Reflection (Floods).

This is the sixth lesson of the Hend Alyammahi

Natural disasters’ unit. The
Lesson students have to learn the Student
unit/page causes of floods and their teacher
effects on the surrounding
area.
MST Mr. Joseph Townsend School RAK Academy PYP

Class Grade 4B Date November 9, 2018

Overall aim and context of the lesson

The students are supposed to test what type of soil can saturate more water. Then relate this to the
real life and what places are more likely to have floods.

Select (S):
Identify a lesson and what standards are you addressing
Lesson: Can I identify how floods are created and their effects?
Strand/ sub-strand: Earth and Space (how we organize ourselves?): Floods (Natural Disaster).
Describe (D):
Who is the lesson for? Grade 4B (mixed level class: 6 HA/ 5 LA/ 10 MA)
Where did the lesson take place? at the classroom.

What were you trying to achieve in your lesson?

In this lesson I tried to teach the students about flood as a natural disaster. The students must learn
the causes and effects of floods. Also, they had to identify what type of soil is more likely to cause
flood.

What did the students do?

The students had to experiment three types of soil and ad the same amount of water on each. This is
to identify what type of soil can saturate more water. Then, relate their finding to what places are
more likely to experiences a flood.
Analyze (A):
Why do you think the students responded the way that they did?
The students enjoyed the experiment where they had to so everything themselves. They thought that
filling the investigation sheet was a bit boring, but then they liked the rest of the experiment.
Moreover, linking the experiment to the causes and effects of floods was good to enhance their
learning.

How well did your teaching relate to the students’ prior understanding?
The students learned about different natural disaster before, so that was the main link to flood.
Moreover, they learned that hurricanes cause floods so that was another key in our lesson. The
students had to do the investigation sheet while conducting the experiment. Therefore, I tried to go
through the sheet step by step and model some on the board.

How well did you engage the students?

Providing real life materials and interesting experiment was very engaging to the students. I had to
emphasize on the importance of group work. Furthermore, talking about what countries or places are
more likely to experiences floods encourage the students to think and analyze their background
information.
Appraise (A):

Explain the nature of the experience from the students’ perspective

All the students liked the experiment and many of them knew interesting facts about floods. Although
they found the investigation sheet boring, but they found my modeling useful. Additionally, the video
was fun and clear to them and they learned the three types of floods.

Did your lesson meet your teaching goals?

My teaching goal from last lesson was to be more confident with my teaching. After talking to my MST
and the teacher assistant they said that acted more naturally this time. Also, that I went through the
lesson more smoothly than before.
Transform (T):
How might you enhance student learning of this lesson in the future?
We would do another experiment that represent the causes of floods like heavy rain, water body over
their banks or even hurricanes and tsunamis. The students can create their own village or environment
then can pour heavy rain on that village to see its effects as well.

What are the implications for your professional practice?

That was my last lesson for this teaching practice. What I need to work on for next time is to improve
my reflection after each lesson.
