BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

UNIT-I Introduction to Electrical Engineering: Ohm’s law, Basic circuit concepts, Kirchhoff’s
Laws, simple problems.

Network Analysis: Basic definitions, Types of Elements, Types of Sources, Resistive networks,
Inductive networks, Capacitive networks, Series Parallel circuits, Star Delta and Delta Star
transformation, Network theorems-Superposition, Thevenins’s, Maximum power transfer theorems and
simple problems.

UNIT-II Alternating Quantities: Principle of AC voltages, Waveforms and basic definitions, Root
Mean Square and Average values of Alternating Currents and Voltage, Form factor and Peak factor,
Phasor representation of Alternating Quantities, the J operator and Phasor algebra, Analysis of AC
circuits with single basic network element, Single Phase Series Circuits.

UNIT-III Transformers: Principle of operation, constructional details, Ideal Transformer and


Practical Transformer, Losses, Transformer Test, Efficiency and Regulation calculations, simple
problems.

UNIT-IV D.C. and A.C. Machines:


D.C generators: Principle of operation of dc machines, types of D.C generators, EMF equation in D.C
generator.
D.C motors: Principle of operation of dc motors, types of D.C motors, losses and torque equation,
losses and efficiency calculation in D.C generator.
A.C Machines: Three phase induction motor, principle of operation, slip and rotor frequency, torque
(simple problems)
UNIT-V Basic Instruments: Introduction, Classification of Instruments, Operating Principles,
Essential features of Measuring instruments, Permanent Magnet Moving Coil Instruments (PMMC),
Moving Iron Instruments, Ammeters and Voltmeters.

Course Objectives
After going through this course the student gets a thorough knowledge on basic electrical
parameters anddifferent types electrical (DC and AC)circuits and magnetic, the different
methods to solve the voltages, currents ,powers of the circuits , the network theorems to
solve the circuits, elctromechanical energy conversion principle ,construction operation
characteristics DC and AC machines, with which he/she can able to apply the
aboveconceptual things to real-world electrical and electronics problems and
applications.

COURSE OUT COMES:


1. To Know about basic concepts of Electrical circuits and Network theorems in Low

power Consuming devices.

2. To analyze basic concepts of alternating quantities and analysis of AC Circuits.

3. To understand the necessity and operation of Transformers , construction ,

efficiency & regulation of transformers.

4. To know the working and Identify requirements of DC Machines for domestic &

industrial Purpose.

5. To understand the Priciple of operation of 3-Phase Induction Motor ( AC) and its

Characteristics.

Brief Notes on Importance of Course:

 This course provides in - depth knowledge of DC Electrical circuits. which is the basis of design of
any Electrical circuit.
 This course provides the basic knowledge of AC Supply which is used for domestic purpose.
 By studying this subject, the students can design and understand Electrical circuits and its
importance in Electrical Equipments'.
 This course provides the knowledge of operation of Transformers, DC Generators & Motors
 This course provides the knowledge of operation of instruments like Ammeters & Voltmeters.

Prerequisites:
 Kirchhoff’s laws, Series - Parallel circuits ( Physics)
 Faraday’s laws, Fleming’s left hand & right hand rules

mathematics to solve the problems in Network theorems & Kirchhoff’s laws to find the response.

2. (a) Why are the Root Mean square values of alternating quantities more important than their average values?

(b) Find the Root Mean Square of the resultant current in a conductor which carries simultaneously sinusoidal
alternating current with a maximum value of 10A and direct current of 10A.

(c) A current wave is represented by the equation i = 20 Sin251t. Calculate the maximum and RMS value of
current and its frequency.

1. (a) What are the functions of a transformer.

(b) Derive an expression for voltage per turn of a transformer.

2.(a) Define voltage regulation of a transformer. Deduce the expression for thevoltage regulation.

(b) The number of turns on the primary and secondary windings of a single phase transformer are 350 and 35
respectively. If the primary is connected to a 2.2 KV 50 HZ supply determine the secondary voltage.

3. Draw the phasor diagrams of a transformer at no load and full load lagging power factor conditions and
explain the operation of a transformer.

4. (a) Explain the construction of a single phase transformer.

(b) Discuss in detail the difference between a core type and a shell type trans former.

2. (a) Derive the expression of induced emf of dc generator.

(b) An 8 pole lap wound dc generator has 960 conductors, a flux of 40 milliwebers and is driven at 400 rpm.
Find induced emf.

3. What is the principle of operation of a dc generator ? Why is commutator and brush arrangement necessary
for the operation of dc generator.

4. (a) Derive the torque equation of a dc motor.

(b) A 250 volts dc shunt motor takes 80 A at full load. Resistances of armature and field windings are 0.1 ohm
and 125 ohms respectively. Determine i) armature current ii) field current iii) back emf developed at full load.

5. (a) Explain the working principle of three phase induction motor.

(b) A 6 pole induction motor is fed by three phase 50 HZ supply and running with a full load slip of 3%. Find
the full load speed of induction motor and also the frequency of rotor emf
