“A 'Cure' for Autism at Any Cost.” Spectrum | Autism Research News, 22 Sept.

2017, www.spectrumnews.org/features/deep-dive/cure-autism-cost/. A source that

describes the history regarding a “cure for autism”. It is reliable because the site it is

found on focuses on news about mental disorders and the events around them. They

have been researching these things for a while now and have built up credibility

because of it. Relevant because autism is dissociative disorder that will be discussed in

the final paper.

“Amnesia.” Mayo Clinic, Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research,

25 Aug. 2017, www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/amnesia/symptoms-causes/syc-

20353360. This is something that lists the causes of amnesia along with symptoms and

methods of dealing with it. Reliable because the information is from a clinic that treats

these disorders. Relevant because the causes for other dissociative disorders must be

known if we are to compare them to others.

Bigthink editor. “Why There May Never Be a Cure for Autism.” Big Think, Big

Think, 6 Oct. 2018, bigthink.com/think-tank/why-there-may-never-be-a-cure-for-autism.

This is something that states why there can’t be a cure for autism or at least that there
may not be one for a long time. This is relevant because I plan to refute this as I believe

that we will indeed have a way to not cure it, but overcome it.

“'Brain Training' Overcomes Tics in Tourette Syndrome, Study Finds.”

ScienceDaily, ScienceDaily, 17 Apr. 2014,

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/04/140417090545.htm. This is an article about a

method that is used to have less tics while affected by turrets syndrome, which was

proven to be effective. It is reliable because this study comes from the British

Psychological Society (BPS), who would most likely have a lot to say on a matter like

this considering they base all of their research around that field. It is relevant because

this is a method of controlling one of the more disorders that already exists, which could

mean that the method to permanently disable it is just around the corner.

Chris. “Dealing with Dissociative Symptoms.” Chris Mackey, 3 Mar. 2018,

www.chrismackey.com.au/dealing-with-dissociative-symptoms/. This is a source that

details the more advanced ways to treat any kind of disorder. Reliable because the site

it is found on is managed by a private group of psychologists with 23 years of

experience each. Relevant because the best methods have to be known if we are to

ever look at our current progress and say “we can improve this way” and such.

“Dissociative Amnesia.” Psychology Today, Sussex Publishers,

www.psychologytoday.com/us/conditions/dissociative-amnesia. This is a short page of

information on probably the most devastating dissociative disorder. Reliable because it

is posted on a site that has all the latest news on psychology discoveries which are

backed up by references. Relevant because we need to know just how much the

disorders can affect us by seeing which has the most affect.

“Dissociative Disorders.” Causes | Mind, the Mental Health Charity - Help for

Mental Health Problems, www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-

healthproblems/dissociative-disorders/causes/#.W8gGK2hKiUk. This source gives us

some basic information on what dissociative disorders are and how they are caused.

Reliable because they care about the information enough to revise every so often to

keep it relevant for everyone, this is a site that is purely meant to educate those who do

not know so the information is most likely not inaccurate. Relevant because it is updated

whenever new information comes through that mind be important.

“Dissociative Disorders.” Mayo Clinic, Mayo Foundation for Medical Education

and Research, 17 Nov. 2017, www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-

conditions/dissociativedisorders/symptoms-causes/syc-20355215. This source lists the

things that can cause disorders in people and when they usually start. Reliable because

the information comes from an actual clinic that treats these kinds of things, and for the

most part would like to see them cured, thus they provide information to make progress

towards that goal. Relevant because we need to identify the causes before we can find

a way to possibly prevent them.

“Dissociative Experiences and Disorders among Women Who Identify

Themselves as Sexual Abuse Survivors.” Child Abuse & Neglect, Pergamon, 30 May

2002, www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/014521349390088M This is an

excerpt from a book on child abuse which can let us in on how these disorders begin

and how to spot them. Reliable because it comes from a person who wrote a book

detailing all the aspects of abuse at a young age, so they have credibility as author.

Relevant because we need ro know exactly what kinds of stress can cause trauma

great enough to spawn a disorder.

Higgins, Gillian. “Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2017 Revealed.” Consult QD,

Consult QD, 23 Jan. 2017, consultqd.clevelandclinic.org/top-10-medical-innovations-

2017-revealed/. This is a list of recent medical innovations that can give you an idea of

what to expect here in 50 years. Reliable because the information is coming from a

clinic that might just use these innovations, since they want to be the best at what they

do, they will see what innovations will work. Relevant because my argument is that we

will, in time, have the technology to overcome these disorders and we must understand

what recent innovations are here to see where we might go from here.

Mamarde, Abhishek, et al. Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, Medknow

Publications & Media Pvt Ltd, 2013, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3868095/.

This Journal talks about the least known about but most fascinating dissociative

disorder. Reliable because it is a scholarly journal published by someone coming from a

medical college in India. Relevant because this is the disorder we are the farthest from

overcoming any time soon.

“NAMI.” NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness, www.nami.org/Learn-

More/MentalHealth-Conditions/Dissociative-Disorders/Treatment Describes the

methods of treatments for dissociative disorders. Reliable because it is published by the

national alliance on mental illness (NAMI). Relevant because the known methods of

treatment are an important factor in my answer.

Nordqvist, Christian. “Amnesia: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments.” Medical

News Today, MediLexicon International, 13 Dec. 2017,

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/9673.php. More detailed information on amnesia

and what the causes, effects, and treatments for it. Reliable because the information

was reviewed by the University of Chicago Illinois, School of medicine. Relevant

because the treatment to overcoming dissociative disorders will vary greatly from

disorder to disorder.

Rose, Julia. “10 Self-Care Tips for People Who Dissociate.” The Mighty,

themighty.com/2016/06/self-care-tips-for-dissociation/. This is something that gives

information on ways to help yourself in your daily life if you have a dissociative disorder.

Reliable because the person writing this suffers from anxiety and wants others to cope

with the same pain she feels, that and she would not lie if she was affected by a
disorder herself. Relevant because these are small ways that can help people but they

can potentially lead to new methods if they work.

Sadybekov, Anastasiia, et al. “An Autism Spectrum Disorder-Related De Novo

Mutation Hotspot Discovered in the GEF1 Domain of Trio.” Nature News, Nature

Publishing Group, 19 Sept. 2017, www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-00472-0. This

source tells about a gene that was recently discovered that might just be the cause of

autism. Reliable because they back up every claim with scientific facts along with

physical graphs and references. Relevant because this is the source of one of the

biggest dissociative disorders and we could stop it here with enough research.

“The History of HIV.” Healthline, Healthline Media,

www.healthline.com/health/hivaids/history. This is a source explaining the history of the

AIDS virus. It is reliable because it was medically reviewed on January 29, 2018 so the

information is recent and true. It is relevant because in less than 40 years of discovering

the AIDS virus, we have already found numerous ways to fight it, which can repeat itself

for dissociative disorders.

“The National Autistic Society - What Are the Causes and Is There a 'Cure'?”

Autism Support - Leading UK Charity - National Autistic Society,

www.autism.org.uk/about/whatis/causes.aspx. This is information like the rest except it

talks about accepting autism and other disorders as part of neurodiversity. It is credible

because the information comes from the national autism society itself. I plan to use the
“Neurodiversity” as something to refute considering disorders like these only hold us

back.

Urken, Ross Kenneth. “If You Wanted to Know How the First Human Head

Transplant Might Work.” The Independent, Independent Digital News and Media, 1 May

2016, www.independent.co.uk/news/science/science-or-science-fiction-how-an-italian-

doctorhopes-to-perform-first-human-head-transplant-a7007676.html. This an article

detailing the basics on the italian doctor attempting to perform the world’s first head

transplant on a willing subject. It is reliable because all the facts that are presented can

be backed up by other sites which say the same thing. It is relevant because This is an

example of something that we might perfect in the future but we are only just

experiencing it now, this is to show that we are further along than we might think.

Walker, E R, et al. “Mortality in Mental Disorders and Global Disease Burden

Implications: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.” JAMA Psychiatry., U.S. National

Library of Medicine, Apr. 2015, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25671328. This is an

journal that gives reasons as to why mortality rates are higher among those who are

mentally ill. Reliable because the author has credibility through there degrees at medical

school. Relevant because there will be more deaths among those who are mentally ill

which means people will be morally obligated to help find a way to beat these disorders

especially if they have affected a loved one.
