SEEKING A WONDErLAND ArCHITECT
The snowmen, women, and children of Snowflake
Valley are getting ready to host their annual Winter
Wonderland Festival. This year, they want to
redesign the layout of their festival, so they are
hiring a Wonderland Architect.

To apply for this magical job, you must complete

the steps in this guide. These steps will help you
create a festival layout to share with the snow
people of Snowflake Valley. If you follow the steps
in this guide carefully, you may be hired as their
new Wonderland Architect!

May your design be festive and wonderful!

STEP 1: SKETCHING A WINTEr WONDErLAND
The first step toward becoming a Wonderland Architect is
to create a map of the Winter Wonderland Festival.

The people of Snowflake Valley want you to brainstorm all

the ideas for decorations, and attractions for the festival.
They want everything to be arranged in arrays, and equal
groups. These snowpeople love their rows and columns!

The checklist on the next page shows all the arrays and
equal groups you must include in your design. Use the
checklist to guide you as you design the perfect Winter
Wonderland.

It is okay to add more than what’s on to this list, but these

eight arrays are required.

2 arrays that model the Commutative Property of Multiplication B&C

1 attraction that models the Associative Property of Multiplication D

1 array that models the Identity Property of Multiplication E

STEP 2: ADD YOUr lABELS
Now that you’ve draw each attraction, it is time to
label your map. Pick up a strip of labels from your
project supply center, and cut them out.

Place each label next to the attraction it matches.

Use the Winter Wonderland Checklist to help you match

each label to the correct attraction.

You may want to hold off on gluing the labels to the

map until step 4.

STEP 3: WINTEr WONDErLAND SCAVENGEr HUNT
It’s time to have a partner check your map sketch. This
will help you double-check that all the required
attractions are shown on your map.

Find a partner, and have them complete the Wonderland

Scavenger Hunt list.

•  If your partner finds all the items on the scavenger

hunt list, move on to step 4.

•  If your partner does not find all the items on the

scavenger hunt list, add the items you forgot, then
have a partner check your map again.

STEP 4: COLOrING A WINTEr WONDErLAND
Now that your map is designed, it’s time to glue
down your labels, and color.

Take your time to color your map using your

neatest coloring skills.

As you color each part of your map, make sure you

pick colors that help your attractions stand out.

Also keep in mind, the snow people of Snowflake

Valley are looking for a design that is festive, and
makes people feel the magic of the winter season.
Choose your colors wisely.

STEP 5: WrITE YOUr FESTIVAL DIrEcTOrY
The snowpeople of Snowflake
Valley have also requested that
you create a Festival Directory.

This directory will show all the

mathematical thinking behind
each of the equal groups and
arrays you’ve designed. Every
architect must be a great
mathematician, after all.

The diagrams on the next few

pages will help you design the
perfect Festival Directory.

STEP 8: ArE YOU AN IDEAL ArCHITECT?
It’s time for you to review what you’ve created.
As part of your application, the snowpeople of
Snowflake Valley have asked you to rate your
own design using the Winter Wonderland rubric.

To rate your design, read the rubric carefully,

and highlight the score you think you deserve in
each category.

It is important to be honest with yourself as

you rate the quality of your work. It is also
important not to be too hard on yourself. Make
sure you are fair with the ratings you select.

Remember to neatly highlight your scores in

each category.

your project

2.  Make sure your map is securely

glued.

3.  Make sure your Festival Directory is

tucked in the pocket.

4.  Paper clip your rubric to your map.

5.  Place your finished project in the

turn in basket.

6.  Clean up your work space so it looks

neater than when you started.
