It is estimated that 30 percent of the population lacks access to oral health care. This discussion will focus
on this critical issue and outline the barriers this vulnerable population faces accessing necessary dental
care.

How to address oral health care access barriers has become a national issue. CDA has established two
workgroups to address this issue: the Access to Care Workgroup and the Workforce Taskforce.
This dicussion will focus on the work of thoe entities.

The legislature recently passed ASsembly Bill 1524 (Hayashi) that replaces the California clinical
licensure exam with a portfolio licensure model. The governor recenly signed this bill inot law after
considerableefforts from organized dentistry. Dr. Felsenfeld was a key player inthe enactment of this
historic bill and will share his experiences with our group.

Effective Communication Skills for Student Leaders Room 103
Bruce Peltier, PhD, MBA, Professor of Psychology and Ethics, University of the Pacific,
Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry
It is not enough to know your material and to be enthusiastic. Leaders must effectively communicate their
message. This workshop will begin with a briefing on good and bad use of PowerPoint followed by a
workshop on public speaking, including video sessions in small groups. Successful leaders work on these
skills throughout their career.
