The Friendship

The Friendship by Mildreda D.Taylor is a story about a black and white people between

which there was friendship but at one moment it stopt.. It was in Mississippi in 1973. Cassie

Logan, who is black, and her brothers have been warned to go to the Wallace store, and be

normal, but everything did not want like what she want because the people in the store were

white and they do not like them. What is the relationship between white and black people? The

white people saw themselves as better and superior to black people. In the past black people felt

distrustful of the whites because of that.

The relationship between white people and black people in The Friendship was made

more difficult because the whites show that they felt superior and John raise the shotgun on

Tom Bee because when he goes to the store he say “John give me tobacco”. The white man

think that the black people can’t talk in such tone,. For example, Cassie notices “We watched

Mr.John Wallace to see if he would raise the shotgun again. We all waited for the second click

of the shotgun. But only the cries of Tom Bee as he inched his way along the road ripped the

silence” (53). Relationships are not helped when, people pointed guns each other.
“Let me tell you something John you was John to me when I saved your sorry life and

you give me your word you will always gonna be John to me long as lived” (51). My

thoughts about this situation that the white people think that if you want to talk with white

people you need to address to him proper. Like a Mister not just name. If you will be nice with

the person which you talk, he will be nice with you too. In the story says that the Tom Bee help

to John and he say you call me just John. And Tom Bee think that he he call him John all his

life, but not John decide that he can’t call him John because he grew up.

May be someone can disagree with me and say “that all people is equal to each other ”

because all people have the same rights to do something and choose that they want. Thomas

Jefferson says ”We hold these truths to be felt-evident, that all men are created equal… ” ( The

Declaration of Independence). He says that because he believed that is truth. However, Thomas

Jefferson owned slaves, and this means he did not treat everyone equally. Additionally,

America did not pass the Civil Rights Act until 1964, and the Declaration of Independence was

written in 1776. From 1776 to 1964 the people do not treat each other the same.

The white people saw themselves as better and superior to black people. In the past black

people felt distrustful of the whites because of that. I believe in my claim that is true because in

the past black people did not have the right to vote, but white had the right to vote. So it was in

the past and now my believe is that all men are created equal.
