Reader Summary

Reader: Keyonte
Grade: 3-O
Tutor: Ashley Edminster
Date: 9/14/18 & 9/19/18

Quantitative Summary:
In the first meeting, the tutor distributed reading assessments to determine the reader’s text level
at three stages, independent, instructional, and frustration. The first text given was at a level 21.
The reader scored 99% accuracy, an independent text. In the reading, there was 1 error and 2
self-corrections for a 1:1.5 self-correction rate and 54 WCPM. However, this was his frustration
level based on his retell.

The second reading was with a level 18 text. The reader scored 99% accuracy, again an
independent level text. In the reading there was 1 error, 3 self-corrections, a self-correction rate
of 1:2, and 68 WCPM. However, this was his instructional level based on his retell.

The third reading was a level 16 text. The reader scored 100% accuracy, an independent level
text. There were 0 errors in the reading and 1 self-correction, a 1:1 self-correction rate, and 82
WCPM.

Qualitative Summary:
At the instructional level, Keyonte had only one miscue in which he omitted the word vacation.
The omission did not affect the meaning of the passage. He did have three self-corrections where
he initially substituted or omitted the word and then went back and re-read it correctly. He was
monitoring his own reading and realized these initial miscues independently before correcting
them.
The level of fluency for Keyonte is a 2 out of 4 on the Pinnell and Fountas Scale for Assessing
Fluency. Keyonte takes long pauses and often tells stories during his reading. His phrasing is
often unnatural, and his intonation and stress do not change during most of the text. He does not
pause for natural breaks and in most cases ignores punctuation.
When asked to retell the text, Keyonte struggles to retain information as his attention is placed
on accurately reading the words, rather than reading for comprehension. At level 18, Keyonte is
able to make connections to the text and is able to retell the main ideas of the text. His level of
retell brings most independent texts down to a frustration level. However, at level 18 and below
he is able to retell with great accuracy and these texts become instructional or independent.

Reader Summary:
Overall, Keyonte was motivated to read each text before the assessments began. While he was
reading, he remained motivated and wanted to read as many books as time would allow. He
demonstrates use of prior knowledge of reading strategies when decoding words. Keyonte
seemed to have adequate vocabulary knowledge during almost every text we read. He was able
to make connections for other texts and experiences based on the vocabulary in a text.

Goal/s for the reader:

Goals for Keyonte are to work on his fluency. I want to give him strategies to use to help him
read fluently. I also want to help him build his comprehension skills. I hope to help him build
these skills and work on his confidence along the way.
