Learning a foreign language has become almost an obligation in the modern

world. The globalization in the XXI century established a strong connection among
cultures and peoples. The possibility of going to any places in the world and speaking
with any person in any country has risen a strong desire of learning a foreign language.
Although the possibility of meeting new people and culture, knowing a second language
has become essential in countries with strong international commerce relationship.

Many studies already demonstrated that learning another language is really

important to the brain development and memory improvement, no matter how old you
are. Moreover, people who knows more than one language, have better opportunities in
jobs, more chances in getting a high paying job or just a raise in the salary. Many
industries nowadays require a second language in order to hire a candidate.

However, I believe that the process of learning anything, especially a new

language, should be natural and not obligated, as the development of the skills to speak a
language that is different of your mother one, is not an easy procedure and require a strict
dedication. So, learning a foreign language is up to you. If you believe that this an
important skill and that it will help you in your career or personal life, go ahead.

2. CHOOSE A FAMOUS PERSON YOU KNOW A LOT ABOUT. MAKE NOTES

AND LIST KEY EVENTS FROM THIS PERSON’S LIFE IN CHRONOLOGICAL
ORDER. THEN USE YOUR NOTES TO WRITE A BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE.

Caetano Veloso is a well-known Brazilian singer and composer who was born
in 1942 in Bahia, Brazil. He's one of the most influent artists in Brazil and his songs are
known all over the world. He moved to Rio de Janeiro with his family when he was 14
years old. When he completed 18 years old, his family returned to Salvador. In 1960
Caetano receives a guitar as a gift and starts to sing in bars with his sister. In the same
year Caetano attended the Philosophy University in Salvador.
In 1964 Caetano starts participating in many important concerts with important
MPB singers. Three years later he launched his first album called Domingo. After this he
released many other works with great relevance to the music scenario that year. In 1969
he was arrested by the "military regime". One year later he was exilated exiled to Europe
(Lisbon, Paris and then London), where he recorder two new albuns and the song "Maria
Bethânia", one of my favorites. Caetano returns to Brazil in 1972 and compose many
other songs together with Bethânia e Chico Buarque. Caetano already won many awards
like Grammy, Grammy Latino and others.

Mr. Langdon Flowers, Director
Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT
77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139

Dear Mr. Flowers:

I got really interested in the interchange program. I would like to spend at least one year
studying biology and pharmacology on the institute. I heard good things about MIT, the
structure, teachers, methods of teaching and all the possibilities of expressing my
knowledge and ideas.

I know that it's not easy to get in a program well-known like this one, however I believe
in my capabilities.Nevertheless, got a little confused about the prices. The website was
not very clear about the values and the payment methods. Is there a possibility of
receiving a scholarship?

I'm looking forward to receive you answer. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Joed Júnior
