Guidelines for M.Th Missiology Entrance Exam, January 2019

To gain admission, candidates applying for MTh in the field of Missiology are required to pass
both the entrance examination and an interview conducted by the Seminary on 17th&
18thJanuary2019. The examination will be conducted in UBS and the candidate should take the
exam at their own expense. Keep in mind that the Written Test will be on 17thJanuary2018 and
the Interview on 18th January 2018 (meeting with the Missiology Department and the Principal
and the Deans).

Entrance Examination
The entrance examination consists of 3 papers:

1) Missiology, 2) English and 3) General Knowledge. The candidates must secure a minimum
of B grade (60%) to pass.

1. Missiology

The exam and interview will concentrate on looking at (1) candidates’ motivation for mission
research, (2) their ability to think critically and (3) their communication ability in English.

In preparing for the exam and the interview, please note the following:

a. Come with your tentative thesis proposal typed up in two pages that should include: Title of
the Research, Statement of Problem, Significance of the Research, Objectives of the Research,
Research Methodology and a list of any previous written research on the topic. Keep in mind
that this is only a tentative proposal to help the interview committee to understand your research
interests. In other words, if you are given admission, your research topic may change.

b. To improve and develop your general, comprehensive and more importantly academic
understanding of mission(s), you are required to read as many mission-related books as possible.
Of them two books for the exam are required to read through: 1) Bosch, David. Transforming
Mission. Markyknoll: Orbis, 1992. (This book is available in many theological libraries and
through the Centre for Contemporary Christianity (CFCC) PO Box 4601, Bangalore 560046,
INDIA); 2) Stephen B. Bevans & Roger P. Schroeder. Constants in Context: A Theology of
Mission for Today. American Society of Missiology Series, 2004.

2. English

The test is designed to look at candidates’ grasp of English language, with an emphasis on
evaluating their ability to use English as medium for academic writing, to express thoughts by
formulating clear sentences and to show proficiency in arguing a particular point of view.
Suggested reading for English:B.D. Graver, Advanced English Practice, Oxford University
Press.

3. General Knowledge

It is designed to test candidates’ general awareness of current political, social, economic,


religious and cultural issues faced by national and international community.
