Content Learning Objective (must include content, learning skill and student product):

Students will be able to read Superman document individually, in pairs, and then as a group
participate in a game with the goal to have students re-read the text and answer questions based
on understanding the text

Historical Thinking Skill and/or Historical Reading Skill Focus

The historical reading skills we will be focusing on is being able to re-read the text in an
inventive method for student comprehension.

4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including
figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on
meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is
particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful. (Include Shakespeare as well as other
authors.) (See grade 11–12 Language standards 4–6 for additional expectations.) CA

Narrative Summary of Tasks / Actions:

1. Introduce activity/game to students and explain instructions


2. Students read story individually
3. Student pair-share what the store was about
4. Students called on using equity strategy to discuss story
5. Students are placed in groups of 4
6. One students from each group comes up to front and answers questions based on text
on individual white board
7. If answer is correct the students picks a card and gets a point value based on that card.
8. If the answer is disputed, as a class, we discuss the answer to come to a collective
response.

9. If students are struggling i will give them the option to phone a friend (there group will
then discuss and send up one person to help the student)
10. If a question is disputed at times their group will be asked to defend their team mates
answer.

 Deck of playing cards
 White boards and markers

I will moderating with class walking them through the lesson and engaging with the students on a

The measure of understanding will come in the form of a class discussion and, if needed, the
teacher explicitly stating why we did this activity.

6. Student Reflection/Metacognition:
Will there be opportunities for students to reflect and improve on their Time:
learning?
At the end of class we will take the last 5 minutes to discuss why we did this activity. The reason
for this activity was to practice with students the re-reading activity that will be used with
historical documents in the future. In the near future students will be reading four primary source
documents and writing a discipline specific common assessment. This re-reading activity will
help them recall the importance of documents.
