Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Do That Math Problem!

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations.
Represent these problems using
equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using
mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will do the Kahoot! in groups, so if one student for whatever
reason is unable to use the ipad to input their answers they will be able to have help from another student.
Kahoot! Is easy for students to use and is friendly for all students.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the activity begins, I will address the rules of using technology to make sure that all of the students
are careful while using the technology and since the students will be working in groups I will address that
each of the students are sharing the iPad and it will be passed to another student for each question. This
activity will be introduced with a teacher example before the students take control of the iPads so each
student knows how to use the iPads to input answers on Kahoot!

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
The teacher will set up the quiz, put the code to get in on the screen, instruct the students on how to get to
the Kahoot! Website, and click to the next question at the end of each question. The student will work in a
group with peers using the iPad to solve the problems that are put on the screen. At the end of each question,
the students will pass the iPad to the next student in their group to ensure everyone gets an even chance to
answer the questions on the iPad.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Since we are doing math problems, there is only one correct answer to each problem. We will review the
correct answers and how to do the problems at the end of the activity or even at the end of each question.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
At the end of the activity, I will collect the iPads and we will quickly review each of the problems we went
over in the SRT activity.
How will the data be used?
This information will be used to help me as the teacher assess where the class is with this concept. If the class
seems to be doing well with the concept of two-digit subtraction problems I will know that it is time to move
on to multiplication and division. If they need more work, I will assess exactly what the students are struggling
with and come up with a plan to help the students reach their goals.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am creating a quiz for the students to take on Kahoot! I want to see how the students work with the
technology and I want to see what works and what does not work. I hope to gain more knowledge on how I
can continue to use technology in the classroom and innovative ways to use these technology tools.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson is used as an assessment to see where the students are at with the concept of double digit
subtraction. I feel that this will help students know where they are at as well as help me as the teacher know
where my students are at and what I need to do from there. This lesson would be extended by a continuation
of work in the field of double-digit subtraction. Somewhere down the line, I could even let my students use
Kahoot! To create their own quizzes for their classmates! Next time we use Kahoot! In the classroom, I could
allow the students to create the quizzes instead of me.
