My experience working with Erin Clemmer was always positive. As a new
substitute teacher in an inner city school, Erin mentored me on effective teaching and classroom management strategies. She made sure to make time for me to express concerns to her and “vent” frustrations in a safe environment. Although the purpose of any school is to educate the students, Erin also understood the aspect of taking care of new teachers and people in general. She told me once that 50% of new teachers leave within their first year, and she wanted to make sure that I had the support needed to stay in the career I had chosen. Erin helped me with lesson planning, meeting during our common planning periods, collaborating in professional learning communities and grade level meetings, finding resources, observing my instruction, and giving me feedback. I shared with Erin that I felt I had a low teaching efficacy especially with classroom management, planning, and instruction. She provided me with opportunities to observe her teaching and then discuss it. Overall, she was a very genuine mentor who provided me with authentic learning opportunities which facilitated me growing my own teaching abilities and finding a permanent teaching position.
