Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Kahoot!

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS3G1 Locate major topographical features on a physical map of the United
States.

1. Locate major rivers of the United States of America: Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson,
and St. Lawrence.

Technology Standard Addressed: Standard 2: Technology Integration

2.1 Candidate selects and evaluates digital tools and resources (academic content, technology tools, and
information) for quality, accuracy, and effectiveness, and uses developmentally appropriate resources aligned
with standards to engage learners.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I. Provide Multiple Means of Representation – I could promote understanding across languages

to extend and support the learning experiences for all students. If I have any ELL’s of students
who speak a language other than English, I could have the Kahoot be in their native language.

II. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression – I could vary the methods for response and
navigation. On Kahoot you can ask questions to students in the form of quizzes, jumbles,
discussions, or survey’s. I could vary the Kahoot’s that I make so that I am offering different
ways for students to respond during lessons. I could do this by making each Kahoot different.

III. Provide Multiple Means of Engagement – I could develop self-assessment and reflection by
using Kahoot with my students. When using Kahoot students are immediately able to see
whether or not they answered the question correctly. At the end of each question, students can
see who is in the lead. At the end of the Kahoot game, students can see who the top three
students were because their names are displayed on the podium. This can help students self-
assess and gage their understanding of the material. They can reflect on their understanding by

seeing If they are able to correctly answer the questions.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the SRT activity, the teacher will go over the major topographical features on a physical map of the
United States. The teacher will talk about the Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson, and St.
Lawrence. The teacher will tell the students where the rivers are located and a few facts about each.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT activity, the teacher will display the Kahoot game on the SMARTboard. There will be a game
code that the students will enter on their own devices to join the Kahoot game. Once all students have joined
the game, they will enter their school appropriate nickname. Once all students are ready to begin the game,
the teacher will press start. There will be a total of 6 questions on the major topographical features in the
United States. The students will have 60 seconds to answer each question. The students will answer each
question on their own personal device. After each questions time is us, the top students with the highest
scores nicknames will be displayed with the amount of points they have earned. The activity will last for
approximately 10 minutes. During the SRT activity, the students will answer the questions on their own
personal devices. The teacher will monitor the students and guide the game. The teacher will need a
SMARTboard or way of displaying the Kahoot game. The students will need their own personal devices to
complete the SRT activity.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
(Working sample is provided)
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The Kahoot game requires you to pre-select the answers to the questions.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Student Response and Assessment Tools
After the SRT activity, the teacher and students will discuss the rivers and do a quick debrief. The teacher
will address any questions or misconceptions that the students may have.

How will the data be used?

The data will be used to assess students understanding of topographical knowledge of the major rivers in the
United States. The Kahoot game will not be taken for a grade, it will be used as a formative assessment. The
teacher will collect the data from the Kahoot game on the topographical features of major rivers in the United
States. The data will be used for the teacher to guide instruction for the lesson that will take place the next
day. The teacher will use the data to see what the students are having trouble understanding. The teacher
can use this data for re-teaching strategies. If there are any struggling students in the class, the teacher can
share the Kahoot results with their parents.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal learning goal for this activity is to see if my students understand the topographical features of
the major rivers in the United States. I would use this Kahoot towards the end of the lesson to assess my
students understanding. The Kahoot would show me how effective my teaching is or what I need to change in
my teaching strategies.

Reflective Practice:

I think this lesson would positively impact student learning. Kahoot is a fun, engaging, and educational game.
It creates competitive-ness in students. Kahoot can encourage students to study and focus on the material so
that they can choose the correct multiple choice answer on the game to beat their peers. I would use this
activity at the end of a lesson to assess student knowledge. To enhance this learning experience, I could have
my students create their own Kahoot game with three questions and have students play each other’s games
in small groups.
