Unit Plan:
5 Days of Christmas Activities

I have chosen to plan a unit that would take place the week prior to Christmas/Winter

vacation, in a grade 3 Phys Ed class. This could also work in the majority of elementary physical

education classes. The week before Christmas is a little bit hectic, and students tend to lose

focus and the holiday approaches. Not only do the students get excited, but the schedule

becomes a little shuffled around as well. Students may be sick, leaving earlier for the break, or

because other Christmas related activities are taking place. There also may be events

happening in the gym, where this unit would need to take place earlier. This unit plan will be

great to engage students and to celebrate the holiday spirit with Christmas related activities.

The activities range from games, teamwork activities, and include a little bit of holiday dance. It

would also be a fun way to assess concepts that you have already covered in the first half of the

school year.

The majority of the outcomes that hope to be met during this unit is teamwork and

cooperation, and being active. Certain games will include skills such as balance, running, and

dance skills. However, the main goals of this week’s unit plan is to keep students moving and

working together. I will assess this unit two ways. Students will wear pedometers throughout

the unit, and keep track of how many steps they can accumulate throughout the week. They

will keep track of their steps and give themselves daily self-evaluations on a worksheet

throughout the unit. This worksheet booklet is included at the end of this until plan.
Lesson #1 –
December 18 Gingerbread Tag – 40 min
GLOs: A &C Learning Activities:

 This first lesson will begin with notifying students what the unit
will consist of. Students will be taught how to use pedometers
and how to keep track and self-evaluate themselves. They will set
a goal at the beginning of the week for how many steps they will
take.

 Gingerbread tag is similar to British bulldog, but played with four

corners.
 One student is designated “It” or “The Baker”
 She/he stands in the middle of the gym and yells “Run run as fast
as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man”
 Other students have to run from their corner to one of the other
three mats where they are safe.
 If students are caught, they help out the baker until there are no
gingerbread left.
 Modification can be made to change up the game. Modes of
transportation could change to skipping, hopping, crawling, etc.
