1. Explain the concept of Archimedes Law

2. Write the equations of Archimedes Law
3. Solve the problems of physics relating to the concept of the Archimedes Law

D. Learning Materials
- Fact
1. A stone will drown in the water, but the wood will stay float/not drown into the
water.
2. Ships are very large and heavy but it can float on the water surface althought
its size is much larger than the stone.

- Concept
an object that is partially or completely dipped into the liquid will experience
an upward force equal to the weight of liquid removal. The magnitude of the
upward force (Fa) is the excess weight of the object when in the air (W u) with
liquid inside (Wc). The upward force (F a) with liquid inside (Wc). The upward
force who we called archimedes force often referred to as the buoyant force.
an object is said to be floating if the mass of the object is smaller than the
density of the liquid (ρ object < ρ fluid). And said drown if the mass of the object
is greater than the density of the liquid (ρ object > ρ fluid). However, if the mass
of the object is equal to the density of the liquid (ρ object = ρ fluid), the object is
said to drift.

- Principle
Mathematically the law of Archimedes can be expressed as the following :

.................(1)

Information:

Fa= Bouyant Force / Archimedes Force / Upward Force ( N )

Density of the fluid ( kg m3 )

g = Gravity ( m/s2 )

V= Volume the object ( m3)

1. An object is immersed in water Information : 25
whose mass is 1000 Kg / m3. ρ = 1000 Kg/M3
Volume of dyed objects 1.5 m3. g = 9.8 N/Kg
If the weight of the object is V = 1.5 M3
500N, what is the upward force
the object has? Asked:
Fa?

Answer :
Fa = ρ.g.V
Fa = 1000 Kg/m3.9,8 N/kg.1,5 M3
Fa = 14.700 N/M2
So, the upward force the objects is 14.700
N/M
2. 4,000 kg mass of a boat floating Information :
in the sea. If the density of sea m = 4000 kg
water is 1.030 kg / m3 how ρ = 1030 kg/m3
many m3 of sea water is moved? Asked :
(g = 9.8 m / s2) V?
Answer :
The requirement of a floating object is:
Weight object = Upward force
25
W = Fa
mxg=ρxgxV
m=ρxV
4.000 = 1.030 x V
V = 4.000 /1.030
= 3,88 m3
so, the water volume which moved by the
boat is 3,88 m3
3. The weight of an object in the air Information : 25
is 5 N. When the object in the Weight of objects in air = Weight of object
water the weight is (density = = 5 Newton
1000 kg / m3) 3,2 N. If the
gravitational acceleration g = 10 Weight of objects in water = 3.2 Newton
m / s2 then the density of the Density of water = 1000 kg / m3
object is .....
Gravity = 10 m / s2
The object mass: w = m g -> m = w:g = 5 N
: 10 m / s2 = 0.5 kg
Asked:
Density of the object?
Answer:
The weight of objects in the water is
smaller because of the Floating Force.
Floating Force = Weight of objects in the air
- Weight objects in liquids
Floating Force = 5 Newton - 3.2 Newton =
1.8 Newton
4. A stone with a volume of 1 m 3 Information :
dipped entirely into the water V = 1 m3
with a density of 1000 kg/m3. If ρ = 1000 kg/m3
earth's gravitational g = 10 m/s2
acceleration : 10 m/s2, then the
rock will experience an upward Asked: 25

Answer:
Fa = ρ V g
Fa = 1000 kg/m3 .1 m3 .10 m/s2
= 10.000N

Archimedes’ Principle states that the upward buoyant force which acts on an object is
equal to the weight of the fluid which it displaces. Use this principle and your knowledge
of physics to solve the following problems.
Other useful information:
r water = 1.0 g/cm3 r ethanol=0.76 g/cm3 r mercury=13.6 g/cm3
r air = 1.20 kg/m3 r He=0.18 kg/m3

Volume of a block: V=lwh Density: r =m/V

Volume of a sphere: V=(4/3) p r3 Weight: Fg=mg
Net force: S F = ma

Question:
1. If a block of aluminum measures 4.0 cm x 5.0 cm x 2.0 cm is completely submerged
in a tank of water, what volume of water does it displace?
2. The mass of the aluminum block is 108 g. Determine its density.
3. If you release the metal block, will it sink, or will it float to the surface? Explain your
reasoning.
4. If the block was submerged in ethyl alcohol instead, would the tension in the string be
bigger or smaller? Explain your answer.
5. Imagine a person with a mass of 85 kg (188 lbs). If their density is 940 kg/m 3
(slightly less than the density of water), what is their volume in cubic meters?
