Reader Summary

Reader: Jason J.
Grade: Third; Mr. Oberdoerster
Tutor: Simone Guio
Date: 14 September 2018

Quantitative Summary:

For their first meeting, the tutor gave Jason different reading assessments to determine the
reader’s text level at independent, instructional, and frustration. The tutor gave him four
assessments in total. The first assessment was at level 22 and the reader scored a 95% accuracy
rate, an instructional text. In the reading there were 11 errors, 1 self-correction, a 1:12 self-
correction rate, and 83 WCPM. The second assessment was at level 20 with an accuracy rate of
98%, an independent text. There were 3 errors, 0 self-corrections, a self-correction rate of 1:0,
and 81 WCPM. The third assessment was at level 21 with 96% accuracy rate, another
independent text. There were 9 errors, 3 self-corrections, a 1:4 self-correction rate, and 95
WCPM. The fourth assessment was at level 23 with 99% accuracy rate, a frustration text. There
was one error, 1 self-correction, a self-correction rate of 1:2 and 87 WCPM.

Qualitative Summary:

Jason would often disrupt the meaning of the passage by not following the punctuation of certain
sentences. He would often do this when he was unsure of some words and would read through
them quickly, forgetting about the punctuation. Jason repeating words and phrases once or twice
when he was unsure of the pronunciation. He would self-correct himself in the end some of the
time but would also omit the phrase or word when unsure. He would take pauses that weren’t too
long until he self-corrected. At his frustration level, he took longer pauses towards the end of the
text and the tutor decided to stop after two minutes. Jason would also insert other words when he
was having trouble understanding the text and information. In observation, the assessments that
were at independent level included pictures while assessments that only included text contained
words only. The level of fluency for Jason is a 2 out of 4 on the Pinnell and Fountas scale for
assessing fluency. His rate for reading is low with many stops and slow-downs to understand the
text. Jason also showed little evidence for intonation where his pitch stayed the same and had
little to no expression.

Jason showed high rates in retelling and comprehension in the most of the assessment texts. At
his frustration level, he couldn’t answer all the questions since he didn’t finish the rest of the
texts but accurately answered the other ones. At the instructional level, he would be able to retell
the story quite accurately but only missing one or two answers from the comprehension
questions. At the independent level, Jason comprehended the text completely and was correct on
all the comprehension questions.

Reader Summary:

Jason is a very motivated reader when it comes to texts that include pictures and when the
subject is about animals. According to the comprehension questions, Jason showed a high level
of prior knowledge to the information that he read. However, Jason is showed some signs of
struggle with vocabulary knowledge and pronunciation. Jason was well behaved during our
session and has expressed a large passion for reading.

Goal/s for the reader:

For the upcoming sessions, work in intonation and the correlation with punctuation will be
explored. This will include work to discover how punctuation affects a text and using it to show
expression when reading aloud. Jason will also practice vocabulary and pronunciation of
complex words through different activities of reading and educational games.
