Questions (25 points)

1. In part I, is the change in total kinetic energy equal in magnitude to the change in
gravitational potential energy? Why?
2. In part II, is the change in total kinetic energy equal in magnitude to the change
in gravitational potential energy? Explain.
3. Is the change in kinetic energy of m1 is equal to the work done according to
equation (3)? This is a check to see if the work-kinetic energy theorem holds for
m1.

(Part II)
4. Compare the qualitative nature of the velocity versus time plots Part I and II. How
would you describe the behavior shown in each plot? Can you explain the
differences in the behavior?

What would you say the behavior of the velocity is for large times in Part II? In
this long-time limit, what would you expect the acceleration of the masses to be?

(you might want to review section 6-3 of the text)

5. In the long-time limit in Part II, where does the energy coming from the decrease
in potential energy go?
