TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Technology integration is more than just getting tools

into the classroom. In an integrated classroom,

students practice technology skills at the same time as

they practice other academic skills. When choosing

which tech tools to use, our choices should be “driven

by the curriculum, rather than the curriculum

driven by tools” (MacNevin, 2015).

When you're first learning about integrating technology

into your classroom, some terms may be unfamiliar.

Here are a few terms to assist you as you begin to

introduce technology into your classroom.

IP address (Internet Protocol address)
The standard way of identifying a computer that is connected to
the Internet, much the way a telephone number identifies a
telephone on a telephone network.

Local Area Network (LAN)


A connection of computers and/or peripherals (e.g., printers)
confined to a limited area (e.g., a room, building, or campus) that
allows multiple users to communicate and share information and
hardware.

Firewall
According to Webopedia, a firewall is “part of a computer system or
network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting
outward communication” (Beale, 2018). As a protective barrier,
firewalls guard computer devices and networks against harmful
attacks.

Malware (Malicious Software)
Malware refers to any software or file designed to damage or
disrupt a computer system. It can be in the form of a virus, worm,
or a Trojan horse.

Plug-ins
“A software component that adds a specific feature or service to a
larger system. For example, in order to view a PDF file, the Adobe
Acrobat Reader® plug-in is required” (Techopedia, 2018).

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)


“A document that you and your students sign to acknowledge
understanding of the rules and expectations for using the
computers, network, and Internet access provided by the school
or district” (Techopedia, 2018).

Browser
A software application that allows you to visit webpages and use
web applications. i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and
Google Chrome.

Web Application
Web application (Web app) “is software program that runs in an
Internet browser, on or through the a webpage” in order to
perform tasks online (Emberton, 2018). i.e. Gmail, Facebook,
Twitter, Pinterest

Platform
The hardware and operating system that a program, application,
or process runs on (Emberton, 2018). Two most common
platforms are Mac and Windows. Tablet devices are another
common platform

Cloud Storage
“The cloud” is a virtual, not physical location, that operates as an on-
demand storage space for data. Cloud services such as Dropbox, backup
and store your files online, where they can be assessed from anywhere,
from any device that you log into.

Embed
To insert content, such as graphics, files or videos into a computer
document. For example, you can embed a video directly onto your blog
or email. By using an embed code (< >) you can use to make that content
appear directly on your website instead of as a link.

Caching
is a short-term memory or storage of internet files, such as web pages,
graphics, and links. Your Internet browser uses the information to
download websites faster on repeat visits. It is a digital footprint of all
locations visited by each user.

Video blogs, or vlogs, are short videos that use art, technology and
pop culture to engage its audience. Vlogs. represent a way for
educators to bring class content to life.

Digital Storytelling
A student-centered collaborate tool that combines traditional
storytelling with digital technology. This web-based tool blends
video, audio, images, and text to create and tell stories.

Digital Citizenship
refers to appropriate and responsible use of technology. These
include awareness digital safety, leaving a positive digital
footprint, and the prevention of cyberbullying,

Gamification
Learning platforms that help students learn information and master
skills as they engage in game-based challenges. Gamification uses
games mechanics such as points, levels and badges to motivate learners.
Instructors are able to use the programs to create personalized lessons,
to meet the needs of each individual student.

Synchronous Learning Tools


Learning tools that allow real-time communication, instruction, and
collaboration, between teachers and students (Techopedia, 2018).
Examples include: Google Hangout, Messenger, Interactive Webinars,
Videoconferencing .

Asynchronous Learning Tools


Unlike Synchronous Tools, this approach does not require students and
teachers to be in the same location, at the same time. Teachers can
deliver tests, assignments, and lectures to students through email,
blogs, and discussion boards.
