PRE – LESSON Teacher Activities:

· List Lesson Goals:

1. Lesson Goal 1: The student will be able to name all 8 planets in order from the sun, write
informational paragraphs on each planet, and create a 3-D model of the solar system.

· List Materials and Technology Resources needed for the Lesson:

● Art/ crafting supplies
● Solar system notecards
● Computers (able to type project)
● Informational text on all planets
● Paper and pencils
● 25 copies of project directions and grading rubrics (below)

·
A. STARTING THE LESSON

· Review previous (days) lesson/assess previous learning:

● N/A
· Describe -Setting the stage for learning:
● Students will mainly work at their desks and computer stations for the project. Students
will be working independently on writing and in pairs for the 3-D model. Students will be
able to move freely around the room.

· Warm-up Activity:
● The teacher will students review the solar system by singing the solar system song.
● Teacher will ask students to name 2 facts about each planet.
● Teacher will let students know they will be completing a large project to show their knowledge
of the solar system.

B. Teaching THE LESSON

Lesson Activities:
Day 1
1. The teacher hand out the project directions and grading rubircs to students.
2. Teacher will explain directions to students: You will work with a partner to create a 3-D model of
the solar system using the supplies I provide. You will also write, revise, edit, and type up a
paragraph for each planet. The paragraphs need to have at least 5 sentences each and be
factual.
3. The teacher will select partners for the project and have the students move so they are seated
together.
4. The teacher will tell students that they will have a week to complete the project, with an hour to
work on it today. Tell students they need to start with the research for the planets and work
with their partners to think of what they want to use to make the model.
5. Teacher will let students work for an hour.
6. Teacher will have students turn in a slip of paper with what their plan for the model is at the end
of the time.
Day 2
1. Teacher will review expectations with students, and let them know that today they should be
finishing their notes and writing their rough drafts of their paragraphs.
2. Students that finish their rough drafts should, check in with the teacher, revise and edit their
work, and can start typing. Students will work for 1.5 hours.
3. Homework: Finish working on rough drafts of paragraphs
Day 3
1. Students should be meeting with teacher, revising and editing, and starting to type. After
students have 4 paragraphs typed, they can start working with their partner on the model.
2. Students will work for 1.5 hours
3. Homework: Continue working on typing the paragraphs
Day 4
1. Students will continue work on their projects. Students should finish typing their paragraphs,
and begin work on their model if not already started.
2. Students will have 1.5 hours to work
3. Homework: Complete typing paragraphs
Day 5
1. Students will complete projects and turn them in. Students should make sure they have all
needed criteria the rubic sets.
2. Students will get 1.5 hours to complete the project and turn it in.

C. LESSON CLOSURE
● The teacher will have the students turn in their projects and write a self assessment and peer
assessment of how the project went. What went well? What could have been improved? What
did you learn?

Lesson Assessments:
● The teacher will assess the writing on the writing continuum and/or writing rubric.
● Students self assessments will help guide teacher in what student thinks they needs to improve
upon- the teacher can use this information to help them grow in these areas
● Throughout the lesson, the teacher is meeting with students, providing feedback, and roving.
The teacher will collect observational information and assessment through observation.

Lesson Extension/Homework:
● This lessons would be done at the end of a unit on the solar system or done as a PBL lesson.
Solar System Project

The students will create a 3D model of the solar system and a paragraph on each planet. The students
model is worth 50% and the writing is worth 50%.

The model must include-

● The 8 planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)
● The Sun
● Each planet must be an appropriate size (ex. Jupiter should be the biggest, Mercury should be
the smallest).
● Each planet should be an appropriate distance away from one another (ex Mercury and Venus
should be closer than Mars and Jupiter).
● The planets and sun labeled.
● Must be 3D

The writing must be-

● One paragraph for each planet. Each paragraph should have at least 5 sentences in it.
● factual
● use proper grammar and mechanics
● Typed
● The writings must be turned in with the model

Examples of 3D projects-
● Shoebox diorama
● Mobile
Be creative, you can use anything to create this project!

EXTRA CREDIT: Write a paragraph on Pluto and what makes it a dwarf planet.
