Mechanical Properties

• X65 Flange Steel meets fully the mechanical property requirements of the API 5LX X65 line pipe
specifications whilst maintaining a high degree of toughness and weldability.
• Careful control in the production of this high strength low alloy steel using secondary steelmaking
techniques enables the guaranteed minimum strength levels to be attined in ruling sections up to 6 inches
(150mm). Restrictions on the analysis provides a low carbon equivalent and excellent weldability.

Weldability

The steel analysis is controlled to ensure that carbon equivalent does not exceed 0.43 thus providing good
welding characteristics.

A hardness level of <250 HV (22Rc) can be achieved in the heat affected zone (HAZ), if the welding conditions
and parameters are suitably controlled. A typical hardness profile across a manual metal arc (MMA) butt weld is
shown in Fig.1.

Controlled thermal severity (CTS) welding tests have given excellent results. With suitable pre-heat and heat
input during welding freedom from cracking can be readily obtained.

Charpy impact tests carried out in the weld area on five heats gave excellent results:-

Typical fracture appearance transition temperature (FATT) values are of the order of –60oC.
