Sight Word Fluency
1.FL.F.5 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to
support comprehension.
Sight word cards, highlighters, pencils, notebook paper
During the last workshop, we learned about sight words and how
they make reading more fluent.
Let’s take a look at different sight words. Each of the cards has a
different sight word. The students should read the card three
times and highlight the sight word that is being focused on every
time it is seen in the reading. The teacher will demonstrate this
activity on the smart board for the students to see.
Now the students will try it with a partner. The teacher will split
the class into partners and each group will get a different sight
word to focus on. The students should take turns reading the card
two times each and highlight the sight word found in the reading.
Independent Practice
Remind students how the
teaching point can be used in
independent writing. (There
should be a link between the
mini lesson and the students’
independent writing lives).
Group Wrap Up
Restate the teaching point. Ask:
Did you try what was taught?
Did it work for you? How will it
affect your future writing?
The teacher will remind the students that sight words are very
important in writing. Each student will be given a different sight
word to focus on and they should create a journal that has the use
of the sight word in every sentence. After the journal is written
the students should re-read their journals highlighting the sight
word every time it appears in the writing.
The teacher will wrap up this Minilesson by asking the following
questions:
 Are sight words helpful in writing?
 How will the use sight words affect your writing?
 Does anyone want to share an example of how they used
their sight word?
