Handa’s Surprise Reflection

The students were previously introduced to fruits, and in Handa’s Surprise they are

remembering those fruits and also learning new fruits. When I started the lesson and asked them

what fruits they remember I tapped into the students’ prior understanding, they started

remembering our fruits and that lead me to smoothly transition into introducing our topic for the

day and story. When I used the remembering strategy of introduction it engaged the students

because they knew what was featured in the story, but not the plot. When I saw a student, Shahad,

was distracted I changed the character, Akiyo’s name to Shahad. Also it being too difficult for the

students to remember, using the name Shahad instead interested all the students. I asked them

questions with the cover and almost every page to keep them participating and engaged.
I think that the reason they were engaged and participative is because the story tapped into their

prior knowledge whilst also being simple and interesting enough for them to follow along, I even

had them guess what fruit the next animal would take and used real fruits to give examples.

Hamdan, an SEN student, tried distracting Saif, another SEN student, in the beginning but as soon

as I complimented Saif for sitting nicely Hamdan then sat nicely and waited for me to compliment

him and I did. I also saw him sitting nicely later on and asked him to help me and my MCT liked

that, she told me that my strategies improved compared to my previous observed lesson.

I believe that my lesson met my teaching goals, which was classroom management. I feel that I

managed the lesson quite efficiently, and according to my MST and MCT I have improved a lot

more compared to previous teachings, they were both happy with the way I taught. I knew the

students understood their LO’s when I was asking them questions and using the checklist to follow

along with their understanding and areas of focus.
