Architecture

Temple

Beautiful Appearance and Unique Monomer Shape: The

ancient Chinese architecture is beautiful and graceful in
appearance with distinctive features. Buildings are usually
built in square, round, hexagon and octagon.
Rich artistic decorations: Decorations such as paintings,
colours, and sculptures is particularly important in ancient
Chinese architecture. Painting on architecture is a
distinctive characteristic of formal buildings such as the
palace and temple, while it is forbidden in civilian houses.
"Sky well" (天井): the concept of an "open space"
surrounded by buildings, a relatively enclosed courtyard
formed from the intersections of closely spaced buildings
and offer a small opening to the sky through the roof
space from the floor up.

5
House

-The house in Kampung Pulai are arranged in a linear

pattern similar to the traditional Iban “Long House” as
each of the houses is connected to each other along the
way
Since it was built by the people who settled down to make
a home, it is built by using the simple material such as
timber for the structure and zinc or aluminium for the roof
of the house, thus creating a unique kind of style and a
unique character to it
Some of the houses were built with concrete mainly due to
modernisation and timber is not a good long-term
material to be used for a house so parts of the houses are
built with concrete to sustain weather conditions

Habits

During normal days the residents are mostly

working and studying.
Some people who have retired just spent
their day talking to other residents
Usually, in the morning the residents would
visit the temple and do a short prayer. After
finishing their prayer, they gathered
together in the temple or the stall around the
place
Most of the residents say that the coffee stall
is the place they visit most often

Before entering Kampung Pulai, there is a Chinese style
gateway in at the entrance of Kampung Pulai. The more than
3 metres height structure manage to give us a nostalgic and
welcoming feel for those who are visiting Kampung Pulai.

2
When we stand in the middle of the plaza facing South East,
we can see the historically significant temple, Swee Nyet
Temple. The temple is on a same axis as the Princess Cave and
it face the cave directly across the river. It conveys a sense of
blessing from the deity to and fro their daily living and their
working life.
15
3
Looking towards the North West from community hall, we can
see Princess Cave located across the river. It feels like a
guardian, looking after Kampung Pulai from far.

4
Both sides of the alley had been covered up with overgrown
weed due to lack of maintenance. This had created an
unknown dangers (eg : snakes) for the villagers who uses the
path. The more than 1m height overgrown weed had provided
a unwanted screening of the view toward the Swee Nyet
Temple and the Princess Cave.

Quite a number of the villagers of Kampung Pulai work as a
rubber tapper and we were able to see the rubber tree
plantation. The rubber plantation had blocked the views
beyond it.

Viewing towards South East, we are able to have an
unobstructed view of Kampung Pulai sitting on an open
plains with mountainous terrain on the background.

Kampung Pulai experiences light to gentle wind most of

the time. You can feel the wind on your face and the
small twigs on the trees moves. Kampung Pulai rarely
experiences wind speed that is more than 19km/h. With
the existing of wind, it carried away the hot air and
make the place cooler.

Vegetation
A A
Kampung Pulai was once a jungle full of
greeneries. Although in the present days,
some parts of the village are developed
and reduce the number of green plants,
but the greeneries that are spread from B
the river to the Princess Hill are still
maintained.

Legend:

A      Rubber Plantation
B      Bamboo
C      Bodhi Tree

21
A. Rubber Plantation
Due to the dimishing number of gold in the past, the villagers
started to switch their main sources from gold mining to selling
crops. Therefore, that culture still remains until now where most
of the villagers get their income from the crops that they have
harvested near the Princess Hill. The location of the rubber tree is
a bit far from the plaza because of the strong smell that is
produced by the rubber tree.

B. Bamboo
Bamboo is located beside the bridge and in front of the shop near
the pavilion. It is usually used for a hand craft or souvenir that the
villagers sell in kampong pulai. There are some wooden chairs at
the bamboo area near the bridge for the visitors to take a rest and
enjoy the view to the plaza, since its shaded because covered by
the bamboo itself.

C. Bodhi Tree
We can see from the entrance there is a 7m high tree near a
pavilion. They planted a Bodhi tree there because it has a same
name as the pavilion which is 菩提閣. According to the villagers, it
has a good luck for the kampung pulai where in the past Buddha
was meditated and got an enlightment in this tree.
