Statement on Organizational Ethics

Ethics are a set of duties and standards that guide human behavior within an organization;

our own personal views on what is correct and incorrect in any given situation. The way we

respond or react to that situation will depend on how ethical we are. Ethics are the morals and

values that prevent us from acting in bad faith and direct us to act in all honesty and integrity

(Johnson, 2016).

Organizational Ethics make reference to the morals and values that make and improve an

organization, and how the individuals within an organization operate. It focuses on shaping the

ethical guidelines and how the industry is developed through universal values that human beings

possess. They are best demonstrated through acts of fairness, compassion, integrity, honor,

discretion and responsibility (Johnson, 2016).

The Ethical Theory of Altruism is one by which I feel more connection to. It offers

perspective on how people are moved into action rather than focusing on oneself. It advocates

helping others without trying to get compensated in any way (Johnson, 2016).

My style of ethics has been developing since I was young. I was brought up in a

Christian home, always looking out for others. I was taught to respect others and their personal

views. In High School I was nominated by several students as a peer counselor; this gave me an

opportunity to join a peer assistance program and work closely with peers (Johnson, 2016).

My personal ethics are to respect others’ beliefs and earn others’ respect. I have strong

ethical views, but I am also an open-minded person, which allows me to be able to consider the

ethical views of others and respect them. If there is no contradiction within the organization’s

ethical views, then they should not affect me, personally (Johnson, 2016).

As a leader, my ethical views would probably be consistent with those of others. In any

case that they may differ, I am open to discussing my views and to observing things from a

different perspective, as long as it is done in an ethical perspective. As a follower, I will follow

those with the same ethical perspective as mine, but I will also work with those whose

perspective is different, respecting each and everyone’s views (Johnson, 2016).

As a leader in an organization, I would help develop organizational ethics within the

organization by creating a pleasant working environment that is capable of fostering employees’

values of teamwork, positivism and fellowship. I consider this fundamental for the proper

functioning and growth of an organization. With this in mind, employees would feel valued and

show up to work, happily. Happiness and work satisfaction increases productivity in the

workplace; therefore enabling the employees to be worry-free and more concentrated in their

work. This would maintain a good working environment, while becoming a good motivator for

others (McKee, 2014).

In summary, our ethical views may differ from one another in any given circumstance,

but if we learn to work together for the good of the organization we are working for, then ethical

values within the company will flourish (Johnson, 2016). A favorable work environment is the

key to a successful organization, and success is the goal of the leaders. When the leaders

motivate employees, and the employees feel good about the company, satisfaction sets in, greater

productivity arises, and good performance turns into efficient and creative work (McKee, 2014).
