INTRODUCTION

What do successful school principles do in order to increase students’ academic
achievement and graduation rates? And where is technology involved and or not
involved? Also what are principal’s perceptions of the importance of technology?

Purpose of the research:

To examine principals by their years of experience and how their gender plays a
part in their decision making and their stance on technology.

METHODOLOGY

What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants:
 They had 311 principals from a large metropolitan area in the
southwest region of the U.S. respond to a questionnaire.
 Male and female
 126 males
 185 females

Procedures:
 They asked these principals a cognitive interview questionnaire that
asked their perceptions regarding the importance of technology for
their schools.
 These were asked by graduate students who were trained on how to
administer the instrument and required to interview a specific
 number of current public school principals.
Data Collection Methods/Data Source:
 Questionnaire
 Interviews
 Studies
Data Analysis:
 Coded into categories
 Coded 10% sample of resources to determine the consistency of the
coding.
 Reliability results revealed a high level of agreement

RESULTS

 35% of principals indicated that technology was used as a primary
communication tool.
 28% of principals responded that technology was integrated in teacher’s
classroom instruction.
 14% used technology for data sharing and management.
 15% used technology as a resource to find information.
 10% was used for student learning.

DISCUSSIONS

Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):

As society increases as a technology-rich environment, school leaders are faced with how to
support the integration of technology into meaningful learning activities and how to evaluate
the use of technology within their schools. Technology still needs to be understood and how it
can be improved in the classrooms. Strategies still need to be developed for better uses.

REFLECTIONS

Student’s Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your

school/work):
Technology is still being misunderstood or misused. Different uses are being found by those of
different sex, difference in years of experience that influences the leadership that is displayed by
principals. Further research is indeed needed to address other issues of the influence of technology.
