Learning Too Toot Your Own Horn:

● New Things You Learned:


1. I never realized that there were that many standards in Music. As a student you
never think about all the work that the music teacher or classroom teacher puts
into the class.
2. That one of the main reason teachers don’t include music into the classroom
because it makes them uncomfortable. This is interesting to me because I love
music.
3. That integrating music into the classroom can be as easy as playing music into the
background.

● Things that Surprised you:


1. It surprised me how easy and important it is to integrate music into the
classroom.
2. It surprises me that it isn’t stressed more that teachers should have more
knowledge in how music effects that classroom.

● Question:
1. Is there a school that requires including music into the classroom?
a. I couldn't find a school but i did find a page that give the teacher ideas on
how to include music into the classroom which is a start to making it a
requirement.
● Summary: This article emphasizes how music in the classroom and bring out your
students skill. You don't have to sing and dance for music to be integrated into the
classroom. You can make a song or simply play music in the background. Or you can use
music as a transition.

1. There is a school that requires music integration into its program.
2. That several studies show that music was the only school activity to directly
correlate to academic progress.
3. That music improves the academic scores of elementary and middle school
students.

● Things that Surprised you:


1. It is crazy to me that the difference was only 18 min. That seems like a very low
amount of time.
2. It surprises me that other school activities don’t improve academic progress.

● Question:
1. Is there a way to incorporate a specific music section into the classroom?
a. Yes, you can use chimes and bells to enhance games and use songs to
notify students to start or end a certain task.
● Summary: This article talked about how incorporating music into the classroom increases
academic progress. It was a study done on several schools with similar surroundings and
music programs. The professors doing this study were all published and accredited.

Music Makes You Smarter:

1. I didn’t k Have there been any studies on the effect of music education in the
past 2 years? now that there was a national organization specifically for music
education.
2. That a CD of Mozart was distributed to every baby born in the state of Georgia
and Tennessee.
3. There is a positive correlation to music education and math skills.
● Things that Surprised you:
1. It surprised me that so many countries had specific organizations for music
education.
2. It surprised me that the phrase “music makes you smarter” in August 2011
garnered 7,720,000 results.

● Question:

a. The newest study I could find was in 2013.
● Summary: This article talks about studies done to prove or disprove the “music makes
you smarter” theory. The author talks about several studies that have been done with
several different schools. Neither proving or disproving this theory but simply giving that
facts about the studies that have been done.

1. Musician's brains look different on an FMRI scan.
2. Musician’s have a better connection between the to cortex.
3. That babies process their mothers voices the same way that they process music.

● Things that Surprised you:


1. It surprised me that she helped write an video for Ted Talk.
2. It surprised me that music being played to people makes their brain fire in more
ways than anything else.

1. Can learning to play an instrument make you smarter?
a. The page I found stated the people who play an instrument generally have
a higher IQ.
● Summary: This video talks about how music can improve your cognitive ability. I talks
about how music is undiscovered ground and how it should be standardized into the
classroom. How musicans brains look different that others and how babies process their
mother's voice the same way that they process music.
