JANUARY. REBECCA MORLEDGE
In September 2017 I started studying for my MA in Illustration at Nottingham Trent
University. I have always had a strong interest in children’s books and decided that this
would be the perfect opportunity to concentrate my art on creating illustrations
specifically for picture books. Taking the course was one of the best decisions I have
made. Going back into education makes you take a fresh look at everything you do and
look closely at what those around you are doing. I have always said I would love to create
illustrations for children’s book but never really did anything about it. I produced four
picture books in total during the one-year course which felt like a huge achievement. It
was a very intense year of nonstop work but so rewarding, I would highly recommend the
course to anybody considering going back into education. I now continue to create my
street and city scenes but also am constantly looking for ideas for my next picture book
creation.

FEBRUARY. KATE BROOKS

Having studied Fashion and Surface Decoration at University, I have spent the last few
years rekindling my love of creating patterns and screen-printing; 20 years after I
graduated! I like to create colourful prints, using only a small number of colours and
layers, with my inspiration being the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire. I hand draw my
designs in ink and create most of the print layers on my Mac before I head for the print
studio. All are handmade original screen prints.

MARCH. FRANCES DAUNT
Frances Daunt is an animal artist from Lea Nr Matlock. She works in a variety of
media, from pastel/mixed media art to her award-winning felted work, which has been
exhibited nationally.
‘I believe that my love for animals shines through in my work, from a close up of a tiger’s
face to a portrait of a beloved pet I work hard to capture the spirit and energy of the
animal.’
Frances work is collected all over the world last year she won the Keith Shackleton Award
from Nature In Art at Wallsworth Hall, the world’s first museum and art gallery dedicated
to fine, decorative and applied art inspired by nature.

APRIL. PENELOPE TIMMIS

Shropshire artist Penelope has painted all her life, she started selling paintings 14 years
ago. Since then she has had a huge number of solo exhibitions and now display her work in
over 30 galleries in the UK.
‘I am well known for my “Fowl”, “Flowers” and “Land and Seascape” paintings. My style is
distinctive, colour, movement and life are the key elements of my work.
I am a Member of The Society of Women Artist and Fellow of the Royal Birmingham Society
of Artists, I have a number of awards behind me.’
In May 2017, as a guest of the Village School Improvement Project (VSIP), Penelope visited
a school in Mfuwe, Eastern Province, Zambia. In order to help raise funds for new buildings
and equipment.

MAY. LESLEY LINLEY
Lesley’s artworks are predominantly landscape and waterfalls; several them depict
waterfalls that are on the Isle of Skye which was her home for some years she has returned
to her roots in Derbyshire and has begun work on local waterfall scenes.
‘I paint in transparent watercolour, without use of masking fluid or body colour; this
approach means that paintings take many hours to complete. Recent work is mostly
mountains and waterfalls around Skye as I lived on the island until April last year. I don't just
paint the large/famous waterfalls, but any that appeal to me. Some of these
paintings are large and more complex works; the size and time involved in producing each
piece make it impractical to paint outdoors.’

Lesley is currently working on her new book which will be published by search press.

JUNE. TARNIA MAGEE

Working primarily in mixed media Tarnia enjoys painting the human form as a
structure of realism. To contrast this, she incorporates abstraction using texture in
order to express movement and vitality.

‘I am very passionate about experimenting with colours to convey a mood or an

emotion and I am inspired by current trends in interior design and fashion to
achieve certain colour combinations.

In turn, I hope my paintings captivate and engage the viewer enough to evoke an
emotion or a sense of connection.’

JULY. CLARE WHITE
Clare White is a landscape painter from the Peak District who likes to experiment and
push materials to create layers and textures. These paintings are an expression of the way
she experiences places in the Derbyshire landscape.

Clare has recently started a series of paintings inspired by the Weleda Field in Ilkeston,
Derbyshire, an area of several acres where Weleda grow the plants they use in their
products: "A beautiful place where the human activity is in harmony with nature and the
earth. She will continue this series throughout each season.

AUGUST. CAROL HILL

Carol is a member of the Society of Women Artists and a Member of the Royal Birmingham
Society of Artists. She is a fully trained Adult Education teacher and gives workshops and
demonstrations to art societies in the UK and overseas as well as critiques and residential
courses at Alison House in Cromford.
She has been painting since the 60’s and has always strived to capture the atmosphere of
the place – be it landscape, seascape or still-life. The light stimulates her to catch the
“moment in time” it is what captures her imagination. She loves to paint outside as well
as in the studio and the colours and tones interest her very much and pushing techniques
and ideas to create something different and exciting.
She has travelled all her life and find different countries so interesting to paint, however,
Derbyshire is her home and it has a unique light and atmosphere of its own, which she
never tires of painting.

NOVEMBER. MARK BERESFORD
Whilst enjoying a successful career in Logistics, Mark renewed his passion for art.
Originally a watercolourist, Mark’s most recent discovery of oil now provides the perfect
medium to capture mood and atmosphere of sea, land and city subjects. He likes to
pursue subjects that evoke atmosphere, light and accommodate a ‘soft edge’
Mark is a Sheffield based artist painting the city itself, reflecting many childhood
memories of the weather and busy people. Further inspiration is drawn from the
neighbouring rugged landscape and changing skies of the Peak District. His great escape
the Isles of Scilly reflects the white sands, blue seas and sheer tranquillity of the beautiful
isles. Images of which are produced following endless hours of watching rather than study.
Mark is currently exhibiting in several galleries including London and Truro. and has most
recently had a collection of works in the Spring Affordable Art Fair, Battersea, London.

CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION. RUTH GRAY & MARTIN SLOMAN.

Ruth is a mixed media artist - The subjects that really excite her have a sense of history,
townscapes, or landscapes, rolling skies and hidden corners. She loves the moods of nature
and the weather and seasons. While her paintings are usually representational, they are
often stylised or abstracted to a degree and she certainly takes great liberty with the
colours she chooses. She aims not for realism but for capturing mood and atmosphere. No
matter what her subject, she wants to create a painting that people can live with and
enjoy for a long time.

7
Gallery owner Martin Sloman is based near Idridgehay, Derbyshire and has been painting
for just over fifteen years. He really enjoys painting a wide variety of subjects, but
particularly loves seascapes and animals. Commissions are an exciting challenge and so
far, he has covered such diverse subjects as vintage cars, Moto GP, canal barges and
family pets. Martin has paintings in private collections in America, Japan, and Germany as
well as the UK.
