Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Kahoot!

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs
of plants and animals. a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and flower.
Technology Standard Addressed: Level 3, Infusion: Instruction at least begins to shift from teacher to
student directed. At least there are hands-on activities with student exploration and discovery, but learning
may still be rather controlled by the teacher and have predictable outcomes.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students are able to access the Kahoot as many times as needed if the teacher puts the link on their
classroom website. This way, students can study it and practice at home, or catch up if they were absent from
school. If students do not have a phone to use, they will be given a classroom tablet. If there are not enough
classroom tablets, students can use laptops or computers to access the Kahoot. If a student has a visual
disability and is unable to see the screen clearly, they can work with a buddy or the teacher, so that questions
and answers can be read out loud. The teacher can give more time on the Kahoot questions if needed so that
the student has enough time to verbally answer.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur prior to the SRT activity and how you will introduce the
SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, students will go on a nature walk outside with their teacher. Along the nature walk,
the teacher will point out plants and teach about the parts of the plant. The teacher will find a flower or weed
to pick from the ground. The teacher will point to each part of the picked plant and give an explanation as to
what that part does. Throughout the nature walk, the teacher will point out plants and ask questions like,
“Which part of that plant is the stem?” After the nature walk, the class will go back inside and have a brief
group discussion of what we learned. Then, the Kahoot will start.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☒ Other (please explain): review of
what we learned on the nature walk.

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:
During the SRT activity, students will be given one tablet each from the classroom set, so that they can
participate in the Kahoot AFTER they have received instructions. Explain to the class that we will be using
Kahoot! Explain that Kahoot is an online quizzing site that shows your answers in real time and you get to race
against your classmates to be in first place. After explaining the instructions, pass out the tablets and help
students log in. Once everyone is logged in, put the Kahoot up on the board and begin. The activity will last
about 10 minutes. The teacher will read each question and answer choice out loud whenever a question is on
the screen. This way, every student has a fair chance in case they can’t see the screen, they can still hear the
teacher ask the question.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. What part of the plant is this image showing?
2. What part of the plant is this image showing?
3. What part of the plant is the image showing?
4. What do plants need to live?
5. What else do plants need to live?
6. What else do plants need to live?
7. What Part of the Plant Transports Food?
8. What part of the plant stores food?
9. What part of the plant turns food into energy?
10. Which of these would help a plant grow?

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will show the correct answer, so that student have a chance to correct themselves and they will know the
correct answer if they got it wrong.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, we will review each question as a class to make sure that everyone understands the
information. I will collect all of the tablets, making sure that I get them all back. I would then ask the class
how they feel about Kahoot and if they would like to use it again for other assignments.
How will the data be used?
I will use the data from the activity to see who is understanding parts of plants, and who is not. This will also
let me know who was paying close attention on the nature walk. This activity would not be a graded

assignment, it would just be to let me see if my students attained the information that I wanted them to from
the nature walk. If a child did not do well on the Kahoot, that lets me know that I will need to work more with
that student, so that they do not fall behind.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
My personal goal for this activity was to get my students out of the classroom to learn. The Kahoot helps me
to see if that approach works well or not. Many students are cooped up in their desk all day, so I thought it
would be a great idea to get the students outside and moving to stimulate the brain and allow them to take in
information easier. I hope this activity shows that hands-on learning can be more beneficial than taking notes
at a desk.
Reflective Practice:
I feel as if this lesson idea impacts student learning in a positive way. It allows the children to do something
other than learn about a topic out of a textbook, and then take a quiz using paper and pencil. This activity
gets the students moving and then allows them to use fun technology to test themselves. Since this lesson is
more of an introduction to plants, I could extend it with a group project. I would put my students into small
groups and take them back out to the nature walk. Each group would have to find flowers and/or plants to
make a presentation about. Students would take pictures of the plants using one classroom tablet per group.
After all of the pictures are gathered, students would have to make a PowerPoint or Prezi including the
pictures. They would label each part of the plant that they took pictures of, and would research and gather
information about the plant. Groups would have about three 20 minute sessions to complete this assignment.
