Name(s): Cassidy Vorndran and Erin Gawlak Date: 09/17/18
Lesson Title: The Water Cycle Subject: Science
Age or Grade Level: Third grade Number of Students: 28 Length of Lesson: 30 Minutes
Central Focus [Central Focus: This is the main focus of your lesson, it should be a broad
literacy topic, such as Comprehension, Vocabulary, or Researching
Essential Strategy Information]

The main focus of our lesson is the water cycle vocabulary. There are four main
parts to the water cycle and the students will learn each vocabulary term and
definition.

[Essential Strategy: This is the strategy that you plan to teach your
students to use. For the edTPA in Elementary Education, every lesson
should have an essential strategy that you teach the students to do. This
is NOT your teaching strategy--this is the strategy the students will use.
For example, graphic organizers is a teaching tool, not a strategy;
however, planning writing is a strategy that writers use before they begin
writing--planning could be an essential strategy that is taught with a
graphic organizer.]

The essential strategy we will use will be a guided notes sheet during the
PowerPoint presentation. The sheet will include a breakdown of each part of the
water cycle and the Kahoot will strengthen their understanding of the vocabulary
learned in the presentation.
Prior Academic Students need to know different types of weather such as rain, snow, hail, or fog.
Knowledge Students will need to know how to use graphic organizer.

be used to have the students play a game of Kahoot to strengthen their
understanding of the vocabulary. We created a google form exit ticket for each
student to complete on the way out the door to measure the students
understanding of the lesson.

Introduction to Lesson
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Write short descriptions Describe how you will introduce the lesson. What will you do to activate
here prior knowledge and/or to assess background information? Be explicit and
clear.
[Example: 1) 11:00-11:05
Introduction to Key ● Short video that introduces the concept of the water cycle
Vocabulary Words] ● We do not expect students to do all of their learning through the video, it
will act as a way to engage students with visuals and someone other than
the teacher talking
You may use bullets or numbers to make your lessons step-by-step.
Avoid paragraphs.

Instructional Activity
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Write short descriptions Describe how you plan to explicitly teach the skill or strategy of your
here lesson objectives. Write instructional strategies that are detailed enough
that a substitute teacher could walk in and teach from your plan if need be.
Be very specific; instead of “Go over examples of words to describe
winter,” write, “Go over the following words to describe winter, writing
each one on the whiteboard: cold, icy, freezing, white, quiet. ”
2 ) 11:05-11:15
● Start going through the PowerPoint presentation.
(Stating each vocabulary word and definition and show examples of how
each component of the water cycle works)
● Have the students fill out the graphic organizer during the presentation
(This will allow students to understand what they are learning throughout
the presentation)
● Introduce each component of the water cycle
-Evaporation: the sun heats up water from a body of water and turns it into
water vapor which travels into the air
-Condensation: water vapor gets cold and turns into clouds

2
Template designed by Sturm (2018)

-Precipitation: the vapor becomes too heavy for the air to hold, it falls
back to earth as rain, hail, snow, or sleet
-Runoff: the water then flows back into bodies of water such as lakes
rivers, oceans, or streams
-the cycle repeats
● Give students time to ask questions

Extension/Closure Activity
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Write short descriptions What will you have students do in order to practice the skill that you taught
here them in the instructional activity above? Describe in detail how you will
instruct them and exactly what they will be doing during this work time. How
will you assist students who need more support? This activity should have
students showing directly how they have met your learning objectives. You
may describe how you plan to assess.

3)11:15-11:25
● Have each student go to Kahoot.it and enter in the class code
(Students need to log onto the computers and go to the website as they are
doing this the teacher will walk around and monitor the students to make
sure they are using the computers appropriately and logging on to Kahoot
with their own name- first names with last initial are fine. Students are
aloud to use their notes during the game as a guide but are not needed)
● Play one or two rounds of Kahoot depending on how well the students
know the information.
(If students are not grasping the content, we will go back to the PowerPoint
and review the diagram, then play again to see if the results improve)
● Each question has about 10 seconds before the answers are shown so before
the answers show up read the teacher will read the question out loud to the
students.
(This will allow students who need more support to process the question
and be able to comprehend what the question is asking before the answers
show up, instead of having each student sit there and try to read the
question.)
4)11:25-11:30
● Have the students open the google form that we will use as their exit ticket
(After the Kahoot game(s) each student will open the google form and
without notes be able to state each component of the water cycle in order
and give a definition)
● We will walk around the class and monitor the students while they
complete their exit ticket.
(Make sure all students have submitted the form before moving on to the
next lesson)

● Later that day, we will review their responses and determine whether or not
there needs to be another lesson on the topic depending on whether or not
their responses were correct.

EDU 276 Lesson Plan Commentary

Group Member Names: Cassidy Vorndran and Erin Gawlak

EDU 276
Instructor: Bradley Karpie
Due date: 10/01/2018

Central Focus
The central focus of this lesson will be the students understanding the vocabulary that goes
along with the water cycle. There will be guided notes to go along with the PowerPoint which will
keep students on task and help them learn the words and definitions by writing them down. They will
also be able to fill out an exit ticket worksheet about the water cycle to demonstrate their
understanding of the lesson. The content will be on the definitions of the different parts of the water
cycle and the causes of each process. The purpose of this lesson is to strengthen students’ tier three
vocabulary because the words they will be learning are subject related.

Essential Strategy
a. The PowerPoint presentation will help students understand the water cycle
vocabulary through the use of words, pictures, and verbal instruction. These methods
will engage all students, ranging from auditory learners to visual learners.
b. The students will take the information they learned from the introduction video and
PowerPoint and apply it to the Kahoot review game which will strengthen their
knowledge of the content. The Kahoot will ask the students questions in different
forms than just the word and definition, such as, “How many parts are there to the
water cycle,” and “what is the third part of the water cycle?” This will be the students’
third time interacting with the vocabulary, the first two being the video and the slides.
Then they will complete an exit ticket. By the end of the lesson the students will have
seen the vocabulary words four different times in four very different ways which will
enhance their understanding through repetition.

Instructional Methods
A. This lesson includes instructional methods such as direct instruction, modeling
through visuals, and interactive games. The direct instruction will occur during the
PowerPoint presentation. While we are talking, the students will be filling out
notes that are on the slides. This will keep the students on task and engaged in
the lesson versus if we just talked about the information on the slides. The
visuals included in the PowerPoint will help the teachers explain the different
processes to the students so they will more easily grasp the concept of each
process. Letting the students know there will be an interactive game after notes
will keep them more focused during the PowerPoint because they will want to win
the game, and they will need to know the information in order to do so. The game
will also allow to students to have more practice with the words because they will
be seeing them for a second time.
B. The instructional methods used are an introduction video, slides, guided notes,
Kahoot, and an exit ticket. The introduction video will create a platform for the
lesson so the students will have an idea of what we will be talking about that day.
The PowerPoint will be the main material used to relay the information to the
students. Having a PowerPoint accompanied by guided notes will keep students

6

on task because they will need to be writing the information that is coming from
the slides. The guided notes can then be used to assist the students while they
play Kahoot. The notes will also be beneficial when studying for a future quiz or
test. The Kahoot will give the students the opportunity to interact with the words
for a third time since they have already seen them during the video and
PowerPoint. The exit ticket will be the fourth time students see the words and
their definitions, therefore they should be able to complete this task without the
use of their notes. However, the teacher will be walking around while the
students are working on the exit ticket to help them when necessary. Repetition
is a great way for students to learn vocabulary which is why this lesson
incorporates the words and their definitions four separate times, all in different
ways.

Technology Incorporation
Technology is used in every part of the lesson starting with the video which is used to
introduce the topic, and ending with and exit ticket to assess the students knowledge of the
information taught. The students are interacting with technology throughout the whole lesson. They
will watch the video on a projector. After the video, they will use the technology of the PowerPoint to
fill in their notes sheet. Following that they play a very interactive game on the computer. And finally,
their exit ticket will be completed and submitted online through Google Forms. The teacher will utilize
technology when finding a video, creating the PowerPoint and the guided notes sheet, making the
Kahoot game, and created and grading the exit tickets. The technology used will allow the students
to see the words in multiple forms before the end of the lesson. Without technology, the students
would only see the words in a textbook or on a handout. Games without technology only let a few
students participate at a time, whereas Kahoot will allow all students to be engaged and partake in
the game.

Supporting Student Learning

The lesson plan is appropriate for all learners because there are aspects that will be
beneficial for visual, auditory, reading/writing, and tactile learners. Visual learners will learn from the
use of pictures and videos. Auditory learners will do very well with the video and the verbal
instruction from the teacher. Students who need to read or write information to learn will have to
opportunity to read the slides, write the words and definitions on their notes, and write them again in
their own words on the exit ticket. Tactile learners will be engaged during the game of Kahoot
because they can physically interact with the words and what they mean. The students will be able
to focus in on which method is best for them to comprehend the information.

Assessment
The assessment portion of the lesson will be done through the use of an exit ticket. The
students will have had the chance to hear the vocabulary words and definitions three times before
they complete the exit ticket. Since the students can use the notes they took during the PowerPoint
to help them for the Kahoot, they will be told to put the notes away before completing the exit ticket.
This will give the teacher a more accurate representation of how well the students understood the
lesson. The results from the exit ticket will determine if the lesson needs to be retaught in a different
way, or if the students understood the topic and are ready to move on.
