Sieve Analysis

Introduction

Sieve analysis is the process of dividing a sample of aggregate into fraction of

the same size. The purpose of doing this analysis is to determine the grading or size
distribution of the aggregate which is important to find out whether the aggregate
pile we are studying is good for the mix or not.

Equipment

1. Standard Sieve- Sieves used for separating mixtures of sample according to its
size.

2. The Scale Balance - For weighing the samples.

3. Mortar and rubber-tipped pestle – To crush the sample into finer particles.

4. Oven - For drying samples

5. Mechanical Sieve Shaker

Procedures

1. Collect a representative dry sample soil. Sample particles having largest

particles of size No.4 Sieve should be about 500g.

2. Break the sample by using mortar and pestle.

3. Determine the mass of the sample accurately to 0.1 g (W)

4. Determine the weight of the sieves

5. Placed the weighted soil in the top of sieve stack and cover with the lid.
Shake for 5 minutes in order the sample pass in each sieves.

6. Weigh the sample retained in each of the sieves.
