.
 Many Grahas, giving a Drishti to, or occupying third house, will bring death
through many diseases.

Note: In the upadesha sutras of Maharishi Jaimini it is mentioned that cause of

death can be seen from the 3rd and 8th from Arudha Lagna.

Place of Death

If Sahaj Bhava is occupied by a benefic, death will be in an auspicious place (like a

shrine) and, if Sahaj Bhava is occupied by a malefic, death will be in sinful places.
Mixed occupation of Sahaj Bhava will yield mixed results with regard to the place of
death.

Consciousness will prevail at the time of death, if Jupiter, or Venus are placed in
Third Bhava. With other Grahas in Sahaj Bhava there will be unconsciousness
before death.

Distance of Place of Death from home:

According to third house being a Movable, a Fixed, or a Dual Rāśi, death will be,
respectively, in a foreign place (other than native birth place), in one’s own house, or
on the way.

Note: The third house can be seen from the Arudha lagna instead of Lagna, as
suggested by Maharishi Jaimini.

Eighth Bhava and Nature of Death

Various planets occupying the 8th house from Lagna shows death by various
means.

 If it is Surya, death will be through fire.

 if Chandr is in Randhr Bhava, through water.
 if Mangal, through weapons.
 if Budh, through fever.
 if Guru, through diseases
 if Venus, through hunger.
 if Saturn, through thirst.
If eighth house is occupied by, or receives a Drishti from a benefic, while ninth lord is
conjoined with a benefic, the native will die in a shrine. If eighth house is occupied
by, or aspected by a malefic, while ninth lord is conjoined death will be in a place,
other than a shrine.

Astakavarga: A snapshot
- January 08, 2005
The following section provides methods to judge a horoscope with the help of
Astakavarga. These are taken from Immortal Classic Prasna Margam and give vital
clues to judge the horoscope of a native with a holistic view. I am sure the readers
would not find it difficult to understand as they are pretty clear and concise.

In the sarvastakavarga, signs having more than 30 bindus can be said to be the best
(srestha); those getting between 25 and 30 - middling (madyama) and those below
25- worst (kasta). The best sign should be selected for all good work, journey etc.
worst sign should be avoided. Person born in best signs can be taken for
association. They will bring in good. Persons born in worst sign will be source of
distress.

Judging Volume of Income and Expenditure

1. The sum total of the bindus in the 2nd, 4th, 9th, 10th and 11th is known as Vittya.
If the total exceeds 164, the native will be prosperous, otherwise his expenses would
be high. If the value exactly equals 164, then the expenses would equal to the
income.

2. The sum total of bindus in the 6th, 8th and the 12th houses is known as Teertha. If
is is less than 76, income will be greater. However, if it exceeds 76, expenses would
be greater. If it is 76, expenses would equal to the income.

Minimum number of Bindus requires for prosperity of a Bhava

In the sarvastakavarga, the minimum number of bindus required are:
Lagna: 25; 2nd: 22; 3rd: 29; 4th: 24; 5th: 25; 6th: 34; 7th: 19; 8th: 24; 9th: 29; 10th:
36; 11th: 54; 12th: 16

If the number of bindus exceed the number mentioned above the bhava is
strenthened. It is desired that the number in the good bhavas namely Lagna, 2nd,
3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th should be more than the number mentioned
whereas the number in the 6th, 8th or 12th should be lesser to be free from
enmity/diseases/accidents etc; weaknesses/ debt etc and excessive expenses
respectively.

For a bhava to be really fruitful, the bhava must be aspected/ associated by the lord
and/ or the karaka and/or the benefics. Along with this subhakartari yoga and
placement of benefics in the kendra or kona from the bhava is also fruitful.

Judging Paternal Wealth

4th house is very important for Paternal wealth as it is the 8th house of inheritence
from the house of father, namely the ninth house. This house along with the house of
wealth, the second house, should have secured more than the minimum number of
bindus for the native to be benefitted from paternal inheritence. Along with good
bindus, the houses should not be afflicted by malefics and be fortified by benefics.

Judging Self-earned wealth

10th house is the house of activity and fame, whereas the 11th is the house of gain
of objectives as well as money. If the 10th house is fortified with good bindus (more
than minimum stated) and influence of benefics, then the person earns vast wealth
with self exertion. Similarly when 11th house is so fortified, then the native earns
wealth commensurating the effort or even more.

Judging volume of Income and Expenditure

If the bindus in the 11th are greater than those in the 12th house, one will become
wealthy; if they are less, then he will be poor. If the bindus in the 11th are more than
the 10th, the native gains commensurating his effort, if not, then it would be lesser
than the effort put in.

Friends and Foes

The sum of bindus of the four trines (dharma, artha, kama, moksha) go by a specific
name, the relationship between these set of houses give some vital clues on
different areas of life. The specific set of houses are as follows

Bandhuka: Sum of bindus of Lagna, 5th and 9th (Dharma Trikona). Bandhuka is
derived from the word, bandhu, which means friends.
Sevaka: Sum of bindus of 2nd, 6th and 10th (Artha Trikona). Sevaka means
servants or the attitude to serve others.
Poshaka: Sum of bindus of 3rd, 7th and 11th (Kama Trikona). Poshaka means the
sustainer.
Ghataka: Sum of bindus of 4th, 8th and 12th (Moksha Trikona). Ghataka means one
who causes affliction.
If the Ghataka number is highest, the native would be miserably poor. However, if it
is less than Poshaka, then he would be wealthy. If the Bandhuka number is high,
then the native will get help from friends, relatives, kith and kins. Similarly, if sevaka
is high, then the person benefits from service or serving others. Thus the order of the
four entities should be

Poshaka > Bandhuka > Sevaka > Ghakata

Judging Three Parts of Life

Method 1:
First Part: Sum of bindus of signs from Pisces to Gemini
Second Part: Sum of bindus of signs from Cancer to Libra
Last Part: Sum of bindus of signs from Scorpio to Aquarius

The part of life marked by highest bindus indicate period of happiness and
prosperity. On the contrary, the past having least number of bindus is marked by
misery and diseases.

Method 2:
The Kendra, Panaphara and Apoklima rules the three parts of life namely the first,
second and the last part. The sum total of bindus in these houses shall show
prosperity in the concerned part of life.

Judging Materialistic and Spiritualistic Nature

Everyone in this world can broadly categorised into two categories, one who are
driven towards material pursuits of wealth, power, pride etc and the others who are
directed towards simple living, introspection, philanthropy and charity. This can be
indicated by two sets of houses called the antarbhaga, which represent the
spiritualistic kind and the bahirbhaga, which represent the materialistic kind.

Antarbhaga: Sum of bindus of kona (5/9), Kendra (1/4/7/10)

Bahirbhaga: Sum of bindus other than the kona and the kendras (2/3/6/8/11/12)
Judging Years of Misfortune

Find the total the bindus from-

The Ascendant to Saturn
Saturn to the Ascendant
The Ascendant to Mars
Mars to the Ascendant

In each case multiply the sum by 7 and divide the product by 27. The quotient will
indicate the age when the native will be afflicted by diseases and other misfortunes.

In the year represented by the bindus in the unfavourable house occupied by Rahu,
the native will be affected by poison. Similarly the age shown by Mars will witness
surgical operation, and the age shown by Saturn will indicate diseases and miseries.
Thus if a house is afflicted by malefic in the horoscope, the effect of such affliction
would be shown in the life of a person in the year shown by the sign, where the
planet causing affliction is placed.

Pointers to Mantra Bhava

- September 19, 2004

1. Jupiter is the karaka for the mantra bhava. Ninth from the Jupiter brings Guru in
the one’s life.

The Guru in one’s life is represented by the chara bhratrkaraka. What way the native
associates with the guru can be seen from the chara bhratrkaraka in the rasi chart.

2. When benefics are placed in the fifth house the person is wise and principled. He
is inclined towards Japa or Meditation and is spiritual and well behaved.

3. A strong fifth lord in conjunction with Jupiter or Mercury placed in a trine or a

Kendra endows the native with Intelligence or wisdom.Mercury or Jupiter’s
association with fifth house makes a person a scholar and an author.

4. Preponderance of masculinity on fifth house or lord gives the desire to worship a

male deity. The masculinity can be indicated by 1) Odd sign and 2) Male planet
(Sun, Mars and Jupiter).

5. Association (conjunction, aspect, exchange) of malefic planets (Saturn, Mars and

Rahu) the malefic is pulled towards kshudra devata, spirits and departed souls.
However, if there are influences of benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon and also
Sun) on the fifth house/ lord, the native likes to worship Sattvik devatas and has a
nature that of a sadhu.

6. When the lord of the fourth house is in fifth, the native would be a devotee of
Vishnu (Jataka Parijata, JT, BPHS).

7. When the fifth lord is associated with Mercury, the native worships Mahavishnu.

8. When the twelfth lord in second or eighth house and is related to fifth lord then the
native is devoted towards Sattvik deities.

9. When the fifth lord is in Leo and aspected by Sun, then the native will meditate
upon Panchakshari mantra and attain blessings of Shiva (Suka Nadi).

10. If Moon is in fifth house and fifth lord is with Mars, the native worships Kartikeya.

11. If Jupiter is in fifth house and the fifth lord is in Virgo, the native becomes a
worshipper of mata Gouri.

12. When the fifth lord is placed in the seventh house, the native becomes arva
dharma samanvita and respects all religion.

13. When the eleventh lord is in fifth house, the native is religious.

14. When the twelfth lord is in fifth native visit shrines to get a child.
15. The deities governed by different planets are Sun- Shiva; Moon- Gouri; Mars-
Skanda; Mercury- Vishnu; Jupiter- Sadashiva, Mahavishnu; Venus- Lakshmi; Saturn-
Narayana; Rahu- Durga; Ketu- Ganesha. If there are influences of these planets on
the 5th house or the fifth lord, then the native would be attracted towards worship of
the deity signified by different planets.

Decanate & Body Parts

- July 28, 2004
1. Introduction
This is a matter to wonder, why there are moles on certain parts and why certain
parts of the body is more susceptible to cuts and bruises than other parts. However,
this is not all, why should we know the influence of planets on different parts of the
body. This is a invariable part in medical astrology and can be used to track which
planet is influencing the body parts under trouble. Jyotish is a beautiful too to
uncover, even those things which are covered in the eyes of a seasoned medical
practitioner. This makes us appreciate the association of the cosmos with all of us in
this world, whether perceptible or imperceptible to our senses. We are ad midst of
the play of the cosmic drama and we are the player. The director is none other than
the supreme consciousness, for whom the principle of operation of a universe and a
cell inside human body are the same. Alas! We do not realize it with our limited
senses. However, we can infer, from whatever we can sense, that there is an
invisible reality, which is truer than what we assume to be true in this material plane
of existence based on our senses.

2. What Classics Say?

Decanates and Bodily Limbs. Head, eyes, ears, nose, temple, chin and face is the
order of limbs, denoted (by the various Bhavas), when the first decanate of a Rāśi
ascends. In the case of the second decanate ascending the order is neck, shoulder,
arm, side, heart, stomach and navel. The order for the third decanate ascending is
pelvis, anus/penis, testicles, thigh, knee, calf and foot. (BPHS 12.12-12.14)
Left/ Right Parts: The portion already risen indicates left side of the body (while the
one yet to rise, i.e. the invisible half, denotes the right side of the body). (BPHS
12.12-12.14)

Limbs Affected: The limb, related to a malefic by occupation, will have ulcers, or
scars, while the one, related to a benefic, will have a mark (like moles etc). So say
the Jyotishis. (BPHS 12.15)

Marks from Birth or later: Should these planets be in their own Rāśi, or Amsa at birth,
then the wound, or mole are right from birth. Otherwise these will be caused later on
(in appropriate periods). (Saravali 4.6)

3. Interpretation
The three decanates divide the body into three parts. In each sign the decanate
where Lagna is placed, would show some part of head (upper part: above the trunk),
the 2nd decanate (from that of Lagna Decanate) would show the organs of the
middle part (from neck to pelvis) and the 3rd decanate (from that of the Lagna) would
show the organs in the lower part (below the pelvis).

For illustration if the Lagna is rising in the 2nd decanate, then 2nd decanate of all the
signs shall show the part of the head, the 3rd decanate, shall show the parts of the
trunk and the 1st decanates of signs shall show the parts of the lower third.

The classification of the body parts are shown below:

* The body parts represented by Lagna and the 7th have both the right and the left
part. They are described below:

a. Lagna: The two side of the Lagna cusp represent two sides. From the beginning of
the Lagna sign (0deg) to the cusp falls in the visible half and shall represent the left
side of the body part and from the cusp to the end of the sign falls in the invisible half
and shall represent the right side of the body part.

b. 7th house: In the seventh house, the duration of beginning of the sign to the cusp
of the 7th (equal to Lagna cusp in equal house division) falls in in the invisible half
(already set in western horizon) and shall represent the right side of the body part
and from the cusp to the end, falls in the visible part (yet to set in western horizon)
represent the left side of the body part.

In the following illustration, Saturn is placed in the 7th house however is in the visible
half (cusp to end) of the 7th house and hence shall represent the left side of the body
part. Saturn is placed in the 3rd decanate of 7th, which represent foot (since Lagna
is in 1st decanate, the head is ruled by the 1st decanate, the torso by the 2nd
decanate and the part below the navel by the 3rd decanate). Thus the body part
influenced by Saturn is left foot.

Thus it is noteworthy that the visible part of the zodiac at the moment of birth (from
7th to 12th) show the left part of the body (controlled by right side of the brain), while
the invisible part of the zodiac (Lagna to 7th) shows the right side of the body
(controlled by the left side of the brain). Thus one should remember the association -
Visible- Left; Invisible - Right.

4. Illustration:
Maharishis say that the moles, warts, birth marks, wounds and sores etc can be
predicted from the placement of planets in different decanates. Lets see how it
works. In the following horoscope, the planets are placed in the following decanates:
The planets are placed in the following decanate:

The above mentioned body parts can have some moles or scars based on whether it
is occupied by benefics or malefics. I have for sure wound marks or scars in my left
knee where Mars is placed. I always used to think, why am I so susceptible to
wounds and bruises in my left knee when I was a naughty kid, whereas my right
knee is perfectly fine. Saturn is also not lesser in anyway in inflicting its pain and
marks in left foot.
Dhana Yogas: Combinations For
Wealth I
- July 20, 2004

INTRODUCTION

Maharishi Parashara in BPHS says that the Kendras are specifically the houses of
happiness and the Trikonas are the houses of Wealth and Prosperity. This is
because Kendras are ruled by Vishnu, the sustainer and Trikonas are governed by
Lakshmi, the giver of prosperity. Thus, these houses shall appear prominently in the
combinations of wealth. Along with it, 2nd house is the house of accumulated wealth
and 11th house is the house of gains or income and thus, these houses are equally
important in the matters of wealth. 12th signify the house of loss and its involvement
in the combinations show loss of wealth. Lets see what different classics have to say
in these matters of wealth:

Bhavartha Ratnakara

 If the there’s a parivartana between either the 2nd and 5th lords or the
2nd and 11th lords, the native earns a lot. This is also true for the
placement of the 5th and 9th lords in their own houses.

Here the author talks of the association of the lord of wealth (accumulated), i.e., 2nd
lord, with either the 5th house (Trine) or the 11th house (gains), the native earns a lot
of money. This to note here that while 9th house shows past, the 5th house shows
future. Since the author talks of involvement of the 5th lord, the native shall "Earn"
the wealth with his own effort and not inherit from his Father (lineage), as signified by
the 9th house. In the subsequent line, the author speaks of the strength of the 5th
and 9th houses, the key houses of blessings of Lakshmi.

 If the lords of 2nd and 11th are associated with lords of the 5th and 9th,
dhana yoga results.

Here the author, reiterates the same concept, just to give emphasis on the
association of the houses of wealth and gains with the houses representing the
blessings of Lakshmi. Various combinations can be possible by the association with
the 2nd and 11th lord with 5th and 9th house. However, in my humble opinion,
association of 2nd lord with 5th and 9th lords or houses are more important that 11th
lords association with the 5th and 9th lords (the houses are given lower priority), in
bestowing wealth to the native.

 If the said planets (2nd and 11th)are associated with lords other than the
5th and 9th, no dhana yoga results; however, the native does enjoy
moderate wealth.

This statement is particularly important, as this states that in the absence of any
dhana yoga, the person would not suffer penury and shall have riches based on the
inherent strength of the 2nd, 11th, 5th and 9th houses. The person shall have
moderate wealth and can make a comfortable living out of it as long as there is no
association of the houses of wealth with "BAD" houses (which we shall discuss in the
combinations for penury).

 There’ll be loss of wealth if the 12th lord associates with the 2nd and
11th lords.

12th is the house of losses and association of the 12th lord (vyayesha) with the lords
of the 2nd and 11th lords, shall cause loss of wealth. However, this cannot be
interpreted as lack of wealth. This can be interpreted as the native shall earn wealth
based on the association of the lords of the houses of wealth (2nd and 11th) with the
houses of blessings of lakshmi (5th and 9th) or their inherent strength, however, the
native has to face losses on unexpected ventures as indicated by the 12th house or
12th lord.

 It’s always fortunate for Jupiter to associate with the 2nd lord and
Mercury.

Here the author brings in the influence of the Karaka for wealth, Jupiter. It is known
that if the karaka of a house is well placed of associate with the lord of the house of
aspect the house, then that particular significations of the house is enhanced. If
Jupiter associate (conjunct, aspect, have exachange) with the 2nd lord (11th lord is
left out, as accumulated wealth is under focus), the native is fortunate and can have
good bank balance. Why Mercury is brought into picture is yet to be understood!
 If the 1st, 2nd and 11th lords are in their own houses, a dhana yoga is
formed

In the first stanza, the author talked of the stength of the 5th and 9th lords/ houses,
whereby here he talks of the strength of the trine which was left out, i.e., the Lagna
and the lord/ houses of wealth and gain. The purpose of seggregating these into two
different places can be priority which the author gives for the strength of the
combination to bestow wealth. In my humble opinion, the exaltation and other
strengths (sthana bala in shadbala scheme) of the said lords shall also noteworthy to
be studied in the context of Dhana Yogas.

 If the 2nd and 11th lords are in the lagna, a powerful dhana yoga results

While in previous stanzas, the author speaks of the association of the 2nd and 11th
lords with the trinal lords, namely 5th and 9th; in this stanza, he mentions the
placement of the lords of wealth and gain together in the Lagna can also bestow a
powerful dhanayoga. In my humble opinion, the combination can be extended to
placement of the 2nd and 11th lord in 5th and 9th too. If one of the two of the 2nd
and 11th lords are placed in the trine, then the combination is proportionately
weakened. The placement of 5th or 9th lord in the houses of wealth and income,
however has lesser consequences on the matters of wealth.

Snapshot Method of Interpreting a

Horoscope I
- June 28, 2004
INTRODUCTION
One of the biggest hurdle to any beginner in Jyotish that when a horosope is present
infront, one tend to get lost in the multitude of factors involved in analysing a
horosope. This cause frustration and devomotive one to study more and go deeper
into the discipline. This article tries to address the issue and provides a guideline on
how to go about analysing a horosope. This article is by no means comprehensive
as there is no substitute to hardwork and studying the Jyotisha-shastras in original.
However, I believe that this can give a good kick-start to any beginner in Jyotish.

1. The Nature of the person can be known by the planets placed in the Lagna and its
Trine and those who are aspecting it. These planets shall confer their naisargika
(natural)nature to the native. Purest quality of planets are exhibited when they are
exalted and when placed alone/ isolated, whenever they are conjoined with other
planets they undergo modification. Different planets signify different aspects of
personality.

2. The placements and conjunctions of planets show their impact on the nature of
the person. However functional nature of planets based on lordships can indicate the
situations and events that the native will be placed with.

3. Kendras are houses of Happiness. Natural malefics in these house shows that the
native's life shall be full of struggles and it consitute something known as Sarpa
yoga, when all the kendras are occupied by Malefics. If not all the kendras are
occupied, then also the yoga shall manifest partially. However under such
circumstances, if benefics placed in the lagna or the 7th or aspect the lagna, then the
yoga is brocken and such significations shown by the benefic shall bring bredth of
fresh air in the life of the native.

4. If the malefic planets placed in the Kendras are placed in the Own house or
exalation, this constitute the Mahapurusha yogas and the person shall have saintly
nature based on the tattva of the planet consituting the mahapurusha yogas.

5. If the malefic planets in the Kendras are placed in debilitation, the person enjoys
prosperity after periods of struggle.

6. Best place for malefics to be placed are the upachayas [3,6,10,11] among them
3,6,11 are the best positions.
But if malefics are placed in 6th house 4,8 and 12 (Sukha/happiness
trikona)unhappiness and misery. Specifically malefics placed in 4th gives
unhappiness at home or home country, in the 8th it will curtail longevity and in the
12th house it will have asubha yoga (inauspicious combination) wrt lagna and give
unwanted expenses in concurrence with the nature of the malefic.

7. Best place for benefics are kendras and trines. Benefics placed in the 6th, 8th and
12th house, do good to the significations of those houses but with the cost of
destroying their natural and functional significations.

STRENGTHS
1. Any house which is placed with benefics in kendra and trikona will prosper. The
house suffers if it is placed with malefics in kendra or trikona, provided they are not
the lord or karaka of the house concerned.

2. If lord of a house or karaka aspects (graha drishti or rashi drishti) the significations
of the house will prosper.

3. If natural benefic aspect a house, it then protects the house.

4. Protectors of a house are the Karaka and the lord. They shall always try to protect
the house and its significations. If they are strong, the protection is strong, however,
it they are afflicted (placed with enemies/ malefics) or weak (placed in debilitation/
marana sthana), they might fail to protect the house/ natural significations.

5. A house suffers if they are afflicted (placed with enemies/ malefics). If the lord is
afflicted, the karaka comes to the rescue and if the karaka is afflicted the lord comes
to rescue. If both are afflicted, none can rescue the sigifications. If the lord of any
house is placed witht he karaka for the house, the house prospers.

WEAKNESS
1. Any planet aspected by a malefic, who is not a friend is said to be afflicted. [Sun
and Mars do not afflict Jupiter]. Please note the natural friendship and enemity
among the planets to understand this.

2. Nodes (Rahu and Ketu) afflict every other planet. Nodes cause corruption of
natural significations, being a shadowy planet.

Rahu-Jupiter: Guru Chandala Yoga- The native is skeptical to any form of knowledge
and the guru. Also show manusya hatya (death/killing of human)
Rahu-Mars: Vijaya Yoga- Win using any means available
Rahu-Mercury: Causes perverted logic
Rahu-Sun: Aditya Chandala yoga- Lack of conscience/ dharma
Rahu-Moon: Shakthi yoga- Mentally unsettled

One must see where the yoga is happening and its association with the lagna/
atmakaraka for the native's involvement in the bad yogas.

3. Malefic Enemies in conjunction or 1/7th from each other cause trouble in the
house whether they are placed. For example following yogas are dangerous and
shall harm the house where they are placed.
Sun-Saturn
Mars-Saturn
Rahu-Sun
Rahu-Mars etc.

4. Planets defeated in planetary war (two planets placed very near are said to be in
war, a planet that loses longitude has lost the war) fails to protect, its signification
and also the significations of house owned by it suffers.

5. Planet in debiliation is weak to ptotect its house and significations. A planet in

Maran Karak Sthana (MKS) is weak and it fails to protect its house (s).

6. A planet who is combust is also weak. However, it is seen that the natural
significations of a combust planet is enhanced due to brilliance and energy of Sun,
however, the house owned by the planet suffers.

7. Debiliated planets weaken the house they are placed in and also the planets they
are placed with. This is because, debilitated planet is like a resourceless guy, trying
to gain from its environment.

8. Benefics and karakas placed in 2 or 12 the promote the house. Benefics either in
the 2nd or 12th cause Subha yoga, whereas in both the house cause subhakartari
yoga.

9. Fifth house is house of inner harmony (inner peace) 'chitta' in sat-chit-ananda. If

placed with saturn or rahu person becomes restless and cannot be at peace as they
are quite opposed to the karaka Jupiter. Badhakesh placed in fifth with affliction,
person becomes insane.

10. If there is conflict between planet placed in fifth and lagna the native suffers due
to restlessness.

11. Functional nature of any lord placed in 6,8, or 12 from lagna suffers because
enemies (6th) or weakness of past life (8th nija dosha) or past debts (12th) or if
those dusthana lords are placed in those houses. Badhakesh placed in any house,
that house may suffer due to black magic.

12. If a house lord is placed in a Dusthana from the house itself then the external
significations of the house suffers, such as the relatives ruled by the house etc.
However, if it placed in a dusthana from the lagna, then the native suffers wrt to the
house under consideration and the internal significations, such as dhana (2nd),
parakrama (3rd), happiness (4th), power/ authority (5th) etc., shall suffer. Thus for
example, if the 4th lord is in eighth and the karaka Moon is weak, then the person
would be concerned about something related to his mother, however the mother
might not suffer as the lord is placed in the 5th from 8th.

13. A house suffers if its lord is in rasi sandhi or Gandanta. Whenever a planet is
placed in the Rasi Sandhi, it becomes very weak to protect its houses. The duration
of rasi sandhi would be 1 nakshatra pada (3d 20m) each side of rasi junction. Among
the Sandhi, the three gandanthas (sandhi between Pisces-Aries; Cancer-Leo;
Scorpio-Sagittarius) are the most harmful.

14. The controller of sukha trikona is the 4th house [kendra houses control the
trikona]. If 4th house is afflicted the person faces misery. If 4th house is badly
afflicted, person can have suicidal tendencies. This is aggravated if the 5th house
from Moon is also afflicted (with malefics).
CAREFULLY JUDGE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF EACH HOUSE
AND THEIR KARAKA, THE AFFLICTIONS AND THE SALVAGING FACTORS &
THEN PRONOUNCE THE RESULTS, WHICH WOULD NOT GO WRONG. ALONG
WITH THIS GENERIC ANALYSIS, ONE NEED TO SEE THE NATURAL YOGAS
(GURU-MANGALA, SASI-CHANDRA etc.) AND THE FUNCTIONAL YOGAS
(DHARMA-KARMADHIPATI YOGA, DURYOGAS) ETC. TO DO A COMPLETE
ANALYSIS OF THE CHART.
