5. RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1. Project Director/Manager is the overall responsible for ensuring that this Procedure is
implemented properly on this Project.
5.2. HSE Manager or his designee (environmental team) on site will be responsible for the
implementation of this procedure.
6. PROCEDURE
6.3.3. Close all drain ports and add enough potable water to achieve a depth of
approximately two feet inside the tank.
6.3.4. Add one gallon of household bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite) for every 5000
gallons of total tank capacity. Add enough potable water to thoroughly mix the bleach in
the tank water. Open all valves and ports just long enough to fill pipes, hoses, drains, etc.
with the sterilization solution in the tank.
6.3.5. Continue filling the tank with potable water to the overflow point, then close the filling
port. Allow solution to remain in the tank for no less than 24 hours.
6.3.6. Note: this sterilization solution will have a chlorine concentration of about 10mg/l,
which is not suitable for drinking purposes. This solution must either be discarded or
allowed to remain in the tank until the chlorine concentration drops to the
concentration suitable for drinking.
6.3.7. The chlorine concentration in the sterilizing solution will decrease gradually with time
on its own, but the concentration must be analyzed to determine when it becomes
suitable for drinking purposes.
6.3.8. If the sterilizing solution is to be discarded, it shall be discharged as per the applicable
environmental regulations and as per Project Waste Management Plan (PP707-WMP-
965).
6.3.9. If the sterilizing solution cannot be discharged as is, the chlorine can be neutralized by
the addition of either ten ounces of sodium bisulfate (NaSO2) for every 5,000 gallons of
sterilizing solution.
6.4. Cleaning Programs
6.4.1. Cleaning and disinfection programs must ensure that all parts of the establishment are
appropriately clean, and must include a procedure and schedule for water filter
replacement as shown in Attachment 7.1
6.4.2. Cleaning and disinfection programs must be continually and effectively monitored for
their suitability and effectiveness and where necessary documented. A flow diagram for
the drinking water facilities and cleaning procedures is shown in Attachment 7.2
6.4.3. Attachment 7.3 shows the cleaning schedule of the drinking water stations, this
program to be implemented from the date mentioned, and the locations and numbers of
the water resource facilities will be regularly updated.
6.5. Training
6.5.1. All personnel who are assigned to sanitize and fill the water containers shall be trained
in the potential hazards related to poor personal hygiene, unsanitary practices as well as
the hazards of handling hypochlorite solutions.

briefed on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) relevant to the various disinfectants
solutions and substances they use during their work process.
6.5.3. As well, personnel assigned to sanitize and fill the water containers shall be trained on
the following:
6.5.3.1. Reporting to their supervisors any condition that may affect their personal
hygiene.
6.5.3.2. Manual handling techniques.
6.5.4. A detailed diagram of training requirements for personnel involved in water
