1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope
This design criteria is intended to present the design procedure/method, design parameters as well as
material standards for structural analysis and detail design of steel structures to be constructed at
Chlor Alkali Plant in Khalifa Industrial zone Abu Dhabi

1.2 Unit
The units of measurement in design shall be metric SI unit

1.3 Design Code & Standards


Abu Dhabi International Building Code 2013 shall be the governing code. Initial reference shall be
made from American code.
For the purpose of design Abu Dhabi code shall be used in conjunction with the below code also
referenced in Abu Dhabi code

a.) AISC-360-10
b.) ASCE/SEI 7-05
c.) ACI-318
d.) ASTM
e.) AISI S100-2007

1.4 Site Information


The site is located Khalifa Industrial Zone, Abu Dhabi

1.4.1 Basic Wind Speed

 Assumed Basic Wind speed V3s = 45 m/s

1.4.2 Earthquake

 Maximum considered earthquake ground motion of 0.2 sec spectral response acceleration
Ss = 0.5g
 Maximum considered earthquake ground motion of 1 sec spectral response acceleration
S1 = 0.2g

2. MATERIAL

2.1 Steel

2.1.1Structural Steel
Material properties of structural steel shall conform to BS 4 part 1, BS 4360 or equivalent for rolled
sections, plate & built-up plated sections
 Unit weight :78.5 kN/m 3
 Minimum yield strength(f y) : 275 MPa for Grade 43a or S275 JR or equivalent
: 345 MPa for Grade 50a or S355JR or equivalent
 Minimum Tensile strength : 580-430 MPa for Grade 43a or 275JR or equivalent
: 640-490 MPa for Grade 50a or S355JR or equivalent
 Modulus of Elasticity (Es) : 210,000 MPa

2.1.2Structural Bolts (for joints)

 High Strength bolts : ASTM A325, Type 1, Hot dipped galvanized or


equivalent
 High Strength Nuts : ASTM A563 or equivalent

2.1.3 Anchor Bolts (for foundation)

 Mild Steel Anchor Bolts : ASTM F1554, Gr 36


 Nuts for Mild steel anchor bolts : ASTM A 563, Grade A Heavy Hex

2.1.4 Pipe Handrail

 Pipe handrail shall conform to ASTM A53 grade B

2.1.5 Round Hollow Section Shapes (HSS)

 ASTM A53 Type E or S

2.1.6Weld

 Welds shall be as per specification provided in AISC 360-10/ BS EN 499: 1995

2.1.7Steel Grating

 Steel grating shall conform to ASTM A 569 or equivalent

2.1.8 Floor Checkered plate

 Checkered plate material shall confirm to ASTM A36

2.1.9 Grout

 Non-shrink grout will be used underside of base plate with minimum strength of 40 MPa

3. LOAD & LOAD COMBINATION

3.1 Design Loads


Following loads will be considered in the structural design.

3.3 Live Load


Live loads are loads produced by the use and occupancy of building or structure. They include the
weight of all movable loads, including personnel, tools, miscellaneous equipments, movable
partitions, cranes, hoists, and storage material.

3.3.1 Minimum Uniform Live Load


Following are the minimum live loads to be considered as per ADIBC 2013

3.4 Wind Load


Wind load shall be calculated in accordance with section 1609 ADIBC 2013 & ASCE 7 2005
considering the following parameters
 Basic wind speed = 45 m/s
 Wind directionality factor, Kd = 0.85* (MWFRS) *will vary with type of structure or equipment
 Topographic factor Kzt = 1
 Velocity pressure exposure coefficient, Kz = as per Table 6-3
 Exposure category :B
 Surface roughness :B
 Wind pressure qz = 0.613 IKzKztKdV2
 Importance factor, I = 1.15 as per Table 6-1
 Occupancy category III
 Internal pressure +/- 0.5 (partially enclosed building)

3.5 Earthquake Load


Earthquake load has been applied in accordance with ADIBC 2013 & ASCE 7-05
 Site class B (as per soil report)
 Ss = 0.5
 S1 = 0.2
 Site coefficient for short period F a =1.0
 Site coefficient for short period F v =1.0
 Maximum considered spectral response acceleration short period S ms = Fa*Ss = 0.5

4.2 Slenderness Ratio of Compression Members


For members whose design is based on compressive forces, slenderness ratio Kl/r is taken as 200.
For members whose design is based on tensile force, the slenderness ratio is taken as 300

4.3 Painting & Galvanizing


Painting and galvanizing shall be performed as per the procedure & standard provided below:
 Galvanization
a.) Structural steel work shall be hot-dip galvanized to minimum thickness of 90 microns in
accordance with BSEN ISO 1461 and doc no S-P295-000-39-7-0714
b.) Surfaces shall be cleaned to BS 7079 before protective treatment & welding shall be done
before galvanizing
c.) Galvanizing bath shall be molten metal with 98.5% by weight of zinc
d.) Coating shall be of minimum 90 microns thickness
e.) All grating, checkered plate, hand rail, roof members such as purlin, girt and structural bolts,
nuts, washer, anchor bolt shall be hot dip galvanized as per BS 729: 1994
 Painting
a.) All main primary steel members to be shot blasted and painted with epoxy paint of 240 micron
DFT
