COMPARISON MODEL A WITH PORTAL METHOD FOR WIND

Comparison has been made through the results obtained between SAP 2000
software with the results obtained from ‘Portal Method’ using Model A for two wind
direction that is X and Y direction.

1. COMPARISON MODEL A WITH PORTAL METHOD FOR WIND-X DIRECTION.

Comparison the results (Portal Method and SAP 2000) of shear force and moment
at :-
a. The mid height column Table
b. The mid span beam Table
c. The moment at top column and bottom Table
d. The moment at both end of beam Table

For wind-x direction, tables were prepared at the highest frame that is at gridline 2
and 3. Since the building is symmetrical, the result from Portal 2 is same as Portal 3
for wind-x direction.
a. The Mid Height Column
The tables show all the values of comparison for each column at all level Gridline A
to Gridline G for portal frame 2&3. The percentage of changes was made in order to
observe the difference. From general view, due to the building is symmetrical the
Shear Force result obtain at mid column at Ground Level to Level 12, is same for
Gridline A and Gridline G, Gridline B and Gridline F, Gridline C and Gridline E and
Gridline D for Portal Method and SAP 2000 respectively.
The results of Shear Force obtained using SAP 2000 is 29% - 47% less than Shear
Force calculated using Portal Method. The lowest Shear Force obtained from SAP
2000 is 0.115kN at level 12 Gridline A and Gridline G meanwhile the lowest Shear
Force obtained from Portal Method is 0.798kN at level 12 Gridline A and Gridline G.
The different in percentage is 594% decrease. The highest Shear Force obtained
from SAP 2000 is 24.530kN at level 1 Gridline D and the highest Shear Force for
Portal Method is 32.60kN at level 1 Gridline A and Gridline G, different in
percentage is kN

b. The Mid Span Beam

The tables show all the values of comparison for each mid girder at all level for
Gridline A-B, Gridline B-C Gridline C-D Gridline D-E, Gridline E-F and Gridline F-G
at portal frame 2 & 3. The percentage of changes was made in order to observe the
difference. From general view, the Shear Force result obtains at mid girder at Level
1 to Roof Level, are symmetrical at all mid girder means that Gridline A-B, Gridline
B-C Gridline C-D are symmetric with Gridline D-E, Gridline E-F and Gridline F-G by
using Portal Method. However the results Shear Force obtain by using SAP 2000 is
only same at Gridline C-D and Gridline D-E, and different of Shear Force value was
at Gridline A-B, Gridline B-C, Gridline E-F and Gridline F-G

The results of Shear Force obtained by using SAP 2000 is some are slightly
reduced and slightly increased than Shear Force that have been calculated by using
Portal Method and the percentage is at 13% - 182%.The lowest Shear Force
obtained from SAP 2000 is 0.165kN at roof level Gridline A-B, meanwhile the lowest
Shear Force obtained from Portal Method is 0.465kN at all mid girder of roof level.
The percentage different between portal method is 182%. The highest Shear Force
obtained from SAP 2000 is 20.864kN at level 1 Gridline C-D and Gridline D-E, the
highest Shear Force for Portal Method is 22.45kN at all level 1 mid girder and the
percentage different between portal method is %

c. The Moment At Both End Beam (Girder Intersection)

The tables show all the values of comparison for each beam intersection
respectively to the girder moment at all level Gridline 1, Gridline 2, Gridline 3 and
Gridline 4, at the highest portal frame Gridline 2&3. The percentage of changes was
made in order to observe the difference. From general of view, the Moment result
obtains is symmetrical which at all girder intersection Gridline A & Gridline B,
Gridline B & Gridline C, Gridline C & Gridline D, Gridline D & Gridline E, Gridline E &
Gridline F and Gridline F & Gridline G using Portal Method. It was same pattern
when using SAP 2000 only different in Moment Value.

The results of Moment obtained using SAP 2000 is 28% - 60% less than Moment
calculated using Portal Method. The lowest Moment obtained from SAP 2000 is
0.385kN.m at roof level Gridline A - Gridline B meanwhile the lowest Moment
obtained from Portal Method is 0.931kN.m at level 12 Gridline C-D and Gridline D-E.
The highest Moment obtained from SAP 2000 is 41.127kN.m at level 1 Gridline C-
Gridline D while the highest Moment is 67.35kN.m at Level 1 Gridline A-Gridline B
and Gridline F-Gridline G obtained from Portal Method.

d. The Moment at Top And Bottom Column

The tables show all the values of comparison for top and bottom moment at
intersection Gridline A, Gridline B, Gridline C and Gridline D, Gridline E , Gridline F
and Gridline G at portal frame Gridline 2 & 3 at all level. The percentage of changes
was made in order to observe the difference. From general view, the Moment result
obtains is symmetrical which the Moment value at Gridline A is same as Gridline G
and Gridline B same as Gridline F Gridline C is same as Gridline E and Gridline D
using Portal Method. It was same pattern when using SAP 2000 only different in
Moment Value.

The results of Moment obtained using SAP 2000 is 17% - 73% more than Moment
calculated using Portal Method. The lowest Moment obtained from SAP 2000 is
0.7kN.m (above) at level 11 Gridline A. Meanwhile the lowest Moment obtained from
Portal Method is 1.397kN.m (above) at level 11 Gridline A and Gridline G. The
highest Moment obtained from SAP 2000 is 85.855kN.m at level 1 Gridline A.
Meanwhile 58.67kN.m at all level 1 Gridline A and Gridline F is obtained from Portal
Method
